I've had my eye on the Nyx ever since I read about it in the eve books, but everyone in my corp advises me not to. Why not? I know there are a lot of requirements but what's wrong with it? |

Because a Nyx is a super carrier, thus it cannot dock, jump through gates, or deploy normal drones. It also costs a cool 20bill I wear my goggles at night.

You would have a second character with the bare minimum of skills to sit in the Nyx (called a "holding char") and switch to that when you want to fly something else with your main. OR you can leave the Nyx in a CSAA (Capital Ship Assembly Array) at a POS. Or you could just leave it at one of your POSes so long as no one else has the password.
Do be aware however that once people realize you have a supercarrier or a titan, people tend to add you to their watchlist, use locator agents to find you, etc. Supers are also fairly slow to align and warp, and yet they can be scanned almost instantly. I had a friend who was scanned out the moment he logged in, and was bumped before he could complete his "emergency warp" back to a "safe spot" until a hictor showed up and bubbled/put an infinite point on him. I believe that this is an exploit now, but it has happened. People will go to great lengths for a super kill. |

it is in deed an exploit now.
Also op supers takes a LOT of Skill Points to fly. im approaching 60million SP on Lady and I cant even fly a regular capital ship much less a super, sure if you just make a beeline for a super you can make it in a year or so of dedicated training but then your char is stuck with only being able to fly that ship. and then how will you make money and even pvp most of the time? As apart from Pandemic Legion most of us dont drop supers all that often.

Most supercarriers are driven by chars which never leave the ship - so there's little point NOT beelining a super. |

I would say it is more like painting a huge target on your back and would suggest waiting until you have experience using a normalcarrier first. To at least understand the basics and then image being unable to dock. Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if your in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. If I had a high confidence that you posessed a Nyx, I would add you to my contacts watchlist so that I know whenever you log in. And perhaps I'd try and sniff out your general location. And then I'd nail down exactly where your Nyx is held. And then I'd see about setting up a trap.
As a rough analogy, supers are about as fun, gameplay-wise, as caretaking a spouse, kids and a mortgage. I'm sure it has it's occasional moments, but you're opening a rather significant can of worms, in terms of how your playtime is affected. For this reason there are characters, and then there are super-characters. One of them gets logged in, and used as a main. The other tends to stay offline except for during alliance operations.
If you're still not totally dissuaded, consider buying a supercap character instead of utilizing your main.

For all the above reasons, if you want to play with a big drone-y ship, just use a Thanatos instead. You lose the fighter bombers, but you gain:
- Regular drones
- Ability to dock (and thus survive without a POS)
- Several billion ISK less in cost
- Less attention from people wanting to kill you
- Your corp's support (most likely). A carrier is almost always an asset. A supercarrier is a responsibility and possible liability.

1. Learn about capitals first before you train for them.
2. Nyx is a super carrier which means:
2.1 It can't dock 2.2 It has a very very limited use 2.3 It needs a LOT of backup otherwise it's just a fancy lossmail. Want to have some chat in game? Need help to get into the game as a new player? Just join my channel: Crazy Dutch Guy |

That-¦s the point...you don-¦t switch ships.
Or you train up a 2nd character on a 2nd account to be a Nyx holding character, and keep it logged off unless you really need the Nyx. Want to have some chat in game? Need help to get into the game as a new player? Just join my channel: Crazy Dutch Guy |

Also bear in mind that you can't just buy one off the market. Since they can't dock, they can't be sold on market or contracts. They can only be built by sov-holding corps in nullsec. Plus, of course, you need a cyno alt or someone you really, really, really trust. |

Exactly.
For a normal capital...friends will do.
For supers...I would seriously doubt about just friends, the list you trust should be really really small. Want to have some chat in game? Need help to get into the game as a new player? Just join my channel: Crazy Dutch Guy |

Yes, and regardless of corporation or alliance. You see the chance of tackling a supercarrier brings out the scoundrel in most people. Your ship will be bumped by your own team-mates out of a POS. Or the POS password will be given to the enemy. Or someone will trick you to jumping to a cyno where a hictor is waiting to tackle and hold you, or someone will somehow try to scam you out of your super. Or someone will squad/wing/fleet warp you on top of the enemy. Etc.
If you're going to have a supercarrier you a) must have somewhere quiet to park it (where you OWN the damned POS and you alone have the password and anchoring/unanchoring roles. You need a back-up POS too that's even MORE secret than the first one so you can park your super while looking for a new POS because it got compromised. And you need to be able to light cynos for yourself with another account. Only THEN do you have the bare minimum to own a Nyx and survive till your first fight. |

Long story short, destroying a supercap give lots of internet points. Most people will do anything for such big ammount of internet points as it is worth much more than internet friendship.
That and the fact that supercapital are extremely unpractical to uses alone (and have pretty much no use except shooting capitals) and rely on mechanic that makes you rely on other to do anything. |
