Three thumbs up out of two - Yule Lads are a happening thang. Play-acting CCP minions re-invented as goofy hapless scafes really worked for me. Beyond hilarious! I found myself looking forward to revealing what nightly trinkets were to be had at zero hour - that added to the seasonal entertainment value for the entire week and a half. The trinkets were great - varied, creative, interesting, and something for everybody. Who wasn't wondering what the denouement would bring, and what's there about the Leopard not to like? The movie was play-it-more-than-once genuinely clever, fun, and even memorable.
The whole schtick got me interested enough to find out that the whole Yule Lads thing is very much an actual, very real Icelandic holiday ritual. Fantasy firmly rooted in actual age-old tradition - a decided plus which added even more to the enjoyment factor.

i kinda feel left out though. if you only login and play without checking a website or youtube you never new anything was happening.
no presents either i guess, oh no thats wrong, i redeemed 2 certificates (if they are related at all to this).
i liked snowballs the best, at least they where funny and of no consequence for all (till they let them melt...)
p.s. i like the idea behind the lads, but the implementation was lacking as always. Most ppl only login, they never check a website. |

Giving everyone a shuttle that warps at 20 au/second was a bold move. It was especially interesting to watch the contract prices increase, rather than fall. I honestly wonder how many will be left at the end of the month. That moment when you realize the crazy lady with all the cats was right... |

Well, one minor suggestion would be to have the news item be permanently on the launcher, rather than cycle with stuff like the sale on the collector's edition (rage about having gotten it at full price aside, it's not doing much to catch the eye of those who only have the launcher up long enough to enter their password). |

Although fashion items certainly looked "holiday" enough, perhaps specialty "holiday only" fashion items instead of ones that already exist. I learned things from the synth booster - didn't know that it was permissible in hisec. Now I'm researching boosters and taking them more seriously.
Holiday gift-giving is tailor made for collectibles, so fedo was a hit, not to mention the Leopard. Some people apparently missed the entire event, and I just learned that it was rolled out last year as well. I wasn't aware that it was, but some of that may have been "on me" - I was overseas a lot last year. Still, it pays to advertise. There's real reasons why your Eve character doesn't do /dance. |

Lots of effort went into this (that part is obvious). It is just a shame that such a sexy model is wasted on a shuttle. I would love to mount some lasers on it and fly it into null looking for a place to set up my "Deathstar POS" |

Was an awesome way of celebrating the season. I thoroughly enjoyed it as well. If I had to pick anything that could have been done better would be some way (and I'll be honest in saying I don't have any ideas) of making it less a chore to get to the point of being able to claim the gift.
Felt a little like getting that really big gift under the tree and then finding out your pop quadruple wrapped the box with duct tape every other layer, that contained another wrapped box, that contained yet another wrapped box, etc etc, just for his own amusement. (Made worse by becoming like a regular, yearly tradition growing up... ) |

Someone mentioned that redeeming presents is a bit of a hassle, but I think that's necessary: you don't want to end up with your presents appearing in station the next time you log in in a jump clone or alt in some godforsaken corner of the universe. It's better you can control where the stuff is showing up and which of your characters are getting them.

Oddly enough, I don't know a single person that was impressed by the gifts, or the ******** redeeming system that requires you to log into your management page, just to place the items in your redeeming cue. Most people didn't even bother to waste the time to redeem.
And CCP Alts ftw?

What do you expect getting 50x Warrior I as a gift? The point was not in the content of the gift, but the sharing of culture and seeing the people creating the game you play having fun, enjoying their job, and showing a sense of humor.
Thank you CCP for a holiday tradition EVERYONE can enjoy. It's nice to see a holiday event that doesn't bring out the "black santa" and "anti-Semite" scream-teams.

