Edited by: Confucius Yen on 01/03/2006 20:18:51 Really, why and when do you PvP?
It seems to me that most PvP right now is done for one of two reasons: A) "protecting territory" from random_guy_5023 who was warping through B) boredom
Are there any real wars going on right now? As in wars for a definate purpose? Is there an alliance out there somewhere that is outgrowing its constellation and seriously able to move into a second one?
Bear with me, I'm a self-professed newb. I just can't figure out why people seem to like PvP so much in this game when it accomplishes so little. With the exception of ganking full miner ships (which are never full because they were caught at the gate or not considered worth chasing) there doesn't seem to be a real and consistant profit in it and it seems like even the "crowded" empire space is significantly too large for its population to have real competition over resources (except omber, of course).
Before you say anything, this is posted on an alt because although I am curious about it, I am wary of posting it on my main.

try asking WoW PvPers the same question ^_^ Actually EVE's PvP is one of the most logical PvP out there comparing to other MMOGs. Actually fighting for territories is a big reason, control over territory = money income, everything in this world(real and unreal) is decided by money... so here you go, here is the reason :)

As a player who has, in 7 months, NEVER pirated, and is a complete carebear and still enjoys the game, it is very playable in PVE mode, but you cant just mission run. People PVP because they enjoy the buzz, and because it's profitable. 2 fine reasons, I must say. -- bumcheekcity

I PvP because everytime I kill somebody, and see those expensive loot, I know how much I have emotionally hurt them. Feels fun, and good after that. Goes the same for them when I get popped too.

Wars are fought for many reasons. Off the top of my head:
Revenge - someone insulted you or killed one of your ships. Territory & Resources - claiming and holding space; controlling access to the best minerals, moons, and rats. Idealogical differences - freespace idealists vs territorialist pigdogs. Slavers vs freedom fighters. Caldari vs Gallente. Etc etc. Profit - Mercs. Piracy. Challenge - Fighting a bigger or better equipped enemy. Fun - Includes all of the above!

Edited by: Wrayeth on 01/03/2006 21:43:54 I PvP because it's fun. It's not about profit - I only care about ISK in this game inasmuch as it affects my ability to get better ships and modules to use in PvP, and also to replace losses (I like flying expensive ships ). Sure, it's definitely nice when the guy I just ganked drops some good loot, but even if he didn't, I'll still have had fun - it's about the challenge, and setting myself against another player (or group of players) to see who comes out on top. -Wrayeth

you serious? well lets see of the top of my head in the past month or so we have had: IN THE NORTH the 5 vs Fe/PA/NBSi which then evolved into Fe/5 Vs Pa/NBSI add a few more into the mix Fe/5/KAOS Vs G/Iron G/Iron vs PA/NBSi
IN THE SOUTH SA/huzzah vs Fix which has evolved into Sa vs bob/fix/euxo/tribal souls/MC/Triad/Battle Angles and a patridge in a pear tree.(the list of enemies against SA is fluid) RA vs LV/KOS/Chimp (i think)
ELSEWERE several wars involving Goonfleet.
(this should be fairly accurate but gives the general idea)
and that excludes several dozen smaller corporation wars.
so yes there is a hell of a lot of meaningfull warfare in eve, if you want to keep track and dont mind seeing a lot of people frothing at the mouth read this forum _____ This is a Stain Alliance Fighter. Actually, thats why I came here. I just don't see much really happening so far other than the way-too-frequent gatecamps. Man, I'm not even a month old and am already thinking of setting up camp in my own little corner of our 0.0 territory. Maybe I'm just playing in off-hours for this area or even this game . Either that or noone else really wants to take it from my corp. My point was that I've neither witnessed nor even heard more than faint forum-stories of a corp expanding outside "its constellation". I was thinking this game was going to be more along the lines of big yet full with areas created as the population grows but it just seems...empty. CCP says we're hitting milestones in population but I still don't see more than possibly 1 ship show up in my belts during a day of mining, and I'm in the same Empire space you all claim is so over-populated for god's sake.

Read the "corporations and alliance discussion" category. You'll see a lot about the absolutely massive wars that are going on right now (and also a lot of smacktalk, but that's not unusual). Over this past weekend, there was a 200-ship fleet battle up north, basically G/IRON/RAZOR against ATUK/FE.
EDIT: Someone made a video of part of the fight, which can be found here. -Wrayeth

Ship setups, tactics, teamwork etc.

