Just finished reformatting my PC and have gone back to using 2K pro rather than XP, and it's wonderful
How many of you out there are using each one? Which do you prefer?

I'm really seriously considering it atm. I used to go for 6 months straight without needing a disk wipe + reinstall. After installing xp (2 months ago!) my computer is messed up in every possible way

Think I have now had the same XP install running completely trouble free for around 18 months now.
Actually one problem in that Service Pack 1 isn't compatible with the shiny Microsoft Bluetooth keyboard I splashed out on when they first came out. Back to using my USB one which isn't as comfortable |

2k rocks hard, unfortunately certain game producers have decided that it's time for XP for everyone ( friends of microsoft I'll bet ) 2k's support will probably run out soon. But it's so much faster then xp it's not even funny in my experience. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Edited by: Hurada on 28/02/2006 13:57:21 I've always had more luck with XP. Better stability for one thing. Both at work and at home. The worst thing about it is all that MS Jazz, funky windows and stuff, but that can be turned off

2K all the way, I hate XP and will never install it till 2K will no longer run what I want to run...
I refuse to install that uber bloated teletubbie looking excuse for a OS that is known as XP...(yes i know you can turn all that stuff off, But a gig for a single user OS? byte me)... ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

Still, I'd prefer to run linux, but EVE on wine isn't stable enough.

Edited by: Grez on 09/10/2006 17:41:40 Uninstall the XP theme and download something called a "BricoPack", it modifies the classic skin, and doesn't need the theme to run - no extra resources and a fancy looking XP install.
Also, you might want to keep a few programs handy, like Registry Medic, System Mechanic, and Diskkeeper to name a few, they'll help your machine a bucketload.
There's also a ton of services you can disable (like wireless support if you used wires), which helps speed up XP. I currently have a beast of a machine and it works wonders, but these kind of tweaks work wonders for normal installs. Got my XP boot time to under 30 seconds on my other machine (just an ordinairy AMD 64 3500+, 1GB of ram and a X1800XT).
If you know what you're doing, you can strip away most of the generic services, and get it into a rather nicely tweaked and suped up version of W2k (since XP is just a prettied up W2K). ---

On the back-end XP and 2k are nearly the same. 2k was developed as an NT replacement which means it handles server calls better than XP, though XP is more for every day use.
I use to use 2k exclusively until I caved and gave XP a shot. XP is far and away better than 2k just for compatability reasons. I'm not sure why you all are seeing issues with the themes, classic or otherwise, because by todays standards they use up nearly no resources, relatively speaking. I have a fairly dated system with an Athlon 3200, X800XL, and a gig of ram and I can run games like FEAR and Battlefield with a majority of the options at mid range or better and the little bit of resources that themes use would make minor differences to the way my system runs.
Maybe you, who are having problems, need some more ram. -------------------------------------- http://digitalsdomain.spaces.live.com/ <--- Check it out.

Nono, I was just giving them advise if they don't want to use XP purely because of the theme service and other such things. XP is identicle to W2K, so there's almost no point in saying "2K is betar!!11". If you have 1GB or more of RAM, XP better for you, if you don't, then W2K is just a cut down version of XP, with none of the generic bits (which you can disable). ---

I have XP Pro on several computers, I like it... as much as one can like a Windows OS. It's better than 2000 imo. 2k is better for computers of its generation, but for the computers I use, XP Pro is the way to go... until they finall start releasing games that are Linux capable without all the damn work to get them that way.
XP Home is a joke though, don't ever use it... ever. --- --- --- ---

I'm not sure how you would qualify this statement.
I know many people who use XP and have not had any stability issues. I also know some who have. Both of these statements are similar for 2k. One thing to keep in mind here is that I am surrounded by quite a few tech-heads which is where 2k comes in.
If as many people were using 2k as do XP, I am sure you would see equal if not more complaints against 2k as it was not made for an all inclusive OS which we see with driver support as well as software support. Personally, I have seen 2k blue screen because of software. I have yet to see XP blue screen because of software. Keep in mind that by "software" i am referring to reputible software that has gone gold.
The only time I have seen XP bluescreen is when I had a stick of memory go ****-up.
As far as lock-ups are concerned. I've had it happen on both XP and 2k and under both, it was rare occurances. -------------------------------------- http://digitalsdomain.spaces.live.com/ <--- Check it out.

The Linux arguement would have held up in the 90's, but unless you are just using the console and running command lines, the GUI shells are hardly more stable than XP. Whenever you try to merge user friendliness with functionality and power, you are creating an unstable playground. If you look at some of the more "user friendly" distros of Linux, you will see a scary trend. It seams to me that xp is a dumbed down version of windows.

Again, in the windows world you are a minority. If equal population was using both OS's, you would most likely see more problems with 2k due to compatability issues. -------------------------------------- http://digitalsdomain.spaces.live.com/ <--- Check it out.

Some distros (such as red hat) are know to use beta versions of stuff, which is probably part of that.
I use mainly win2k myself, but I'm planning to switch completely to gentoo (or some other linux distro) some day.

Thanks for sharing ;) Its amazing how computers work.. back then I had 8MB *whooopin* RAM and a 33Mhz CPU. It was awesome. Now people started to believe a GIGABITE of RAM is not enough.. ROFL. They still do the very exact same thing over and over again but it "look better" now.
Some other OSes are lagging behind for various reasons which are not always obvious to understand. I never touched 2k. My brother in law is a PC nerd and he swear by 2k even tho he have XP now because of some games... I always been with Mac OS and Linux. I never bought a 'PC' like you all have. I loathe Windows and will always do.
XP might be a fine OS (heck! my mother can find her way around!!) but it stop right here. It has not much good to offer for me..

Meh, I think it all depends on your experiences with the OS and the GUIs (sort of like how I won't use AMD processors for anything but cooking, but others swear by them). Personally though, I don't blame the OS for something a freelanced interface caused. Even today though, Linux remains better than any Mac or Windows OS. And, the only problems I've ever really noticed with Linux was that we had to keep reinstalling it every time Asteriks(x?) decided to update it's programming (that was an Asteriks(x) thing though, not a Linux foul). And, let us not forget, both OS are buggy... or can be... but one is $150 OEM and one is free.
Sorry for changing the subject though...

Only 3 versions are going to be of interest to the everyday consumer. Home, Premium and Ultimate. Home being like XP Home, Premium being like Pro + Media Center, and Ultimate, well that aint just a marketing name :) Its aimed at the hardcore users, and tbh, only the really hardcore users will benefit from it.
Starter is for poor countries who are noobs. Business is essencially premium without media center and other cool stuff, and Enterprise is meant for high end workstations and has Bitlocker and UNIX app support.
