If they're there they're not harming you in any way, other than cluttering up your skill list. Personally, if a skill removal service was put into the game I'd prefer to get some of those skillpoints back (a percentage at least). Maybe the interface could then present a list of my character's skills that aren't fully trained and can accept a full or partial load of points from the removed skill.
And since this is EVE there has to be penalties of some sort, so I'll go straight for the carotid artery on this one and suggest that to do so would make you lose your implants and pay some kind of clone maintenance fee.

Well i would say no... u learned the skill, now live with it, it's not harming u... but perhaps something to hide/show skills in the skill list then if ur that bothered by it?
Deleting skills and beeing able to use (part of) those skillpoints on another skill will (hopefully) never happen.

You never know when those silly skills might come in handy, either directly or as a prerequisite for something else. To give them up without getting something in return is either silly beyond belief or asinine.
People that think like this are prolly the same type that spend days "cleaning up" their assets list.
I wonder how many people trashed/reprocessed now quite valuable Damage Control mods cuz they had no value before the RMR patch?

why on earth would you want to delete them. I have loads of SP that I never take advantage of for example I never really got no with large railguns or blasters prefereing projectiles and energy weapons.
That does not mean the large hybrid skill is causing me any issues and should at some point in the future Railguns become uber for some reason I can go buy a Megathron and dont have to re-train the skill.
Maybe im missing your point ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So? They were utterly useless pre-RMR. Doesn't mean people who reproc'd them were wrong in doing so. Should we keep crap loot around for no reason then, just in case it gets patched to uberness in a year?

It is the new e-peen thing. The fewer skills trained with much SP the better. I'd be glad to get rid of my mining skills, because they will never serve me again, and they look bad. I hate having level 1 and 2's cluttering my character sheet. (Oh, and I recently had to upgrade my clone, which sucked)

Because some of us like to have a clean skillsheet, a perfect skillsheet so to speak. I have a Minmatar RP'ing alt, whom I wanted to be a pure Minmatar char, no unnecessary skills at all. However, when I created him, I accidentically got Small Energy Turret lvl 1 in the package. Now he has something like 15m SP, and all gunnery skills to lvl 5 (except that skill pestering my perfect tree)
Is this so hard to understand? ___________________________________________

True, you're not asking for people to be forced to delete skills.
But you are asking CCP to devote valuable resources to coding a feature that will only be beneficial to the asthetic sensibilites of a few per cent of the playerbase.
Frankly, they've got more important things to spend their time on.

as for the op's post that you lose them.. well sure.. let the older players nerf themselves, wont bother me any
for the ppl who think that you should be able to unlearn a skill and have some of the sp put towards other skills.. it makes NO SENSE
Thats like me saying.. I dont use a VCR anymore.. so I'll unlearn its operation, and suddenly know more about gardening.. see? no sense.

There is a fix for this
If you turn the lights on and off four times before turning your computer on and only spin your chair round anti-clockwise during the loading screen three times whilst wearing a tin foil hat you'll actually stop caring that you have a skill that you no longer use . The good thing about this is that as you no longer care that your charachter has a skill that only you know you have that you just have to glance over it gives you more time to arrange everything in your house alphabeticaly and/or chronologicaly.

and also what about deleting important skills by accident..

it really isn't such a good idea. phenomenally little benefit, if any, with potential to do seriously more harm in the case of hackings, as mentioned.
can appriciate some contexts wehre a skill is completey useless, unwanted and just cluttering.... but really, its not harming you either. just ignore it.
BUT a way to purely asthetically hide a skill from the list, like for level 5 skills, so they don't show up on the list, could be cool. purely asthetic.

Very very bad example, as that is the skill that allows you to fit Shield Hardeners ... if you want to shield tank, be it now or in two years, that skill is needed.
Well, I'm not really the one to talk, as I want to have all the skills in this game, one day. I'm currently at 179 skills ... around 30 of those are mostly useless, since they are the T2 production skills, and I don't own any T2 BPO (no luck yet in the lottery).

yeah, id woche for this aswell.. id love to delete some of thous silly skills i trianed in my n00b/carebear days.. (mining skills anyone? ) id be more than happy to delete some of thous for even a 75% loss of SP from the skillpoints they keep.
the rest over SP's, should go to a SP "bank" and be directly inputed to the next skill you start training as a iminent reduction in traning time ( Normal training time - ("sp to next lvl"-"SP in bank") = time to train to next lvl)