Edited by: Demangel on 02/03/2006 01:15:14 /Sarcasm I personaly love when self proclaimed care bears strut in proudly proclaiming they don't PVP, ask why they others do it, and then begin to tell us all that it accomplishes nothing, or what IS good about it... /Sarcasm off
FFS if your going to comment on a game play style (for good or ill), try it out for a little while then get back to us.
Profit: To be brutaly honest, Unless MAYBE (I never did it)your a really good pirate and do it for the ransom, PVP is anything but profitable... especialy in alliance terriotory...
Loot from miners/haulers: In 0.0 the oposite is true, you don't undock your hauler unless at least half the trip is going to be with a full cargo hold... Thus hauler kills very often = windfalls of loot. OR easy profitless ganks.
Doesn't accomplish anything: Tell that to any corp or allaince that has lost a war to another corp or alliance... particularly in 0.0, and know that your being called a Noob behind your back if not straight to your face. If it didn't accomplish anything there wouldn't be so many people frantically trying to online and destroy POS's... Alliances would serve no real purpose save for a bigger chat comunity/corp structure, and nobody would bother buying fielding using and risking Dreads or carriers... Simply put... PVP does a LOT.
Now I know I'm coming off a bit harsh against the PVP virgins, I mean really I have very little against your chosen style of play, and don't mind being asked about mine, so the OP isn't really the one I'm adressing any of this agression toward, but to march in here and tell PVP players all about PVP without having once gotten involved in it except by accident once (if even that) in low sec, is just plain stupid.
And don't think that those alliance wars going on in distant space have no effect on you... Every time I lose a ship I have to consider making a trip to your carebear paradise for a replacement ship/setup if nobody is online in my corp/alliance who can provide me with what I need or put it on market. I buy the crap you spend countless hours carebearing to build.
So why do I PVP? Well because it's a bigger chalenge than ratting or mining (even when killing a ratter or miner), it's tons more exciting (because I know I stand to lose something just as valuable if not more so). and because (especialy if your in an alliance), it DOES serve a useful purpose to an alliance. If I didn't fight, I wouldn't be able to rat and mine and do PVE things here when things quite down.
I can't say I'd make the best pirate, simply because while I enjoy fighting, I don't enjoy robbing folks. It's just not my thing, and I don't judge anyone who does it.
So I won't gank your hauler in empire unless we have bad standings (low sec not near a station or gate), but will nuke your ass if your not supposed to be in the territory my alliance claims as soveriegn, even if your not coming up to cause trouble, it doesn't matter, this is my space, my corp pays taxes and has to meet requirements to be here, which in turn I must help pay. Part of that price is ISK/Loot/Minerals/whatever needs doing, and part of it is keeping it safe, and clean of all freeloaders and hostiles. When you come to my home and start chewing on my asteroids, asteroids I have lost ships to protect and keep as part of my territory, and don't pay similarly as I do, "you have insulted me, my family and the shaolin temple..." Prepare to die. It doesn't matter if my alliance doesn't offer miner/ratter passes, if they did I wouldn't kill you if you had one, since we don't I kill you period.... If I can't I make sure others know where you are and what your flying and where your headed so others can.
I wouldn't do it this way if what I did was meaningless... if it served no purpose, and didn't get me something the fact that PVP happens to also be a crapload of fun is just icing on the cake.
End of story. Now stop telling ME how PVP works, and I will stop telling you how dumb you are.
Galaxion > If you drove a car shaped like a thorax women would call you Demangel > Dude... I would call.. Demangel > wait that sounded g@y I bet. Galaxion > Just a bit.

PVP gives meaning to the game. If you have any sort of ambition, you are doing a form of PVP (be it direct combat or otherwise).
This is a game of real player empires, alliances, corporations and individuals, all competing to be the best in a certain area. There really isn't anything like the satisfaction of beating your enemies, for whatever reason.
Plus, the adrenaline kick is something singularly wonderful. I never even got that from playing twitch games like first-person shooters. ------------------------------------------- "Never underestimate the power of language."

I mined and ran missions for the first six months I was in game, realized how much fun PvP was and have decided to liberate those who mine and mission run of the boredom that are those two things and give them a taste of the true fun of EVE.
It is working too, at least on the surface, they say words after I kill them that I know they'd never use toward and asteroid or NPC rat.
