Just made a Gallente. Is mining more profitable then hunting pirates? I read up on a lot of the post here and I still can't decide if I would have more fun making money from mining or hunting pirates. Any type of input or advice would be very welcome.
Also tempted to get a 2nd a/c with that power of 2 promotion if I have a fun exp. Any suggestion on what I skills I should concentrate on so I can max. out my ISK making ability?

Nyabinghi of the Brutor Tribe welcomes you. Mining is easy and profitable and may be a good way to start out and familiarize yourself. It takes time but there's lot's of money to be made. It is however a little boring. Hunting pirates (one of my current professions) can be quit stimulating...and risky.
there are other things to do though. Be a courier, buy and sell goods on the market, and such.

Well, you can make money doing it either way. Also through missions with an agent.
You should probably try them all out first, before deciding where to focus your skills on. Would not be good to devote a lot of time to Mining, for example, to discover that you really hate it further down the line.
You probably ought to get a few Learning Skills up, while training some basic everyday skills... that way when it's time to get focused on your career, the learning speeds will be faster. _______ See you in Vegas! |

Everyone who's not done it for long seems to think mining is just rock blasting all day. There are other aspects of mining that you can go on to like manufacturing as well. Once you have mined your ore, use it to make mods and items for the community instead of just selling ore and minerals for isk. Find an area where certain mods are not so easily available and set up shop.
GC13 has created a site with loads of info for manufaturers working wiht blueprints which I think is a kind of builders bible. http://evefiles.mysterious-mysteries.com/eve-online_science_and_industry_guide.txt
When you sit in roid belts for long enough, you get NPC rats that you can pop for some fun and extra isk while you mine. So it's not all boredom.
Thre's nothing to stop you mission running as well when you're not mining.

Ok, just bought myself a Navitas for mining. Also bought a mining drone. What else should I buy skills and equipments wise? What should I be aiming for next as a miner? Like what skills or ship is next for me? Thx again for any advice!

Edited by: GC13 on 10/03/2006 07:11:42 The Thorax would probably be your best bet for a post-Navitas miner, though I don't know the Gallente progression. Mining in my Osprey (Caldari), I could make 2M-2.5M ISK an hour in 0.5 space, jetcanning and doing my own hauling.
And if you're interested in my guide, note that the link in my sig has a page where you can see the .txt that was linked to, an html version, and a PDF version.

To get that the suggestion is pretty simple..
1. Don't train learning skills yet (you don't need them that early)
2. Don't grind for cash. ISKs are helpful, but don't become a slave to ISK. Cash will roll in anyway..
3. Do whatever you want to do. Sure, you can mine all day and get lots of cash, but if it's no fun for you then why do it? Or the other way around.. you can do missions all day and get cash and loot, but if you prefer it a bit more relaxing then why do it?

What Knoppaz said.
Also, once you get drone skills up somewhat (which you should do ASAP as Gallente) a Vexor makes a better miner than a Rax. Cheaper, too. -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

Edited by: SadisticSavior on 10/03/2006 15:51:26 I started with mining, and then started pirate hunting once I could afford a nice frigate (in my case, a Merlin and a Rifter).
I was making about 15-30k per run with mining. I made a lot more than that hunting pirates, but mining is steady income. There are times when I have to go through a dozen asteroid belt warps to even find pirates sometimes.
But pirate hunting gave me something mining never did...THE BIG SCORE. This is definitely not common, but the fact that it is possible makes pirating better IMO. You cant get a random chance to be rich like that if you are mining.

Don't forget, the higher you get the better the loot will be. The last missions I did (some level2, no risk while having patch-lag ) I got several named guns and 2 named ECM, one of it being a hypnos. All in all the loot was worth several millions and as said, it was just some level2 missions..
On the other side, the higher you get in mining, the better ore you will mine while having increased yield.
Both is profitable. Other things can be profitable too if done right (e.g. trading, manufacturing). Take your pick

Mining, ratting, and running missions all make money. Each has up days and down. I would caution about mining to the exclusion of missions and ratting. You can mine your way to a battleship, but being a battle tested pilot can't be bought and there is no skill called "In Game Combat Experience."
I advise mixing things up to understand the game, and to keep things fun. Endless mining for weeks has caused more than one player to cancel their Eve account. Just an FYI.

Pirate hunting seems to be another option I'm looking at. At lvl 3 Gallente frigate skill, what frigate should I buy and what type of weapons should I get for it? Also, what sec. lvl systems should I be hunting in? What would be my hunting limit be, like what should I run from?

Quote: Pirate hunting seems to be another option I'm looking at. At lvl 3 Gallente frigate skill, what frigate should I buy and what type of weapons should I get for it?
Weapons are purely a matter of choice. Most ships give bonuses to one weapon type or another...so that is a good place to start.
Even though i am Caldari, I fly a Rifter (Minmatar). I started in .7 systems to get my feet wet and now hunt in .5. In a tier 3 frigate (not sure what it is for gallente...it is the Rifter for Minmatar and the Kestrel and Merlin for Caldari), you should be able to handle anything in a .6 system and most things in a .5.
I chose the Rifter because it looks cool and has a larger powergrid than the Merlin. I use lasers, so I dont get the ship bonuses...nothing is cut and dry in Eve...it all comes down to your personal preferences.
Quote: Also, what sec. lvl systems should I be hunting in?
If you have the skills for a tier 3 frigate, I would say .6 and .7 systems at least. .5 if you are feeling confident. From what I understand, at .4 and below you will start running into cruisers (nevermind PC pirates).
Quote: What would be my hunting limit be, like what should I run from?
You will usually have enough warning to know when to run. I have had to run twice, and both times it was about the time my shields went down. I can take several volleys on my armor...usually enough to get me into warp.
I am now hunting in .5 systems and I have not yet run across any pirates with Warp scramblers, but a lot of them do use ECM, which can be almost as annoying.

Another thing I noticed. Under skill req. for say Gallente Crusier 1, it has a primary and 2ndary skill req.? So you can either get Spaceship Command 3 or Gallente Frigate 4 and Spaceship Command 1 to train that skill?

Saddly not.
You need to have those things before you can fly that type of ship.
Let's say you want to fly a Celestis
You need Gallente Cruiser 2. But to train Gallente Cruiser, you need to have Gallente frigate 4 witch frigate requires Space ship command to level 1.
However Spaceship command needs to be level 3 for Cruiser also.
To get Cuirser you must have: Spaceship Command 3 Gallente Frigate 4
