been in the game for 1.5 months. I just got a bright shinny new ship a few days ago. I just took care of some rats and then noticed someone had locked on to me. By the way I was being hit, I could tell I was being ganked by someone overclassed. I got to thinking. There is a flaw in this game. The people that signed up lets say 4 months ago all the way to when the game started will always have have higher skills, better ships and better equipment. There is no catching up with them at some point to have a fair encounter.
So lets say 4 months ago there was a total of 95,000 people signed up. That's potentially 95,000 players I will never catch up to and only the players that have signed up in say the same month I signed up will it be a fair pvp fight.
Before I canceled my account I tried to put a bounty on this person with the remaining funds I had. I can't even do that because their standing with concord was good enough.
Oh well.

Edited by: Gericault m0id on 19/03/2006 14:06:50 I won't start on the 'you don't need 35m skill points to be competitive' line because it's been done too many times.
If you've been in the game for a month and a half monthsyou might want to join a player corp. If it's a decent corp they're likely to help you with the revenge bit of it all. My 2 isks.

As an afterthought, a 1.5 month player shouldnt be in .4 or bellow w/o friends and escort.

New players these days get it so easy compared to before and yet they still whine. Let's get one thing straight, skillpoints don't compensate for brains. It's rediculously easy to avoid being killed in low sec, serves you right to be honest.

As previously echoed, your post is inaccurate.
Yes, older players will have more skillpoints, and sometimes more money, which can offer access to more specialized ships.
There is no MMO that does not have this feature. In my experience of most MMOs, character growth is something that developers and players enjoy. As characters progress, they begin to outgrow newer players.
EVE actually has this problem relatively minimized due to incredible ship balance and the variety of roles needed in fleet encounters. Yes in solo PvP there is potential for problems, but escaping is not difficult in this game.
Anyways, it can be frustrating losing large investments. I would advise taking a break for a few days and coming back to see if you enjoy the game.

Edited by: Tos'' Lavoch on 19/03/2006 14:38:41 If anything the Eve skill system is very friendly towards newer players. Each and every skill only has 5 levels, once I reach that level I can't go any higher. It doesn't take long for someone to become just as good as me at firing a laser or hybrid turret.

Perhaps not rediculously easy, but certainly doable, depending on how deep you're in.
TBH I've never been killed in lowsec, and I tend to frequent it quite often.

You "will never catch up"?
1. Every ship has alimit to the number of skill points it can use. Someone might have 40 million skill points, but only 15 million of that will be used when he flies his megathron. And when he flies that frigate, he might only be using 5 million. Specialization is the guy to "catching up".
2. Skill points don't mean **** in real combat. At all. As long as you can use the equipment you need, skill points don't matter. What matters is teamwork and skill.
3. Skill points don't mean **** in terms of making money either.
You got killed in low sec because of your own stupidity. There are tons of ways to avoid pirates, NONE of which involve skill points.
The biggest disadvantage newbies have is their lack of knowledge and experience, not their lack of skill points.
P.S. Look at the recent Oveur dev blog. The average EVE player has about 7 million skill points, not 40 million

I've long been "mildly" in favor of giving new players some sort of "moderate" jump start for their skills.
but only "mildly" in favor of it.
Lots of skills are very nice. Brains and spirit count for vastly more.
Give me a choice between recruiting a raw noob who has superior brains and spirit, or a 30mil skill point "average" player, and I'd recruit the raw noob.

confusing stupidity with inexperience is not right, but you did die because of inexperience. if you had more experience of low sec (or even just the game), you wouldn't have lost
one of my earlier PvP encounters consisted of my caracal against a (badly set up) cyclone. it went well for me - the guy was shield tanking, and i had his shields down before my tank got near breaking. i decided to get closer to him, and ended up inside AC range when he was on hull. i popped SOON(tm). i died because of inexperience. i didn't know he had close range guns. i was about 3 weeks old. best of all... i had a stab, but didn't leave cos i thought i was winning.
you can catch up. When i joined the game, there were players (combat chars, not just uber alts) with well over 20mil SP. now, i wouldn't be scared to fight many of them 1v1, and if i lost, it would be mainly through player skill and setup, not pure SP.
and remember: specialising is the key to victory

