I just got the skill to fly this thing. Before I got out and use it what's the best strategy to keep if from being blown up or held hostage?
Align to my warp to a safe spot before starting to mine - got it. What else?
Will it warp fast enough to avoid some one warping in and scrambling me?
What do you recommend in the mid-slot and the low slots. Two strip miner 1's will go high.
Last question, is mining ice worth selling unrefined?
Thanks.

A retriever is like paper. Thin paper.
It is fairly slow to warp. I strongly suggest you warp on the appearance of someone dodgy, instead of waiting for them to hit a belt. Try to bury yourself in the middle of the belts in the system, and away from the warp in spot. It will give you extra time.
What to fit depends on if you are in high or low sec. If in low sec I'd recommend nanos or stabs, as you just won't get the benefit from tanking equipment. In your mids you could use a cap battery or recharger in order to cycle faster.
Low sec ice is profitable, but you will find it hard to mine solo since if you are interrupted, you have no choice but to stop mining, and the cycle time is extremely long.

Thanks good tip on getting away from the warp point.
I am a noob too to Eve. Been playing a couple of months but not much each day.
Is a nano an armor plate augmentation and the stab one of the things that increases agility so I can align to warp faster?
Again thanks.

Nanofiber Internal Structure is the item that will get you to align to warp quicker. Ignore the reduction in structure HP: if you hit structure, you're dead anyway.
Also, try to avoid mining in either the first or last belt in the list, and avoid low sec systems with only a handful of belts to give yourself a little more time to get out.

I use a 15k scanner on my retriever. Nothing more irritatign than running a 3 minute cycle and getting 50 m/3 of ore. The 15k makes sure you only see what is in strip miner range.

Thanks All. Good stuff.
Is the stab as I think... a module to allow the ship to be more agile and align for warp faster?

And have 2 or more at your base with full mods ready for you will lose it at some point and flying around for ship and mods for hrs is isk lost not mining.

Erm, cycle faster? the standard cap recharge on a retriever has enough to cycle at the standard strip miner times and ice miners barely have any cap usuage. How do you mean, cycle faster?

Edited by: Daveda on 23/03/2006 13:11:52 Can't equip a small cap any way... maybe a micro. I equiped two nano panels... the cheap ones, 5K isk each. It aligns and warps relatively fast now. Running is the way to go I think.
My single middle slot is open. Not sure if a stab is a mid=slot or a low-slot. If it is a mid slot, I will put the stab in there if I have the CPU. I only have a single unit of CPU left with my current configuration and skill level.
I was mining in a Vexor before with two Gaus, one CU laser and a Miner II. Yield was about 482 Omber per minute for 1446 for three minutes. Each strip is doing 862 so 1724 Omber in three minutes... not bad at all.
Can the strip I's be fit with crystals to be more effective?

Nope, no crystals on the Strip Miner I. The Modulated Strip Miner can use crystals, but it's quite expensive.
"Stabs" are Warp Core Stabilizers, which help to defend against warp srambling or warp disrupting. However, 1 Stab isn't gonna help much. You need 2 to be effective against Scramblers.
As for defense, you'll be nailed by pretty much everything in low-sec, NPC's and Pirates alike. In high-sec, I actually equip a small armor repairer and pack in the Light Drones. I can handle most NPC spawns in 0.6 and higher. This is quite useful for solo mining. And really, mining in High-Sec is where the Retriever is most useful. You'll just be too soft a target in Low-Sec. Perhaps you could try it when you are a little more experienced, but I'd save it for later. ;)

What is meant by the 15K scanner? How does that work?
Does this mean scan at 15K by limiting the scanner to that distance?

They mean the Asteroid scanner. Or ore scanner or something like that.
My recommendation is do not take your Barge to any lower sec than .5 unless your in a good corp which can provide fighter cover for .4 and lower.
Scanners
My corp is good for that sorta stuff but I'm not prepared to discuss how they operate on the forums, nor should I.

Try fitting a multispec jammer maybe? Should be able to stave off any attacking frigates. You wasted 4 seconds reading this post and you'll never get those back. |

You wasted longer typing it :P
Its a shame that retriever just doesn't have enough CPU for anything that could be useful. I would suggest maybe, some co processors for the low slots and a shield booster and/or extender for mid slots, and maybe a scanner. I get my retriever in 2 hours :D

Edited by: Daveda on 24/03/2006 15:06:41 Got smoked last night in .4 space.
Recovered a strip, Omber and one of the nano panels.
Definately a secure space miner or some lonely 0.0 space location with no traffic.
Saving for another one and will go back to mining in my Vexor in the mean time.

To be honest, it's going to be easier and more profitable for you to use your barge in Empire. Just mine Kernite or Omber in 0.5+ and you're good to go.
Don't take your barge into low sec space if you're a fairly new character.

The word 'vulnerable' was invented to describe the Retriever, just like Chuck Norris was invented to describe the word 'pain'. |

in mid Slot i put a sensor booster on it to expand the target range from 25k to 41k so i can send my combat drones in to fight earlier and in low slot a small armour repairer and a mining upgrade mod
this helps upto 0.5 systems but some rats in 0.5 do eat the armour quite well but so far i have keeped the ship

I just change the overview settings so I can see whatever ore Im looking for...
Scanners can be tempermental.

Thanks all. Nice stuff and a real nice community in Eve.
I will buy another one tonight after I get home from work.
It mines really well.
It also looks really cool.

Yeah, it takes some experimenting before you got those scanners down properly, just remember to hit clear regularly, otherwise it becomes a cluttered mess. And one day, maybe CCP will implement overview filtering on the survey scanners too. *dreams*

i used retriever for ages in .5 systems, i use cap power relay in low slot, small t2 armor repairer and a cap recharger in mid along with 2 mod strip miners, there is no .5 spawn thatwill be able to take you down. i only use t1 med drones and they take out the rats easily. as for low sec do not use barge, use a domi, they can tank mine and destroy rats easily in any sec system

Not necessarily, I escaped on 40 structure once, crazy thing is I could have just deacted the nano to get an insta 300 boost
Alternatively if you can't fit a roidscanner, use the one built into your ship, it has insane range (anyone know what the max is?) The ship scanner doesn't tell you how much is in a roid though.

Edited by: TrinianHG on 31/03/2006 14:51:21 On the subject of Mining Barges... I just completed training for the Hulk, and dished out a whopping 475 Million ISK on one for deep space mining. supposedly mining Bistot you can make around 58 Million per hour.
Now according to a few threads I have read, it is possible to tank 0.0 spawns in a Hulk which sounds awesome because I don't need to be protected by my alt or whatever.
Has anyone actually tried this out?
I think the setup is
High- 3* Strips II
Med- 1* Gisti-A Small Shield Booster 1* T2 Cap Recharger 2* NPC Specific Hardeners
Low- 2* Mining Upgrades
Edit: I don't mean to de-rail the thread

I think the "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Mining" thread in this forum has the info you want about the Hulk tank. Check the sticky...
For the OP...using 3 drones w/ rat-specific dmg, I find I can mine all day long in .5 space; the drones eat up the rats well before I'm into armor.
