Originally by: Alice Beeblebrox in 0.0, I changed systems and then jumped back ... if there is a frame drop, it is probably not more than 10fps (mid 30's to mid 20s for me)
in the cedega client I would consistently get just above 20 frames (sometimes below). with wine, I don't see the fps rate drop below 20.
Also, I did a whois lookup on the IP address and it is owned by CCP, I also noticed that the news pane in character selection is empty. Could it be that this IP address has the news feed?
I tried to open the IP with firefox but it reported that the connection was reset.
Maybe there is a difference between how cedega and wine handle browser engine calls (wine redirects them to firefox) thus causing the problem?
Also, instead of setting the IP to localhost and shutting down apache, set the IP to some weird combination of characters. no need to shut down apache for eve :) "Only wimps use tape backup: _real_ men just upload their important stuff on ftp, and let the rest of the world mirror it ;)" -Linus "... regedit and poke around the software/wine/Direct3D area for the the offscreenrendering setting, if it's pbuffer set to fbo that fixed the hooge frame drop for me.
Did you test this in empire? even with fbo buffer i had the frame drops there.
Initially I didn't have fbo set and had a serious drop in FPS with every jump. Enabled fbo, did around 6 jumps with no drop. When I docked up however, FPS dropped from 100 to 20 and stayed that way (after undocking as well).

wanting to use linux fedora 8 to play eve
so i go through the joy of upgrading fedora 5 > 6 > 7 > 8
This forum has lots of bits of info on it but only if you seem to be really linux savvy and or have used it for quite a while. I now understand basic unix commands and have went through the fedora upgrade process since Friday but i'm missing something in regards to downloading the full eve client client...
How large is the linux fedora *.rpm supposed to be ? When i download it from www.eve-online.com it shows up as 887935 bytes. That doesn't seem to be the game client I need. :(
What did I miss?
It appears that I may need Wine or Cedega - and with cedega costing additonal isk ill not be using it.
Anyone have some links which may help? I did read through the ubunto wine setup and im not sure how much of that will relate to fedora.
Thanks in advance.

Edited by: Sevarus James on 12/12/2007 10:49:02 Edited by: Sevarus James on 12/12/2007 10:46:47 Mini, you install the 'stub'. Then you run the application either from the command line or via the menu (see my sticky first pic link up top in the fps thread).
The FIRST time this runs, it goes through the license agreements and such and THEN downloads all of the necessary pieces including the client.
Edit here----it would ALSO HELP if you'd check the stickies up top...you would have found this link:

You do not have to pay for anything other than EVE, and then only after the trial is up.

I'll bet pennies to peanuts that the http fetching uses the BindIOCompletion callback that the WINE patch here toggles. As it's still a stub function, it still doesn't work, just returns a value that at least allows EVE to run. --- I use Gentoo/Linux and Gentoo uses software I write |

Yep, I'm pretty much empire based :) Very weird...

Yeah fbo doesn't fix my frame drop either, and I've tested in low and high-sec.

Annoyingly enough, it did fix mine. Then in a fit of stupid curiosity I went and fiddled with something else.... back to square one and in the same boat as you guys.

It seems to freeze when approaching a gate for the first time in a session (2 - 4 seconds) here, but it is performing a metric ton of disk reads... so forgivable; specially as I'm on a laptop and thus a slow disk. Not yet had it drop dead though; but then I can't test jump drives

Yet 0.0 is fine, i flew into all that is unholy. Jita. Then upon leaving every jump i went i suffered a 5 fps drop until i bottomed out around 3 fps...

Jep, I have the same problem!! Can anybody help us plz. Everytime I try to reinstall the game, I have to download the client all over again Is there no 'good' download link for the EveOnline-linux-xxxxxx 41736.dat file? When the download is finished by the cedega injstaller, I don't see the client in one of the folders assigned on the linux installer guide. Thx to all

Did you install the arial fonts? not sure if their even needed anymore but worth a try ^^ Other option would be to change the prefs.ini in ~./wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/< username >/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/settings and add "eulaagreed=-1162749333" in there. I guess the number is some timestamp that has to be older than your current system time or so ^^

Using git version of wine with elf patch and modification to the host, I can run the premium client with premium graphics enabled full shadows and hdr. Audio ALSA is running fine also. FPS are ok on a 8800gtx but a little lower than windows.
However, I have 2 major problems which prevent me from playing: - fps drops after each jump. I drop by aprox 10 fps after each jump (tried in empire not 0.0). - Target problem. Evertime I'm near a big structure in space (station, gate etc ...) everywhere I target in space, I target it. Even if I'm not facing it's way. Only workaround is to target an icon in space. Not sure if it's a bounding box problem as collision detection seems to be fine.
I did not notice any other problem but I could not run extensive tests.

I can't run EVE on archlinux.... I can access to the login page (stopping and restarting the network, for some reason I can't block the ip with /etc/hosts) but after It has loaded the introduction it blocks. That's the error I get:
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000028 at address 0x487cd5 (thread 000e), starting debugger...
the error is the same I get if I don't disconnet the network before the splash screen, but if I try to disconnect again after the login page eve crashes...

Uhm no... I followed the instructions on winehq and on this post but I missed this step
anyway I'm sure that the problem is in the connection, I found that after the login page it calls the same address after the introduction

the proof that wine is better than cedega. Yes..its working with only adding a line to /etc/hosts. And it still didn't crash with shadows and hdr off. Picture

Stick it in your wine-git directory and run
# patch -p1 < trinity.diff
Then recompile wine.

I never had fps drop. I'm using the ip to localhost at /etc/hosts . Maybe that happens in systems with billboard.

Unfortunately that never really worked for me, it let's me past the character selection screen but after about 4-5 jumps I'm still down to slide show fps.

Try adding "87.237.39.200 localhost" to your hosts file. EVE downloads data for the billboards from a webserver, that is one of the IP's, im not sure yet if there are others. Once blocked there are no more slowdowns ^^