I can't help thinking that if something like this got introduced the next big things would be: 1) complaining down the road that you deleted some skill you thought was worthless which you now need.
2) complaints and petitions because something got deleted and it was the WRONG skill (despite the fact that the devs would probably include multiple confirmations before anything went).
3) More complaints and petitions because some pre-req got deleted and now some other skill can't advance because of a bug- sooner or later something like this would hit.
4) And then lastly, some poor soul who got his password hijacked would log in to find not only has his ISK been transferred, his security trashed, he'd find that the person who did this also took a minute to delete ALL of his skills.
It seems quite a bit to put at risk to make a skill tree conform to some OCD sensibilities about neatness and order. Making Big Rocks into little rocks http://www.eve-files.com/media/corp/tcgs/jacsized.jpg

you can also log onto someone his account selfdesctruct him in space a few times and make him lose sp, there is no pointy in what you are saying.
i have this idea, make it so you can right-click on a skill and select delete. than you get a message are you sure, you click on yes. that skill becomes black and a countdown timer of 12 hours starts running. after 12 hours you can rightclick on it again and selected "delete forever" again the question yes or no, you press yes and tada skill gone..
when the tech 2 building skills came out i bought em *deep shame* i dont know why but i bought all the new skills everytime they came out.
now i noticed this makes me have 159 skils with a total of 19 lvl 0 , stuff like ice harvesting lvl 0 and lvl 0 frigate and industrial conctruction.
it doesnt look good to have every mechanic skill maxed out and new resistance skills to lvl 4 and see that ugly skill @ lvl 0 there..its my char i can decide what to del and what not _________________________________________________

No, not with the actual self-destruct option. Of course the virtual self-destruct (ie flying into the Syndicate gateway systems on a Saturday night without a clone) would work just fine.
Of course, if the account has been hijacked then there'd be nothing to stop them pressing the delete character option on the choose character screen.

Seriously, I would hate to see CCP waste more than a seconds time coding this when they coud code useful things, not just things to please people who want a pathetic perfect skilltree. Your Mining IV or whatever may be an 'embarassment' to you, or something just as silly, but if you want to go to 0.0 someday, or if you're already in 0.0 or something, and feel like sticking a couple Mining Lazers to a ship and going for a nice Mining Op, you'll like it.
Otherwise, as it serves no PRACTICAL purpose, I'd say it's a waste of time, for a useless thing, that is blatantly to do with e-peen anyway. -- bumcheekcity

Well, deleting "useless" skills option will create quite a few petitions with folks saying "oops, can I have it back, I deleted it by mistake" purpously or not. So, CCP would probably not introduce this option because it might create a nuisance for them and really not much of a benefit to the majority of players. Yet, an option to hide some skills from the view would be a welcome addition, as some folks here mentioned.

There is no drawback to having more skills. Therefore there is no point wasting dev time to code a 'delete skill' option.
Number of skills, skillpoints/skill are meaningless statistics. I've got 173 skills at the moment. Most are quite low level, but ... so what if I can play with small energy weapons on my Raven? Or have refining skills that don't help me be an ultra PvPer?
Clone costs are about the only argument I see, but anyone who can't afford their clone deserves to lose 5% off their highest skill. -- We are recruiting

I think you may have hit upon an idea here:
I've often wondered why there was no mechanism in place that accommodated a character's experience in PVP, PVE, mining, manufacturing etc.
Consider a situation where a player who previously focussed on industry moves to combat. The skills he aquired in the former area are no longer exercised and so, as in real life, they degrade. -- Drawing on my fine command of the English language, I said nothing. -- |

that way everyone is happy, it adds more versatility, no problem if your hacked, and no problem if you do it by accident as you would still have the SP and could just train it again, this would help tons, but it has its pros / cons
Pros: 1 you can clean up your skill tree
2 you can unlearn skills you no longer want / need and put them into other skills
3 makes it easier to change "jobs" in the game and would keep people playing longer imho
Cons: 1 would kill skill training to anyone higher than 15 mill SP because they could just dump them all into one ship type / race
2 this creates balancing issues between new players and veterans
3 this would cause CCP to loose money in the long run because people at higher levels would be able to experiance most of the game and new items in a matter of weeks not years, and the new players would looose all interest in the game, because they could never hope to reach that level that fast
4 the only way to get rid of problem 3 would be to implement a skill system in which you just select your skills from the begining, turning EVE Online into a skirmish game, like a FPS and compleatly killing the game
you see, while some things start out as good ideas alot of the time they turn into VERY BAD things, so instead of trying to change what is already in the game, why don't we try asking for things that would either A improve the game / our needs or B add new things to the game
mabey if we ask for an interface option to "hide" unwanted skills, that way for people that just want to clean up, this would work
or go for this one, allow the deleting of skills but have a 24+ hour timer on it, and once the timer is up you have to select confirm, like the toon deletion system
problems solved?

Allows you to forget skill points instead of training them. Each level of brain surgery increases down training time by 20%
Brain Surgery 5 (Rank 5). Surgery 5 (Rank 3) Science 5 (Rank 1)
You are currently down training Mining level 3, are you sure you want to switch down training to Corporation Management now that you are part of a big corp and won't ever be the CEO? YES!

If people want to thrash skills then that's their own choice. I don't see why everyone is so opposed to it other then the valid reason that it will cost CCP time to make and especially to get rid of any bug in this.
Stop being a nanny if someone is gonna do something stupid. At least we'll get a good laugh at it.
If it's get implemented one thing: add a timer on it, just like reprocessing your char.
