Hello guys,
I'm a bit confused about shield compensation skills. My corp told me they are used in situations, when you have invu field fitted but someone neuted you empty and it does not work anymore. Then they give a tiny bonus to resistances. Because of that I was advised to skip them till I have more crucial skills (like mechanics level 5 :P).
Then somewhere on this forums I've read that they do not work this way.
Guys - how do they work? Are they or are they not nearly useless?
Cheers, Thomas |

The passive bonus for active hardeners was removed some time ago. So right now they are just for the passive hardeners. If you have some usecase where you need passive hardeners, well go for it. But then mechanics 5 is a way better skill in almost all situations. |

Example: We used these for C5 and C6 w-space sites (energy neuting means active modules are useless), along with a max skill and mindlinked Siege warfare booster.

There are a few edge cases for them like the one that Tau Cabalander mentioned. Another one would be for a totally passive shield buffer on an afk hauler in hisec.
However for the most part the shield compensation skills just eat your SP. You may want to take them to level 3 or 4 eventually but there are literally over 100 skills that are worth training to 4 or 5 beforehand. |

There are a few cases where an passive hardener with high skills will give you a better sustained tank than a non-deadspace active hardener, due to the cap use of the latter.
They're also useful for afk-autopilot ships. "CCP is changing policy, and has asked that we discontinue the bonus credit program after November 7th. So until then, enjoy a super-bonus of 1B Blink Credit for each 60-day GTC you buy!"

I would have to agree with this. Unless you know ahead of time that you're going to be neuted there is no reason to use passive shield hardeners or train the skills. Before the nerf it actually made sense to train the skills. Thankfully I only wasted training these skills to 5 on one of my pilots.
Now the armor compensation skills are actually worth training because of the EANM |

I would train the skills to 3 so that you have the option of fitting passive hardeners for situations where you expect to suffer neuting (e.g. if you are intending to AWOX a corp and their CEO's pride and joy is a Bhaalgorn, or if you intend to run level 5 missions).
If you find yourself using them often you can then upgrade from 3 to 4 in time, but not many people will do this. 3 is just such a short train that even if you seldom use them it's no real cost. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. EVE's golden rule: Never trust anyone in-game unless you are sleeping with them in real life. Even then, they may only be screwing you to screw you. |