In my opinion the Yule Lads were quite visible this year, especially when opening the in-game browser.
The only thing I can think of to help inform all players is maybe send an Eve Mail message in game to all subscribed accounts. The message from CCP could notify players about the Yule Lads Advent Calender as well as extend Season Greetings to all.
Anyway, here's my list of gifts from the 13 Yule Lads :
Quote:Dec 12th = 1x Festival Launcher, 100x Snowball, 12x Long-limb Roes
Dec 13th = 1x Prototype Cloaking Device I
Dec 14th = 1x Fedo
Dec 15th = 50x Warrior I
Dec 16th = 2x Warp Core Stabilizer II
Dec 17th = 1x Synth Drop Booster
Dec 18th = 6x 150mm Light Carbine Repeating Cannon I
Dec 19th = 1x Poteque 'Prospector' Astrometric Rangefinding AR-802
Dec 20th = 1x Miner II
Dec 21st = 1x Prototype Cloaking Device I
Dec 22nd = 1x Womens Structure Dress (black/white), 1x Mens Esquire Coat (red/gold)
Dec 23rd = 1x Small Tractor Beam I
Dec 24th = 1x Leopard, 100x Snowball Thank you very much for all of the gifts. As game providers doing this each year is definitely above and beyond the call of duty. In the past I've always looked forward to this tradition and I hope it continues for years to come.
In keeping with the Christmas Spirit it was nice to get the Festival Launcher and Snowballs.
Now I've seen a lot of strange items in my +5 years playing this game, especially while completing all of the Cosmos Agents for the 4 main Empire Factions. I honestly must admit that I don't remember ever seeing a Fedo before. That gift alone will probably end up being more valuable to me than all of the other gifts combined.
Seasons Greetings to all of you at CCP. I hope you and your families all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

If you guys want to provide ideas, constructive criticism, and suchlike, please feel free to do so in this thread and we'll take a look over it! Also, Happy Holidays, and all the best for 2014!
As I'd said in my other thread... if we're going to get gifts, at all, make them avatar items. This will eventually keep the Gimmie-Gimmie Clan from banging on garbage cans all through GD, multiple times a year, crying about how you guys are failing to cater to their sensitive spoiled bratty feelings. I'm even willing to submit a bucket of sketchbook designs, free of charge, without being employed by CCP. I won't ask for a thing in return. Not even my obligatory begging for access to Jove technology.
Partly because I don't want to hear the whining anymore, but also because we don't have enough clothes and accessories for our space barbies.
Honestly, though... the whole Yule Lad thing was cool. I learned about another culture's traditions, and that was gift enough. I didn't even have to recieve anything along with the snippets of the story I got, every day. That moment when you realize the crazy lady with all the cats was right... |

I really appreciated the gifts.
The only thing might have been to tie it into something in-game (mission? exploration? ..?)
Simply getting presents is nice, but it is also to interact with the lads in-game would also have been great. |

First let me say that the Yule Lads thing amounted to a "nativity calendar". My GF used to love those things as a kid, and she was more interested in the Yule Lads than I was. Funny thing is, she does not play the game, so each day I had to explain these gifts and what they were for. So for entertainment value alone, it was well done.
That these items might be deemed "junk" or perhaps some would say that the market was upset by these gifts, it appears these are minor issues overall. It's free stuff, and nobody is getting anything so substantial that anybody's precious balances are being tipped. So what was to lose? Nothing in my opinion.
I expected Dairy Products and a Tractor beam from Skyr Gobbler but called it wrong though.
As for what could be done in the future - it's hard to consider. I have played another MMO where they would have all sorts of holiday content that went way too far into breaking the storyline and seeming a bit commercial or campy. The Yule Lads had that "Iceland style" to it and was not so mainstream either - I liked it. I even learned what Skyr is and as a hobby cheesemaker myself will be adding Skyr to my list.
improvements?
I would look into what Commander A9 did on the 22nd regarding a snowball fight live event (which I could not attend, much regrettably). Letting players do this and providing a little bit of support seems to fit well in the spirit of the game and at the same time, the festive spirit of the season.
Next year I will be looking forward to seeing the Yule Lads again and maybe we'll all get a chance to blow uo their ships too. I'm kinda feeling a need to avenge what they did to Santa Claus. Me and Santa go way back you see, coal is a valuable commodity and I was always happy to get some. |

