I just got the skill Caldari Cruisers level 1 and am thinking about turning in my Merlin for an Osprey.
I am an aspiring pirate, and would like to know what my target limits should be with a ship such as this.
At the moment all I am capable of outfitting this ship with is:
Missle Launchers Small Hybrid Turrets Small Extenders Small Boosters Afterburner Warp Scrambler and more low tech type stuff
I assume I should be able to fight most frigates, but I am wondering where my limits would lie with mining ships and frieghters?
Any help would be appreciated.

get a caracal as soon as you can they are much more fun
you should use medium equipment on a ship a cruiser dont fly it till you can do so IMHO its very important you have the skills to fly a ship. I have killed a large number of Rookie players flying around battleships with medium guns and medium armor reps etc

yup get another level in caldari cruiser and get a caracal, fit it with heavy missile launchers (assaults will work too if you've running out of fitting) and go have fun.

Agreed, Caracal ftw, the Osprey has the damage output of a little kid with a BB gun, as it was designed to be a mining ship. Don't rush getting into the next bigger class of ships just because you can, the Merlin can be strong if you have the skills for it.

I'd stick to frigates for now until you can fly cruisers more effectively (after 3 months I still fly frigates more than anything else).
I like the Merlin, but the Kestrel can be devastating against NPCers (especially with frig V for the 50% kinetic missile bonus and in areas where the rats don't deal kinetic damage). I love doing over 40 damage per rocket.

With a ship like that your target should be Roids
Take the advice ... wait the extra 2 hours to train Cruiser 2 and get a Caracel

Very true. Don't forget that battle peformance is fitting>role>size. Don't use ships for what they aren't designed to do... its wasteful. Those Ospreys were designed to fit Miner IIs and pop roids up there just above BSes and the second mining barge. Your caracal, on the other hand, was designed to fit 5 heavy launchers and a decent tank then go after cruiser/battlecruiser rats or fit 5 assaults and pwn frigs. A well fitted frig with a skilled pilot can take down a poorly fitted BS relatively easily (but not quickly).

Osprey might be good in a squad of ospreys with excellent communication. I'd have to look at the potential tanking numbers.. I don't think they'd be very efficient except against single targets, so my optimism is limited. For all I know, with inv. fields, a keystone Osprey could tank a POS. An HAC would do better simply for more hp.
I'd fit artillery or missiles to go with the lone remote shield booster. There are no hybrid bonuses to speak of so you get to use whatever you like.
Either shield extenders would be smart, or EW in the mids and gyrostabs in the lows.
What I think the logistics ships really need is a mod with 30s activation that grants a 6 minute bonus effect (shield/armor/cap/locking) that doesn't stack. That way, a logistics ship can properly support 10 normal ships and more depending on skills and equipment.

IMO for solo PvP, the "limit" for an Osprey should be the line in the station docking area marked "exit" - DO NOT CROSS IT

I used an osprey to probe and get -4 on a Raven at 20km last night. Granted, he blew it away (old leftover noe from small ship days), but it did the job for the megathron to warp to me and get him.
For combat though? No.

Ospreys are very effective PvP ships.
Mainly because everyone assumes they're fit for mining and will attack even if they're in a laughingly weak inty or AF.

I've considered trying out a Belicose with NOS, ewar, and drones. Not that you couldn't do this a lot better with other ships... but it could be fun. At least people would probably engage me at gates/stations... ________________ ~Phelan Lore

I presume you mean a laughingly weak setup on an inty or AF. A fully loaded Ishkur AF would completely pawn an Osprey... the osprey wouldnt even dent the Ishkurs paintwork!
And before you ask, yes....i do love the Ishkur way too much
