Took advantage of the downtime yesterday to try X3: Reunion. (Game's been out a few months now so apols if its failings have already been brutally exposed in an earlier thread.)
For those not aware, it's a space fighting/trading/exploring, ELITE-style game, or even EVE-style (but not a MMORPG).
The game is virtually unplayable as released owing to numerous bugs. The developers have released a 1.3 patch, and (hilariously) an entirely new manual as a pdf on their website. There's no tutorial, which is a problem given how unintuitive the command interface is.
To give it its due, the graphics are pretty good, altho framerates suffer when there's too much going on (like, a battle) (and, btw, my machine comfortably meets the recommended specs). One of the first plot missions has you as "rear gunner" as your ship tries to escape a city. Cool concept, but sadly almost unplayable owing to the framerate problems.
To be fair, I have only played it for something like 6 hours total, and there are hardcore fans who say that if you stick with it, it improves. But my 6 hours have included magic moments like watching the autopilot take about 15 attempts to dock me at a station, while pirates were still blasting away at me (and therefore the station).
There are aliens called the Borons and the Khaak; names to conjure with, indeed. The voice acting is appalling but that's par for the course.
Anyway, if you were thinking of trying it, my advice is: don't.

Definately not an easy game to get into, I lasted about the same ammount of time, granted it looks sweet but its harder to get into than my secret pie store. Maybe one day when i've finally become one with my desk chair I might give it another go. Until then its a no no.

I enjoyed it but it is an absolute pain in the backside to get into! I gave up on X2 because of this and it is only because I tried really hard that I managed to get anywhere in X3. ==================================== EVEkill (Founder, ex-developer) Visit our homepage |

i got annoyed with it wery quickly it's hard to grasp, it dossen't look that good (everything is just cluterd) it just feels unserius and silly, wery unbeliveble
it's like a bad version of freelancer that tried to go eve but failed misserably and got cancer from trying
i even had to unplug my cd writer/burner as the copy protection refused to let my game run with it you have to love when you have to no-cd games that you actualy buy to get them to work, right?
