I was watching Scott Manley building a comm relay system in Kerbal Space Program, and then I got to thinking about the debate over local in nullsec, and I had a bit of an idea.
CCP has hinted that we will soon be able to build jumpgates to a brand new region of space. If we think of this as a kind of mixture between wormhole space and null-sec space, a place that offers true freedom, and also the ability to build an empire, then the construction and destruction of infrastructure should play a key role.
So how about introducing deployable communication satellites that support local? Your corporation moves into a new area of space, you deploy comm sats so you can track movement in and out of your new domain. Prior to the deployment of said satellites, local acts like it does in wormhole. With the satellites operational, normal space style local is enabled in the system. Now imagine an enemy strikes right after downtime and is able to bring down the comm sats and move an unknown number of hostile assets into your space. Now you have to choose wether to engage a potentially superior force, ditch the system, or redeploy and protect a new set of satellites to get better intel.
It's a very vague idea I admit, I have no idea whether these would be tied to some sort of sovereignty, or simply deployed by a corpration like a POS. I imagine they would be deployed near each gate, with perhaps a central, tankier communication relay station. The satellites would be rather fragile, and would have short anchoring times, and a minimal reinforce timer, while the central hub would take longer to deploy and would be roughly as resilient as a large POS. Perhaps every ship in system would show up in local so long as one satellite remains, or maybe only players that enter space within a certain number of AUs around a satellite show up. This later option would be more technically complex, but could introduce a strategic element of trying to place a cyno ship outside of the range of nearby satellites.
Anyway, that's the idea I had, and I don't remember seeing anything along the same track discussed, so I'd like to hear your thoughts on it! |
