After wanting a upgrade on graphics, and trying to save some money, I bought a PNY 6600 with 256 megs of ram. My old card was a 5700 ultra ddr2 128meg. I never had graphic problems with Eve with my old card, but after installing this 6600, newest drivers from Nvidia, newest chipset driver for nforce2, after about 30 mins of play, my screen will go black, then come back up, but with currupted graphics. Sometimes I can see the background, but no UI, no ship, alot of tearing, streaking effects, and can still hear the game noice, music, effects sounds. I can't move the view, can't see my mouse. I have to ctrl-alt-del out of eve to the task manager to close eve. When I try to log back on, the log in screen is corrupted as well. Only thing that fixes this is a reboot, then it happens again. I've seen this type of corruption before on a laptop with a graphics card that is listed on the "not supported" list on the web site, so im wondering if maybe eve has a problem with this card. I thought maybe it was a psu issue, so I just bought a new Antec 480w dual rail with 17amps on both rails, and that didn't help. I can't see if the card is overheating because the 6600 has the temp reading ability disabiled in its bios, which can be fixed by flashing the bios, but if you screw up, you card is screwed. Newest driver might be the problem. Try version: 6.14.0010.7772
I use it with no problems on my 6600 _____________________________________

nope, wasn't the driver. Card will not except anything under version 71.xx, and even then it still does it. Favorite saying on TS: This "phoon of Doom" is very easy to kill things with. They die very fast. <---JaegerX

did u try other games which uses an big processign amou8nt of your grfx card? I wouldn't be suprised if ur card is damage. I had same problems with my Geforce 6800GT 256mb. After I send it back guarantee-repair, all is ok now.

I have been having major problems with my 6600GT.
The thing that helped me and fixed all problems was that I took the latest ForceWare driver and took the RivaTurner also. I tried multiple tunes in RivaTurner and found that setting FastWrite to disabled, AGP to 4x and clocked the core clock to same in 3d and 2d. Dunno which one of these did do the trick, but atm I am one happy camper.
I hope this helps some. Also look help from NVidia forums, there is lots of discussion about the problems with 6600 series.

Unless the inside of your box is oven-like, methinks you have a defective card.
I have the exact same card and it works wonderfully w/latest driver.
Maybe try stress testing it w/something like 3D Mark or Serious Sam 2.
Don't mess w/the BIOS unless you're ready to eat the card as I doubt you can exchange a modded one. ------------------------------------------------- Ralph Wiggum says, "Fire feels like wind". |

Edited by: Faishter on 13/03/2006 18:16:57 The 6600 series is drouple some. Check the 12k replies thread at NVidia forums about fixing 6600 issues. E.g. 6600 series has major problems with VIA and SIS chip motherboards. Some might never get any problems with their 6600 and VIA or SIS motherboard, some will get hell. It might be heat problem for sure, but check the NVidia forums about 6600 problems&fixes, you might find your fix there.
Try also what I (Koh Sun) suggested, helped for me.

i'm having a similar problem with a 6600gt. it worked fine for months then last week one day i clicked the market icon and my screen went blank. upon restart i've got a corrupted client and it's so bad it's unplayable. GM's have suggested downgrading my driver and updating my sound drivers but to no avail. changing the anti-aliasing options seems to change the shape and size of the glitches but doesn't seem to get rid of any of them.
just weird how it just happened one day. i tried playing the movies and it runs just fine. still working on it so i'll let you know if i get a result, it's starting to drive me mad.

I've had a lot of problems with my 6600.
Constant blue screens because of a graphics loop error, or general corruption of graphics if it didn't quite get to rebooting itself.
Currently testing a beta patch to fix this issue... if it works I'll let you know.
Or if you want to give it a go, you can look HERE

I had the same problem: It is not the driver, the card itself is wrecked. I brought it back and bought a 6800 for some euros more, it works fine. I had done intense testing with the 6600 and it came out that it was definitly NOT the driver, nor any other software. It actually started slowly, not noticable in the beginning and then the streaks and artefacts got more and more. They apparently were inherent to OBJECTS and changed when the scene was reloaded into gfxcard memory. Though this is only my interpretation I tried with 4 driver packs, from teh very oldest detonator to the recent upto date forceware 81.95... all showed the same problem. I noticed a quite hot GPU on the 6600... but only speculation if that is what crashed it as it would be a strange failure to show spikes only.
Get your card back and buy the 6800 if you can. Have a nice day though... :-(

It WAS in all games, dude. I only noticed it first time in battlefield 2, where I thought it was a driver issue. Then I noticed that every other game that made use of 3D hardware acceleration had exactly the same problem, some more some almost unnoticable. But all had in common that the errors grew more or different during playing and if changing scenes.
Note that it must not be inherent to the design, most probably its a quality issue.
