There have been discussions about this before but I'm bringing it up again. A friend of mine was in a hauler and was transporting 700 BPs worth over a billion isk. He was ganked at a gate in .5 by two guys, one in a BS and a hauler. The BS killed him (then got killed by Concord) and his buddy picked up the loot can. Slimey tactics for peeps who are too damn lazy to do their own work.
Whether he was smart or foolish for transporting so many BPs without an escort is imo irrelevant. The point I want to make here is if CCP intends to let this kind of nonsense go on in "secure" space then players should at least have the option to insure their cargo.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.
Use a stronger ship. Stack those 700 BPs in a BS or BC for christ's sake. Gank ships are going to have a really hard time breaking through 12-15k(hardened) shields before CONCORD inst-pwns them.
An Escort wouldn't have mattered, but he is a fool for using such a fragile ship instead of something faster/stronger.

u have actually almost answered your own questions here.
firstly he was foolish transporting such a valuable acrgo in a tech1 hauler with no escort, its far from irrelevant.
secondly 0.5 is NOT secure space. it is higher security than low sec that does not mean it is secure. -

Here we go again..
There is no secure space. The Security Status system should be seem as a guideline, not an absolute. It is the same as the DED Deadspace Complex rating.
Jita for example is statistically the most dangerous system in EVE.

Why were you transporting billions worth of BPs in a hauler when an interceptor could have handled them just fine, and are essentially immune to this empire gank tactic? there is insurance for cargo... it's called activating brain before transporting 1 bil in cargo. after said activation you decide on a good means of transportation... if activating brain went correctly "tech 1 hauler" will not be your decision. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Quote: in a hauler and was transporting 700 BPs worth over a billion isk.
is the problem.
simply... why? why was that being carried in a hauler?
700 BP's takes up less than 10m3 of cargo space.
I'm no pirate or even PvPer myself. but there is no excuse for stuff like that to happen. within high sec, an inty, or probably MWD'ing normal frig, could get to where it was going, before it could be locked and hit by an agressor. a BS could definitely survive long enough for concord to dispatch the agressor. a tanked cruiser may even be sufficient.
yeah its not nice. ... but your friend could have prevented it from happening with almost absolute certainty.

Yup, it's plain wrong to haul THAT valuable a cargo in THAT vulnerable a ship whith no precautions taken whatsoever. Dangle your bits in a blender, and sure enough, someone will press the "on" switch for you.

No where in EVE is it safe, Empires are marhsalled by Navies and Concord, they interven if sec of system is high enough, or if a player with a very bad standing tries to enter....On a side note, carrying BPO's well worth 1BN in a hauler, it screams to the heavens for someone to to grab it from you and sell it. EVE can be harsh sometimes, live and learn, ill bet you next time you will be carrying it in BS.

I'm almost afrid to go look in the other forums. I'm afraid I'll find a post about someone being so stupid as to haul that much inventory in an eggshell ship.
Hell. Your buddy could have at LEAST put it into an escrow courier mission so it was hidden. they probobly scanned him, started giggleing and blew his ship.

There is no 'secure' space as you choose to interpret it. There never was meant to be secure space as you choose to interpret it.
What there is, is space in which the insecurity is less then elsewhere. Space where the risks are lower then elsewhere. But there is no, adn never will be, riskless space.
You friend was indeed stupid for hauling all that in one go if it meant so much to him. Cargo insurance is not neccesary, and would break far mroe then it would do good. (imo, it actually would do no good at all).

This has been said before but I'm going to say it again.
Originally by: The Player Guide Don't expect CONCORD to keep you immune to attacks or ship losses. Like in the real world, law enforcers often arrive too late at the scene of the crime, and even though they able to punish the criminal, they can't always prevent the crime.
I can't help but wonder at your friends sanity for hauling such a large amount in such a fragile ship.
Escorts is meaningless. There isn't an awful lot they can do in high-sec anyway. The only useful 'escorts' in this insatnce would have been a suicide squad of your own to take out the pirate hauler, then it just becomes a race to see who runs out of ships first.

Someoone said it nicely in the last thread on this topic.
Even in a heavily policed are someone can still mug you.
OR
London is meant to be safe. You still see armoured vans transporting cash though don't you?

This is a legitimate tactic. And as such, can bee seen as wrong by a victim. However, the agressor lost something in the process, ship destroyed by CONCORD, and in a way paid for it.
Do not transport High End stuff in industrials. especially BPOs and BPC when they can fit into an Interceptor.
Sorry for your loss.

even a T1 frigate would have worked, odds are they wouldnt even cargo scan a non hauler. use a common mission runner/belt NPCer ship and probally wouldnt even turn a head. Kestrel or Caracal come to mind if in Caldari space.

That is close to the normal saying of "Plan for the worst, hope for the best." Like what everyone else has said, use a stronger ship, something that would take them a few ships to take down (battleship, freighter, tanked cruiser) or small fast ships. Hey, aren't shuttles 500m/s and one of, if not the most agile ships in the game? There ya go, you have your hauler for bps.

Keep transporting billions in T1 paper thin haulers. There are no pirates in hi-sec! You are completely safe!

I do ratting/mission running, occasional mining, some may (and will) call me a carebear , but what are you complaining about? This is the beauty of EvE: the fact that it is so open ended and life-like. Are you gonna be walking around the city with a bag full of diamonds/cash/whatever-else-really-expensive all alone?
Most likely not. And even if you would, you would definatelly not go into a dark alley (0.5) with that. Now, even in the middle of a busy street, in some place, like outside a bank or something, what can stop someone else from pointing a pistol at you and shooting you? Absolutely nothing. Of course, the police and guards will quickly apprehend him, but in the comotion that follows, what stops the "killer" from grabbing some of those diamonds and slipping them to his friend that would play the role of an "innocent bystander"? Absolutely nothing. And with today's laws, the killer will be out of jail in a few years, and live happily ever after with the money him and his friend split.
The fact that EVE universe allows for the possibility of this happening, just like such a possibility exists in real life, is what makes this game great. Whoever said that 0.5 or even 1.0 was safe?
It is safeER, not safe. Police are there and do their job just right, just like the real police in RL. But just like in RL you are not "safe" anywhere, you are not safe anywhere in EVE.
"Slimey tactics for peeps who are too damn lazy to do their own work." Well, in this case, it is your friend that was too damn lazy and overconfident not to get escort and setup the ship accordingly. Overconfidence and not realizing that even 1.0 is merely safeer, not safe is what killed your friend.
You are right, whether he "was smart of foolish for transporting with escort" is irrelevant. But there is no "nonsence" here, as there is no place in EVE that is "secure"
And this what makes this game such an adrenalin rush. Thank you CCP.

Why do you people continue to risk ultra high value cargo in such weak vessels?
BPs take up no cargo space. You could use a shuttle for god's sake!
