almost every asteroid belt i visit has loads of conainers in it, what are they for and how do do i use one myself if i want to start mining?

You need anchoring lvl 1 and an indy to use them
First of all you buy a giant container and place it in the cargo hold of the indy. Than you fly out to the belt in a lower than 0.8 system and anchor it. try to anchor it near the roids but keep in mind that it need to be atleast 5 km away from other cans or roids.
Now you can put a password on it and place your mined minerals into that giant secure cargo container.
In other words save mining and cluthering of the belts.

Roughly an hour if unamed and two hours if named I think

Your can will stay anchored, essentially, forever. It might go after a month or some other really long time, but it won't leave as long as you know about it... (wouldn't be surprised if it was to be removed after a month of dissuse... but do not know how that works)
Note: Players can destroy your Canister... this gives a big hit to Sec Status, but Pirates don't care about this. Also, Make sure you anchor it or else someone can just come and scoop up your can, reprocess it, and take all the goodies out of it

naming doesn't have anything to do with it. It's 1 hours + a random amount. I've had cans pop after less than 2 hours, and I've had them last over 24.
