I've been flying a Tristan for 0.3 sec rat hunting. I typically have done very well with it. Ion blasters, uranium charges, phalanx rockets, NOS, warrior drone. I can break the tank on the Serpentis wingleaders.
So I've been wanting to try Minmatar ships for a long time - so I went for it. Minmatar frigate to level 3 and 2 levels in small projectile. I went out with it - and I just kill SO SLOW with it. I get hit a lot less (and that is nice)... but I can't break the wingleader's tanks anymore, and even struggle damage wise with multiple cruiser spawns.
So I was mentioning my disappointment to a corpmate of mine, and he says to me "nah, you're doing it all wrong - put arties on the rifter".
Arties?!
I'm trying to get my learning skills done right now, so I don't really want to waste any more time on a fruitless pursuit - so can someone tell me - do arties on a rifter solve the problem I've talked about here?

ok to get straight to the point, using arty`s with only lvl2 in skills isnt going to be very good, yes they are ideal for not getting hit yourself but your not doing the damage per second that you need to break decent npc tanks, also amo type is all important too, if your hunting serpentis use phased plasma ammo or titanium sabot, that could be the problem if your using the wrong ammo type ---------------------------------------------

Hi hi: 2*150 auto /2*roket launcher med: ab/web/caprecharger (npc or scram for pvp) low: small armor rep/ cap relay (if u have cap problems, else a gyro)/plate or hardener (depends what ur fighting, for sansha and bloods i would use a plate and for the rest a hardener)

Edited by: Liesander on 20/02/2006 10:35:12 Xori, what exactly was your rifter setup? Its kind of hard to comment unless we know what you were having trouble with.
Personally I never had any trouble plowing through the rats. If memory serves I had something along the lines of :
High : 3 280 Arties (max arties to optimise bonus usage), 1 standard launcher Mid : AB Low : Armour Rep, MAPC (necessary)
[cant remember what i had in the other slots]
Loaded with carbonised lead I used to just fly at optimum range where rats had trouble hitting and plug away. Use the AB to maintain optimum range. Armour Rep only occasionally necessary when warping in amongst a nest.
This setup seemed fine for various missions from minmatar agents. |

3x 200mm autos and 1 rocket launcher. then a decent ab in perma mode gets u running. beside rockets thers pretty much nothing going to hit u.
al u have to do is orbite the mob at ~2500m and let the 200mm autos do the rest for u. takes soem time but works great.
dont use 150mm,, they eat far to much ammo ------------------------- got a problem with my typos? then go to ur mom and start crying :P |

with the new tracking bonus, arties can hit. But you need the frigate skill all the way up. -

I moved to gallente space cause I wanted to bring down NPC ships in a firagte, but in Caldari space there's too many missile cruisers that I just couldn't evade.
I use a rifter with 3 200mm Prototype automatic cannons, 1 Knave Vampire 1 named AB, 1 Named Web, 1 Shield Hardner II 2 Named Nanofibre Structures, 1 Gyrostabilser.
And I specifically hunt Serpentis Wing Commanders. And sinced I moved to Phased Plasma ammo, its much easier to break their armour tank.
However, I do have level 5 in small projectile and level 4 in a few other gunnery skills that increase damage, and level 4 in mimnitar frigate, which I think increases damage in a rifter too, with small projectiles. So I'd say artillery is not nessecary. I'm sure with the right skills, though, you could make any setup work if you want it to.

Arties are An "Alpha Strike" Weapon.
You get better DPS from Autocannons.
someone somewhere did a graph and will be able to prove this.

First of all you need to realise that it is extremly pointless to compare how you kill, if you compare one of the highest damaging CLOSE range guns, to a completly different type of LONG range guns.
In general any close range gun will do more damage faster, than long range guns. If your concern is to kill fast, then dont even touch long range guns with a stick.
By the way, you dont mention what ship and guns you used when you first got so disappointed?
EDIT; oh and you might know that different npc have different resistances, if you hunt Serpentis you want to use as much thermal damage as possible. This means Phased Plasma for projectiles. ___________________________ Brutors Rule! My Eve-vids; Click. |