Thanks for all the effort you guys (and gals) put into the giveaway this year. The Yule lads were fun and festive. Every year the holiday keeps improving. Thanks for the gifts, they are well appreciated. Having to login to the account managent every day to get your gift makes you work just a little bit for it, just like EVE :)
The shuttle is a unique gift with excellent "special" abilities but i fear it will unfortunately get very little actual use by most players due to its having a big red GANK target put on it for the time being. But it can sit alongside my crystal ball, elite hull tanking certificate and Fedo for the moment :)

Making us login and click each day (or all at once) ostensibly to promote the Yule Lads is akin to forced reading. For a gift, this seems silly. I can honestly say I didn't read anything about the Yule Lads, and people interested in that stuff would have read it regardless if it was the gateway to a gift or not, just as people who did not want to read it, did not.
I am OCD, so I claimed all of it, but tbh, the only thing worth claiming was the shuttle, and that was only marginally useful because it's a shuttle.
Could have really made use of a remap. Or another set of Genolutions. Or something like the Gnosis, which is a ship that people actually fly.
A super fast shuttle is like getting socks and underwear. Technically it is a gift, but no one is really impressed by it. No blues. Kill everything.

Amhra Rho wrote:Three thumbs up out of two - Yule Lads are a happening thang. Bravo. Well done. Do it again in 2014. Thanks for the effort that went into this CCP. If you do this again next year, maybe certain people won't whine knowing some mundane stuff will be sprinkled in with some really cool stuff. Loved the Leopard. Had my indy alt take it out soon as it was redeemed and made a 20 jump round trip to "home" and back to where he's salvaging my missions. Timed on my cell phone stopwatch he took 10 min 12 seconds to undock, touch home station, and get back. Extreme agility. Veeery Cool. "Just a shuttle" indeed. And I do have a couple uses for it.. And as for the mundane stuff - some stuff I will use, other stuff will be melted down to make stuff I'll use. That simple. Thanks for everything. Oh, by the way.....can you guys come out with a recipe book next year for how to cook fedo? |

The gift thing succeeded more its surprise factor than necessarily by its actual content. Some days, at least. I had just bought a bunch of t2 mining laser upgrades, for instance, the same day I was gifted a bunch of them. No big deal - what was more than worthwhile was anticipating all day to see what was hiding under that button.

As a new player I want to say -- thank you for the presents CCP! I really liked the way you wrapped them inside of an Icelandic tradition.
I don't get some of the negative naysayers that have posted. Please feel sympathy for them as maybe they have a hard time feeling happy this time of year.
If you want a couple of constructive suggestions - it would be nice if the gifts were introduced on the launcher screen and then automatically posted into redeem items (maybe the coding precludes that). I really appreciated getting the items like boosters and implants that introduce something new to the game for me. And also like the fun items like snowballs, livestock and clothing in the mix. Leopard is awesome. I was a bit puzzled by things like the Miner II as I didn't see how they would introduce a new feature of the game or be useful to anyone who had already completed the tutorials.
Merry Christmas & I hope you have a productive and successful 2014 with Eve Online.

This was a great little extra. I loved the effort that went into it. Especially the video, the sound as Santa exploded made me chuckle! People seem to be taking the gifts part far too seriously, it wasn't about the gifts (Leopard aside) it was a bit of fun and a bit of cultural experience. Also, the redeeming system didn't seem that big of a deal, about 4 mouse clicks is hardly a hassle.
On the whole I enjoyed it, well done CCP |

I see your point, but it's so much easier to change and deploy a website than the Eve client with a calender feature built in. Was there a link in the launcher? I don't remember.
However I enjoyed the calender and am looking forward to xmas 2014.
