yes and every one of them is written by the same guy who puts eve in the number one spot of every list while at the same time making sure everyone knows what a horrible terrible game eve is and they should never ever play it. As much as I enjoy those he slips spreadsheets online in at least twice per article.

They seemed to be preoccupied with some imagined exchange rate for real money to isk, and didn't even hit upon time codes and plex. Welcome to modern journalism, its all flash and drama and very little content or fact.

Without that coversion rate, immaginary or not, outsiders cannot correlate with the game and anythign you write or speak about the game has zero value or meaning for those persons. If you want to make news you need to connect the readers to the news.
If I write for example, that here a bank was stolen in 1992 and 5 million cruseiros (our coin back then) were stolen.. what woudl you think?
You have no idea if that is relevant or not.. well just for the sake of completing the example, 5 million cruseiros could buy an ice cream.. a small one... "If brute force does not solve your problem..... -áthen you are -ásurely not using enough!" |

The only reason it's reaching national news is because some journalists know they can get a lot of hits by misrepresenting what that number actually means.
There was a guy from NPR on Reddit asking for an explanation, and once he heard the *actual* news - that most of those Titans etc probably were not bought by PLEX (money)...he seemed incredibly unwilling to run a story on it. |

So, my cost of $20 for a PLEX is imaginary ?? As is it's ingame Market listings ? Ok. Got it. I now understand there is no correlation there at all.
It's stunning that a troll group of game players are not just happy at actually getting respectful acknowledgement in the press.
I guess it's not the "right kind" of press, since it didn't outline the entire history of EVE's economic system and how it ties in to PLEX, GTC's, and RMT, how ships are made exactly, and a HUNDRED OTHER NIT-PICKY DETAILS that are interesting and accurate but would turn this story into a 10 PAGE LONG BORE-FEST OF BOILERPLATE TEXT that nobody but nobody will EVER READ.
But that is clearly what is being asked for here.
Idiocy, loud and complete.

The deception is that it works both ways.
Eg, you can take your 630m ISK and refund it for $20 back in your wallet. You can't do this obviously (well, you can but it is against the rules and you almost certainly wouldn't get the full $20 back).
This leads the general public to think things like "why didn't they just buy a house with all that spacebux or donate to charity?"
Just to drive this point home - the PLEX For Good campaign didn't make international news (as far as I know). But this event did. |

That was my first thought too, but it turns out it's an Associated Press article that Yahoo. Which explains why it's coherent and addresses the basic Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of an informative journalistic article. Original Yahoo articles never really manage to hit all of those. |

No. Not from a general public that gladly handed over $65,000,000 to Justin Beiber last year.

Besides, it would change nothing. Whether he lives in the USA or back in Canada, that will not stop him from inflicting his dreck and nonsense on the younger members of the public. He'll just be doing it from another location.
When I interjected on Twitter, to all the Beliebers who can only type "We love you Justin, we are with u 4-ever, no matters wut !", the question of "What if he were up on a r*p* charge ?" The only responses were "It doesn's matter. We R with him always no matter what !" Every single one.
