I've been "playing" Eve for 6 days now. I have playing in quoted because this is how my first few days have gone and a lot of it has been just logging on long enough to train a skill before I go to work:
Made my first character did the tutorial and some missions. Got an implant as a drop at the end of one of the mission strings. Sold the implant. Found out that my WoW guildie is a Gallentine not a Caldari. Rolled a Gallentine and sent him the money from the old guy. Deleted the old character. Finally got the new guy trained up to use a destroyer (a Gallentine destroyer I can't recall the name of). Stuck a couple blasters and a few mining lasers on it. Made a little ISK but still haven't finished the tutorial on the new guy.
Right now I'm just grinding out the skills to get a cruiser and have enough money to buy that cruiser (I've got 5+ days of training before I can train Cruisers 1). Tonight I saw the forum here and read the article on the best way to make a character but 77 days is a bit much to do in setup when you only have 30 days to decide whether the game is worth it. Also I don't the millions of credits to be able to get the skill books.
Any recommendations on things to try/do so I can get a better feel for the game so I can decide whether I should keep playing? Right now I am impressed by the fact that you do actually have to use your brain in this game compared to WoW but it seems like I've been dropped into space, given a ship, and told to go. Not where to go mind you just that I need to go.
One more thing. I need to thank Lucy for answering my questions on the rookie channel. Having been on her end in answering noob questions in WoW I'm glad that she was there to help.

Cool, stick at it. BTW The Gallente Destroyer you have is called a Catalyst, to reduce skill training time buy and train the learning skills, and you may want to put 8x 125mm Railguns on that thing, and your starsign is Scorpio. BEHOLD, I AM PSYCHIC. ----------------------------------------------- Guys, we win some and we lose some, but please, can we win this one? THIS SIG R UNHACKABLE

You don't need to be the same race as your friend. Even if you're a Caldari, you can train up Gallente ships if you want them.

Don't bother training up the advanced learning skills, or even the regular learning skills past level 3 or so. Just get to what you need ASAP and start having fun.

Try the player guide. Try some kill missions, try some complexes. Try joining a corp.
Welcome, and have fun with EVE. You will never go back to that hell of WoW

Read the forums. There is a ton of good info there. I have cameback to this game after 2 year break and are enjoying it morer now than before. Just stick with it for the 30 days and decide then if you like it. Also get with a corp. Soloing is never much fun but a good corp will take you in and teach you the basics and also help you along etc...

Everyone feels like this when they start. Imagine 3 years ago when there were NO guides and the tutorial was rubbish. We just had to get on with it. You will learn a lot by joining a player corporation early on, by speaking to people in the help channel, and by reading the forums and guides.
Key to this game is working out what you want to do and going for it. And, initially, you can make more money trading than mining so dont feel that you have to be like the 70000 other newbies who start mining from the off and keep doing that for 2 years solid. .

You may have docked at some stations in your journey through space. There are player corporations that build such stations in deep space. EVE is not about getting skills up or have the biggest e-*beep*. Skills are tools to use other tools witch are used to achieve goals. Go out and seek a corp that is building up something or takeing it away from others. Join them and learn how to play the game from players that acutally play it.

Once upon a time sooo many years ago this character was born. My first few days was not even close to being similar. I've said it before I'll say it again You got it easy nowadays.
Regarding the skills and which to train when... I would say train up so you can enjoy the game but keep the learning skills in mind cuz they do make a difference.
With the "power of two" offer I got my self a second acc, that character will turn 2 weeks old on friday. She has the skills to fly haulers, destroyers and whatever frigs. I am now concentrating on the learning skills and while I do that I can do most things like mine, agent whoring or haul stuff. But that char was created to be a compliment to Kane so there wont be much fun skills on it.. _______________________________________________

Welcome to EVE!
One thing that stuck out was the bit about making the "best" character. To be honest, there is no such thing, since every character can go anywhere and do anything, given time and skills. This isn't WoW, where you might make an axe wielding dwarf but then wish you could use magic too. Here, you could do both.
Set your own goal and try to achieve it. Along the way you'll discover all sorts of depth to this game that will give you other things to strive for. It's that open-endedness that makes this game great.

just play the game have a laugh and dont be afrade to ask questions :D
and stay away from norty areas till u actualy are willing to get blown up that means anything that isnt green or blue dot on the auto flye-me-jig |

Yes, this is not a hold your hand type game like WoW. No one tells you do this, ok, now you can go to this area and do that, ect. Eve is a world, and you make your place, not the other way around.
