I'm a newb, and I'm trying to decide if I should outfit my Tristan w Blasters or Rails. I've checked out the stats and read the sticky posts on Tristan setups, but I was wondering if someone could explain why blasters seem to be more popular than rails for the frigates.
I'll be doing mostly PvE for the time being. Rat hunting esp.
Thanks!

Railguns have long optimal range, lower damage, and poor tracking at close range. Blasters have short optimal range, higher damage, and better tracking at close range.
Usually, railguns are used at longer range with a lesser tank, and stay out of range to avoid taking damage. blasters are used up close, with a better tank, and use the tracking advantage to avoid some incoming damage.
You might want to try both, and consider the playstyle you prefer. Do not mix blasters and railguns, as half your setup with be uneffective all the time. A better option is to use only one turret type, and fit the rest of your ship to help you stay at your optimal range, and not at the optimal range of the enemy.
Sincerly Yours, The Naughty Boy.

Naughty Boy speaks the truth (as usual). I prefer blasters but that's just me. Go with what feels right. ---- I <3 Taranis

Cool, thanks, thats a good explanation.
Is there a place that has a listing for what all the abbreviations are for modules? I have figured out most of them, but in that ship fitting sticky, all the listings are in a cryptic (for fellow noobs at least) greek as far as what the things are.
this game is so freakin' awesome.
thanks again guys.

I'm using a Tristan for hunting low level npcs in .6 space and up and found the railguns are more effective than blasters against these small ships. Blasters have pretty short range, and the way the npc frigates move, I found myself missing them a lot because they were out of range. I now use 2 125 mm rails and a general light missle launcher and found I can easily keep shots hitting in the 10-12k range instead of missing 3-5 shots with blasters as the targets moved away from me so fast.

I now have:
1 125 rail 1 150 rail 1 Limos Launcher 1 Standard Launcher.
Armor repair
I think I'll ditch the standard missle launcher since it takes up the last bit o' the Power Grid.
And maybe trade out the 150 for another 125, I just really like the range on it better, but thats what the launchers are for.
I could also put rockets there instead of the standard launch.
Oh ****, it just goes on and on...
Maybe I will put some NOS on it or sunfink. We'll see. I like the Tristan already tho.

If you go with rockets, fit blasters :)
Rockets = short range, so suit a blaster mix. Standards = long range, so suit a rails mix.
You can cover all ranges with your blasters and rails so long as you fit them correctly. Dont be afraid of changing ammo mid fight. :) It may seem stupid to stop firing and then wait 10 seconds for each gun to reload a different type of round, but if your using 125 rails and sitting at 2km from the guy firing iron at him, your going to be missing him most of the time, and hitting him for pitiful damage. Where as take 10 seconds to change ammo to antimatter, constant hits, and the hardest hits you can do with it :) ----- Memorable Quotes <Jarltan Dimtras> OH MY GOD MY GF IS A DUDE |

That seems to make sense.
I'll keep the rails/standard combo for now. I've played with the ammo a little, but is there a general rule?
Like a short range high damage, a medium range medium damage and a long range, light damage? Or do some ammo types defy that basic premise? I can look at the specs, bu I don't have the experience to know how it all works out in battle yet.
Thanks again for answering my questions.

Iron: Low Damage/High Range Antimatter: High Damage/Low Range
If you look at the range modifiers the more of a bonus to range you get, the lower the damage it will do (generally). ---- I <3 Taranis
