Hello fellow capsuleers,
We are researchers in the field of ecology and animal behaviour (from Canada) and of course players of EVE Online. We would like to extend our knowledge to the EVE Online community by analyzing the different patterns observed in the EVE Online universe. We think that New Eden has many similar characteristics with real live ecosystem (example: resource gathering, competition, predation,...). In our first look into this virtual ecosystem, we want to analyse the spatial distribution of capsuleers. In other words, we want to know where the players tend to be in the universe and why (security, ores, gates, stations,GǪ.).
To accelerate the data collecting, we propose to the EVE Online community a sort of "citizen science project", a participative research driven by both scientists and willing members of the public. In that regard, we are looking for capsuleers willing to help us gathering our data. The sampling is very simple and can be done while doing something else (like waiting for ore mining or ressource transformationGǪ.), and it would help us a great deal.
We would need the abundance of players in the system you visit : by copying the list of capsuleers in the system you are in via the local "chat box" and pasting it in an excel sheet (a simple ctrlC/ctrlV !!!). By comparing the densities of players with the solar systems characteristics, we will be able to interpret patterns in the capsuleers population.
If your are interested in helping our project (with absolutely no strings attached), please contact us in game for more details about sampling and organizing the collected data.
For everyone's benefit, we intend to regulary share the results of our analysis with the community via a blog.
Thank you for your time, and see you in game!!

Your time would be better spent learning how to capture publicly available data through the star map/world map control panel. Surveys are a way to sanity-check data from other sources, or to get a picture of data that is not available. Player population and population density can be monitored with more or less perfect accuracy through the API or other means. In the face of this, asking us for surveys of characters in local sounds... amateurish.
if you don't know how to grok the API (I don't), head on over to https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=263 "CCP is changing policy, and has asked that we discontinue the bonus credit program after November 7th. So until then, enjoy a super-bonus of 1B Blink Credit for each 60-day GTC you buy!"

This information of local is not accurate.
For example I was docked in a 0.0 Station. Me and one other character was docked at this station. But he didn't show up in local. Local showed only me. |

It is accurate, he may have had a log-off timer. So his character will not disappear for up to 15 minutes. If he wasn't in local then he was logged off. |

That is much more easily accomplished by opening the in-game map and filter on 'Average Pilots in Space in the last 30 minutes' followed by ' Number of Pilots Currently Docked and Active'. Both can be toggled in the World Map Control Panel > Star Map > Stars > Statistics. Although that information is not 100% accurate at the time you see it, it will be much more accurate then player gathered data. Unless of course you can convince the vast majority of players to volunteer....
If you really are taking the scientific approach, I would suggest contacting Customer Support and explain what you want to do. And how and why. Just use the mail adress in the linked page. CCP is known for working with scientist in a myriad of fields (and still does so) and supporting research projects from various universities, so you might want to give it a try. Good luck. So how do you plan to correct your data to account for alts then, something that has no parallel in nature? Because if I sent you a copy of my "local data", there could be up to 8 pilots that are just me, and they could be doing anything from helping me accomplish a task faster to idly spinning in station or a POS because I'm too lazy to log them out.
Considering the amount of players with alts, how do you plan to account for this... "scientifically"? |

clearly you know nothing about eve. Do you understand that you are asking people to gather intel? Best advice is to look up dot lan, but I personally want nothing to do with your intelligence gathering scheme.

Which tempts me to believe that this is potentially legitimate; Uni student researchers looking for a project, stumbling into something they never expected, and didn't yet fully-understand? Yeah, that sounds pretty legit.

Hello again,
First, thank for all the feedback. We obviously need to re-think and validate our sampling method. The local chat seems to behave somehow heretically. Experience taught us that there is no perfect sampling !! If there were, it wouldn't be called sampling!!! Fortunately for us, it is not our only strategy. We are already gathering publicly available data, like API and other sources. By the way, any other suggestions will be welcome!! Actually, we will probebly do it ourselves anyway (manual density sampling), in order to validate the other techniques. If you want to help, that is very fine by us!!!!
(Ptraci) We want to study the avatars more than the players, so we will consider the alts like separate individuals. You would be surprised to see the number of animals we saw idly spinning in nature!!!
Because we are relatively recent players, there are lots of stuff that we don't know. The statistics available through the World Map Control will help us a lot. Thanks a lot for that!! Participative science projects where the public can participate in the data collecting and other steps of the scientific approach are becoming a growing trend. It is very popular amongst ornithologists and entomologists. We thought it might work in the game since such analysis can teach us very interesting things about the world we spend so many time in. Maybe, we underestimate the value of such information, and it may be too sensitive data to ask players to share. Looking back, it did look like a scheme !!! Apologies for that!! Our objectives are purely scientific!!
Anyway, there are valuable informations that we will surely use and we keep our aim to present you some interesting analysis. In that regards, we welcome any stuff/problems/insight or topic that you think it would be interesting to study with a scientific approach. We might end up writing a blog on your ideas!!!
Thank you and see you in game!

Good luck, but be warned the only people who would be interested in your analysis are the games intel specialists, plus you might attract some unwelcome attention as capsuleer pilots are notoriously fickle, introspective and value their privacy. Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction... |
