This guy is either incredibly brave, or just a little touched in the head. Either way, salute to him!
Pomfret councilman sworn in wearing colander
A unique style of headwear was present during newly-seated Pomfret Town Council member Christopher Schaeffer's oath of office Thursday afternoon, but it wasn't intended to keep his head warm.
Schaeffer wore a colander (a strainer typically used to drain water from spaghetti) while Town Clerk Allison Dispense administered the oath of office to him before the board's reorganizational meeting. When the OBSERVER asked afterward why he wore a colander on his head, Schaeffer said he was a minister with an even more unique organization - the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
"It's just a statement about religious freedom," he said. "It's a religion without any dogma."
[i]A dogma is a set of principles laid down by an authority as truth, such as the doctrine of an organized religion. [article continues] |

Not showing a lot of commitment there tbh.
I mean, he's being sworn in and it's a special occasion. You think he would at least wear a stainless steel one.

plastic takes thousands of years to decompose. i think his commitment is beyond contestation. I contest that assertion: Plastic decomposes quite nicely when exposed to uncontrolled environments. Just not as nicely as lesser materials. The Stainless Colander is actually more durable. One might debate, however, whether the metal or plastic version is more ecumenical. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

I'm afraid we might be getting dangerously close to a discussion of dogma* here. Please don't get this thread locked arguing about the religious significance of the materials of the colander.**
*In case anyone doesn't know what that is, the writer of the article provided a handy definition for the reader: "A dogma is a set of principles laid down by an authority as truth, such as the doctrine of an organized religion."
**Also as defined by the article: "colander (a strainer typically used to drain water from spaghetti)" |

On a serious note. If you are going to be forced to take an oath in which 'God' is probably mentioned, and you directly do not believe in 'a God', this is probably one of the most hilarious and yet most appropriate actions. |

That's a good point. And apparently some of the people in that little town didn't get that. Check out some of the comments after the news article-- some citizens were not amused. |

Khergit Deserters wrote:"If he was going to wear a colander during swearing in, he should have also worn while he was campaigning for office." I find that to be a hilarious quote. Why, everyone knows you wear your Sunday-go-to-Meeting best every day of the week! If not, you should NEVER be allowed to wear it!
Ramen knows, that town really needs this guy's example right now.
