Edited by: Lewisynn Clark on 11/03/2006 10:47:38 Still new to Eve, but, i've read up on the forums and listened in-game alot. What's up with the bunches of random named people. I've played alot of different mmorpg's and often there are people with 'unusual' or rude or quickly made up names, but, this is the first game that i've seen with large amounts of characters that appear to be made up by the same person that are just random letters, as if some guy was starting 1500 new accounts a day and couldn't be troubled to even name them something silly. Some company decided to exploit Eve with macros and hired one guy to do it all by himself with 200 laptops? or am I misunderstanding and is that some kind of chinese insult?

i dunno, i think maybe not. i mean, if you were a macrominer, you'd probably make your name STEVE JONSON or something. so as not to attract attention. and you'd make your other 7 guys JIM JONSON and BOB JONSON, wouldnt you? I mean, you'd spend that little effort wouldnt you? makes me wonder if it's not some kind of insult.

Not if your first language isn't English and you've just created the account by giving a trial CD key to a free email address for the umpteenth time.

I understand that some of the non-English players that use languages like Chinese have names that show up like that, but they're often confused with macrominers who make randomly-generated names for their macro bots. Easiest way to tell the difference is to do something to them. Plink them with a single shot. If the ship reacts to it and hauls ass or returns fire, chances are it's not a macro bot.

Macro miner these days refers to any group of miners that is farming ore for ISK, whether with a macro or not.
Farmers are very obvious--all characters created on the same day, all in the same belt, all in the same noob corp, etc.

I already reported one lot around my home system. All noobs for 1 or 2 days, all in the same corp and all names in caps. Three more experienced characters with Covetors and the rest hauling. Totally wiped out 4 roid belts in a day.
It's where my corp has it's base and mines for minerals to manufacture and since the belts don't respawn every DT now, it's real annoying to find everything gone when you need more minerals.

Is macro mining, ore farming, etc, considered to be exploits? If not, then isn't complaining about them equivalent to complaining about gate camps? If so, then it can be petitioned and presumably somebody will be banned.

Actually using macros to mine (by automatically moving ore from your hold to a jetcan) is prohibited by the game's Terms of Service. It's not strictly an "exploit" because it uses third-party means to accomplish it, rather than an in-game loophole. But it's definitely forbidden and looked down upon.
But be careful that you don't take the witch hunt too far. As long as macros aren't involved, there's nothing to prohibit anyone from stripping an entire belt of ore, and just because they ignore you doesn't make them "macro-miners".
Bots are bad for the game, but so are people who hassle everyone who seems "suspicious".

Plus, if CCP *****s the whip, where would us jet-can robbers make any money? We'd have to get a legitimate source of income! The horror!

Pity you can't use tractors on someone else's can. Keep moving the cans away from their covetors so the bot doesn't get the full can indicator and keeps trying to move ore to the can that's out of reach but still has the window on the screen. Full hold, no lasers working and the bot keeps trying to move it to the can. That would be a laugh. Owner finally takes a look to see they've mined practically nothing all day.
