okay almost in a large barge and looking for some advise.
Is there anyway to tank the large one to survive a couple of volleys and warp while solo mining, been trying to run the numbers(which i admit i aint really good at) and the barge dont look like it could stand up to a NPC spawn let alone a pvp encounter.
Guess i am just looking for idea's here, i can take my domi (have done so in the past) just really gotten used to mining in a barge and wanted to know if it was even feasable.
And my head hurts from trying to figure it out on paper
Thanks in advance for any replies

Im the same with figures just gives me brain fade I can only tell you that they dont stand up well to an attack Mine nearly got blown up in 0.9 by a noob in a kestral before concorde got there. (think he was trying to be a nasty pirate Less than a third armour left and no shield. must have been less than 30 secs or so until he got vapourised by concorde. So in low sec a normal pvp player would probably kill you with a couple of easy rounds.

Covetors can tank 0.7 spawn passive. 2x PDUIIs (i think they fit cant rem) and your right.
might even passivetank .6
.5? pfft. doubt it.. .4> NO CHANCE. a pirate rocks up.. hell prolly web you, warp scramble you let his drones play.... In a barge your vulnerable to just about anything pvp :) Never tried it, but a noob ship or a tech1 Tier1 frig could prolly roast you....

Edited by: Wokrred on 01/03/2006 11:54:02 I've tanked in a 0.3 system (serpentis spawns) without too much trouble. Use normal strip miners to stay on the cheap and be sure that your insured. If you know a builder or can do a perfect build yourself and a good ME BPC you can keep your ship costs down also.
My setup: 3x strip miners 1x ore scanner 1x small armor rep II, 1x warp stab
Drones: 1 each of all damage types (med) Last drone you tailor more to your rats but a extra thermal (hammerhead) is a good choce for the fifth.
After that you need to have a fast scout ship (atron, condor, etc) and use it to make your BM's. Just make sure you put some distance from the warp in point to the belt, it will help buy you time.
Max out your scanner range and check it if any possable hostiles jump in-system. Also knowing when the system is the busy with pirates. Until then use a cheap ship like a osprey until you can feel out the system when it's safe to mine there.
Most your have to lose in the above setup is around 9 to 12 mil, mainly the cost of your stripminers if a pirate finds you.
Edit: To the poster before me, I have tanked a punisher and nearly taken out his ship before he warped off with 40% hull left.

We mine with a large barge in 0.2/0.1. It IS doable, but you need a friend who can agress the bigger spawns. I think its possible to mine alone in 0.3, but you have to pay a lot of attention to your local/overviw.
A good set of Instas/Safespots are really helpfull and dont forget to align correct before you start mining. Its a pain to align a barge when somebody is already shooting at you ;-).
Wish you safe mining ;-) Elena

Andy is correct. Do not attempt to tank the damage. Have your drones kill the targets instead of mining ore for you. You may need to get a few replacement drones once in a while, but it's not a big deal.
You can also team up with other mulitple barges and use your drones collectively on the targets, and they'll explode quite nicely.

I'm dumb in mine in lowsec all the time in a covetor. Find a quiet system, align your ship to a station to warp quicker, and keep an eye on local. It has been months since I've lost a mining barge.

I lost 2 retrievers on Saturday. My first and probably last time trying to mine with them. A pvp rat will kill you faster than you can blink and even the computer controlled spawns will be more than you can handle. I even had protection but the pvp-player knows better than to tackle a fighting ship... they are going to gun for you.
Good luck,

Good Covetor Rat Setup:
Mid Slot:
Cap Injector w/charges (beats Cap Recharger I or II hands down)
Low Slots:
Small Armor Repairer II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
Train up all the new Armor Specialization skills. This setup is recommended for rats only. Another player could warp scramble you easily before you can warp out.
Above setup can tank a 0.1 cruiser spawn with little difficulty (battlecruiser spawn long enough to warp out). With the barges large cargo hold, you can easily hold plenty of charges (with the new smaller charge sizes... even more now).
If you have not already done so, also train up Repair Systems to level 5. It decreases your armor reps cycle time.
If you also have excellent drone skills, you can also destroy the rats and never skip a beat mining. __________

I'm not even in a covetor yet, I'm in a retriever and I solo mine in 0.5 space all the time, AND have only twice in a month had to warp out due to rats.
I have no idea why it seems like some of you guys are having trouble with a covetor that has more shields, more armor, and double the drone bay of my little Retriever..

I been mining in .3 space for along time now with my coverter and 5 hammerhead drones solo and never have lost a ship to rats the drones will tack anything that shows up by NPC rats. Just have a small armor rep on.

can use a covetor alone in 0.5. low slot: T2 small repper, cap power relay med: T2 cap rec
can tank gallente spawns forever, for some you need to kill them with 5 hammerheads, but its not a problem at all.