I'm going to play a story game here to illustrate a few of the things you can do in your situation.
Scenario: Hi, my name is Bob. I signed up a few months ago and mined my way into a cruiser. A few months down the line, I figured I was ready for low sec and began mining in a 0.3 system on the border of gallente-caldari space. Lo and behold, a player in a battleship comes into the belt and destroys my ship! I didn't expect it because his security rating is positive. He passes me some bull**** roleplaying line about these belts being under the soverignty of his corporation and for their use only. Man, was I ever ****ed.
Bad idea: Go on the forums, complain that the game is unbalanced and you can't compet with older players. Good idea: Check your facts. Check the age of the pilot, tell some people your story and ask for advice from the veterans. Eventually, you learn that he didn't blow you up because he's older than you and you couldn't stand up to him but because of the ship setup and tactics he used. You learn how to counter them (in this case, aligning to a nearby moon to warp, fitting some warp core stabalisers and paying attention) and keep mining right under their noses.
Bad idea: Screw this game, I'm cancelling my account and throwing all my assets away. Pirates are too damn good.. Good idea: Become a pirate. Enough said.. if pirates are too damn good, be one.
Bad idea: Complain that new players can't stand up to old players. Good idea: Realise that "players" is a plural. Get some buddies in mining ships, haulers and combat ships. Start your own corporation and tell those guys claiming the belts where to shove their soverignty. Be prepared for all out war - bring more people than they have :). Alternatively, join their corp or another corp. You want to compete, get in a group. There is a limit to what one player can do.
Bad idea: Complain that they will always have better equipment and ships and you can never take them out. Good idea: Ask people how you can take out a pilot with better ships and equipment. You'll be surprised to learn that a mixed fleet of 5-10 4 month old players with Tech 1 crappy gear in cruisers and frigates can take out that almighty battleship veteran. He'll lose a lot more than you will.
Epilogue: Hi, it's Bob again. A few weeks back I posted a thread about how I was killed by a pirate while mining in a 0.3 system. Man, was I ever annoyed at that. Yesterday, I got into contact with a few of my old mining buddies I used to hang around in Jita with, sucking up veldspar. I told them how good the ore was out here and that we'd have to fight for it and mine togehter for protection. About half of them chickened out but I got 6 people who were interested. Yesterday I was mining on my own in a belt when the battleship shows up again. I had some friends waiting at a nearby moon to warp right to me. Here's the chat log:
Pirate Name Removed > I thought I told you not to mine here, Bob. These belts are soverign territory of the Corp Name Removed empire. Bob (in gang chat) > Go! Pirate Name Removed > This is what you get for mining in my belt. Pirate Name Removed > WTF Pirate Name Removed > Get the $$ú% off me
We had two frigates with warp scramblers and microwarpdrives to keep him from warping out and four cruisers for damage and nossing to drain his capacitor, like someone suggested on the forum. He managed to kill my mining cruiser, of course, but after a few minutes, his tank failed and we took down his Battleship with Tech 2 mods and made a few million from it. Needless to say, he broke his "Role playing" and started swearing at us. Last I heard, he was posting on the forums about how groups of new players are overpowered against veterans with good gear and how he was going to cancel his account.
This belt is ours now.
Bob out. --------------

Bye. It's not our fault you ignored all the goddamn warning signs about low-sec space.
I can't gank any player bigger than a cruiser at the moment. That's why I'm training my skills up. Me and every person in my corporation are good sports about getting hammered. You however, are an absolutely poor sport. Next time, fly an insured ship and don't fly in an area you don't feel confident flying in.

You realise that one of the most feared tactics is a large group of T1 Frigates that are only days old right?
In a 1 vs 1 matchup, yes, you may not be able to beat an experienced player depending on your individual ship setups.
But it's not all about skill points. pardon the vulgarity, but the person with the balls tends to win. Reason beaing they are more willing to go balls to the walls to win. they'll risk their ship, and everything on it to beat you. Where as you just want to survive.
It could be he was SPECIFICALLY set up for PvP. Were you? There is a big differance between a PvE build and a PvP build.
Someone can have 4 times as many skill points as you, but did they focus them on combat, or on spaceship command and Learning like most vets do for the first few months.
if you take a 1 month charactor that had their skills trained up SPECIFICALLY for PvP in a certain ship, they most likely will be able to take out someone with 3x as many skill points.
It's all about how you build the charactors skills, and how your ship is set up and how you fly that ship.
Go to the Crime and Punishment section and look at all the posts on useing trial accounts for combat. Those are all charactors that are less then 14 days old, and they're killing people with months of play under their belts. - -

Now let's talk EverQuest shall we... 1.5months into that game... well.. you won't be capped, and you will be spanked.
On top of that: There's just so many skills to train.
On top of THAT, why should you have more than a snowballs chance in heck when you're a newbie and he/she (he) is a veteran?
ON TOP OF THAT,if you're alone, 70m SP won't always help you when the Goonfleet (Read: a bunch of newbies(no ofeense)) come knocking

every mmorpg game i have played-and thats several,
the newer players are always commplaning that older players have an advantage over them, and its unfair, blah blah blah,
they dont seem to relise that older players have learned by trail and error how to play said games, but they whant every thing now, now, now,
