I don't really consider myself a Pirate... and I'm not really a PvP-er... at least not yet. I love PvP in MMO's and it's usually what I strive for but I just haven't had the skills or credits to support myself in PvP in EVE yet.
Well, last night I decided to head over to some 0.3 areas and see if I could mix things up with my Caracal. I bought the Caracal cause I wanted revenge after I lost 2 Vexors -- one from players.
So I'm hopping from belt to belt and I see a Vexor with 4 drones out. I debate attacking, but figure I would rather not have a sec hit since I'm still kind of a newb.
The Vexor goes after a rat and kills it and I get an idea. I swifty approach the rat as it's dying and I open up the cargo container it dropped and I scooped the loot out... because I know this will flag me as red to him and therefor he gets a free attack on me (and thus I get to freely attack him).
He starts following me as I point myself towards a station just in case I need to warp out quickly (like I said, I'm a newb). I lock onto him but he just keeps following me so I decide to cut my engine and let him catch up. He gets within about 3km and he begins firing at me.
So I frantically mash all my missile launcher buttons (3 assaults with bloodclaw, 2 heavies with scourge). A few missiles start to hit and he immediatly warps out and leaves his 4 drones behind. I procede to slap myself on the forhead saying, "Why didn't I warp scramble him FIRST and THEN fire my rockets? Stupid stupid stupid!"
So I hunt around looking for the guy.
I'm about to give up and go back to my home station when I see him about 30km out from a gate.
I start approaching and begin firing all my missiles and warp scrambling him.
He starts shooting back but he's barely takign my shield down to 80% and I have him halfway through his armor.
I start to feel bad, because I was him just a week ago... sitting in my Vexor with my 4 drones, getting killed for no real reason by some jerk. How quickly the roles have reversed...
So I get him into hull and I click all 5 launchers to disable them. I open up a chat window and say "5mil or you lose the ship" or something like that.
I figure if he is a jerk and says something like, "#$#%^*# u stupid #$@^@$ u suk" then I would procede to dismantle his ship. Though I fully intended to let him live otherwise, even if he couldn't give me the full 5 mil. I was undecided and waiting for his response (afterall, I had him warp scrambled).
So the second I press enter on my ransom message I notice this huge blue glow on the screen. Uh oh. I think my 2 heavy missiles were still en-route when I disabled my launchers. All that was left was a blue glow, some debris, and a cargo container.
I told the guy that I wasn't 100% intent on killing him but I just got a "screw you" for a response. :P
I tried to scramble his escape pod to ransom him again, but I couldn't lock on in time. I probably wouldn't have killed it no matter what though.
I feel kinda bad, because I did to him what was done to me a week ago... and I was angry then... though I understood then and now that it's part of the game and if anything it's what makes the game great. Furthermore, someone killing my Vexor lead to me wanting revenge and getting a more offensive ship. Maybe it will lead this guy to the same and he will come after me now. ;) (nothing wrong with a Vexor though, I don't mean it that way) Also, this guy attacked me first, albeit I provoked him a little... ;)
Anyways, that was my first real PvP kill. It was a rush.
A minute after it was over I actually let out a "Woooo!" out loud.
I can't wait for more PvP.
One last thing... was the cargo-container thing I did considered a good and valid tactic? Since I got no security status loss it seems to be a good tactic for starting a fight.

My god man, well done on the kill but as you are in a caracel maybe think of getting a 20k disruptor and fight at range. I've been pvpping the last few weeks (altho I'm shortly gonna give up my life of crime for.....mission running, I can barely wait.......) and I can tell you that if I had u within 3k of my moa you'd be webbed, scrammed and nossed to death in seconds followed shortly by you going bang.
Remember when you pvp it's alright to ransom the ship as I too feel guilty about killing stuff and always try to give an easy way out but ALWAYS be ruthless cos the other guy mightnt give u a chance if you slip up like u did letting him get within 3k of you.

Well, tbh, taking part in pvp yourself this way means you'll be able to develop a healthy attitude towards it. Next time you lose your ship, I imagine you'll be able to remember this situation and call a 'hey, good fight' to the killer.
Feel the joy. -----

"One last thing... was the cargo-container thing I did considered a good and valid tactic?"
I would consider it a good, valid, and honorable tactic to the point of almost being carebear stupid.
You gave him the choice of fighting you. He didnt have to attack. Hes lucky he had a choice, most people dont.
You did take a big risk. You gave him the first move.

Next time just shoot him straight off. The sec hit is negligible unless you pod him. A 0.0 sec char blows someone up and pods them, =-1.5 sec status right away. -----------------------------------------------

Absolutely nothing nooby about that :) Many people do it.
And don't feel bad about it, you did well, and the only way people learn in EVE, is by losing ships and being exposed to the brutal universe we live in.
Good Luck |

Yeah you might feel guilty a bit on your first kills. But the 10th will be smoother...and the 20th even more etc... keep it up

Heh... He was in low sec, just like yourself when you blew up his ship, you should know the risks. Btw the missles hitting whilst trying ransom can be a problem, I've destroyed numerous targets in a Raven whilst trying to ransom... if you leave just one little launcher on thats it..
Anyway good job.

Hehe, I would say you're possibly heading that direction :)
PvP is great fun, glad you enjoyed it. The twang of guilt is natural. But to be fair, he knew the dangers of going into lowsec and sitting in a belt like that is just silly. Especially after you engaged him previously.
You did the guy a favour, trust me. He'll remember that experience for the rest of his EVE days and it will shape his future :)

Thrilling, isnt it? Your first cruiser to cruiser fights are so much fun, Brennos, myself and a old friend called Kae'Lan used to go round in a Thorax, Caracal and Maller and have a right laugh. "Defending" (beating people to near death then ransoming) our system, where we had backup if and when we needed it used to be so good.
Its so different now.

Well put, Cronuss. Stories like yours often inspire people less experienced in pvp combat to go out there and get some blood on their shirt.

nicely done, and congrats on your first kill! though that Vexor should have BBQ'ed your caracal. Don't feel guilty, you did him a favor; he knew the dangers of going in to low security space, and it's his fault for losing his ship since he attacked you first
PvP is the absolute best part of this game. Win, lose, gank or be ganked, i still love the PvP in this game and it's what keeps me playing. Get ready to go -5.0 and below, yarr!

just imagine every one of your victims is actually Anne Robinson, noddy Holden, or jeremy beadle, and you will never ever ever feel guilty.

Edited by: E Phoenix on 23/03/2006 00:34:21 Nothing like the rush is there.
As for the query as to what ships to use, that answer is always the same no matter how long you've been doing it. Only take what you can afford to lose and always insure it (t2 ships not included). I am having heaps of fun in a Rifter (frig) atm, but usually use a Ferox(battlecruiser).
Oh and make sure you start in 0.4 space or below, not 0.5 unless you want to be CONCORDED. The mistake I have made too many times is jumping to a gate or a station whilst the aggression timer is still active. Make a safe spot in the system before you start pvp'ing, and jump there after you have tackled someone. Gives you the chance to clear you head and not make any mistakes.
Good hunting

one note, don't try to scramble or kill his pod at a gate. His ship at the gate was of course fine cause of the flagging, but pods do not get flagged so if you had locked him in time the sentrys would ahve gotten you and you would be toast. --- Wolven Elite Guard is recruiting - new and old players with high regard for high morals and values |
