I'm hoping for a definitive answer here. In the past, I've heard opinions on the matter but no real answer. I've tried searches and come up dry (other than more opinions). So, my question is as follows:
If you send a group of salvage drones to salvage Wreck A, they complete it and a single drone starts heading back to drop off the salvage, and you then tell all drones to salvage Wreck B, then does the drone that was returning to your ship "drop" the salvage it was carrying and move on to the wreck? Or does the drone "store it" and return it later?
There's no way I'm the only one out there in the habit of using the "F" key to send my drones about their business, but sometimes I either forget one is returning to the ship, or I get impatient since it takes them so long to move about that I go ahead and send them to another wreck.
Would GREATLY appreciate a dev response on the matter to eliminate any doubts (which happens when you've heard nothing but "I think this..."), but understand if that doesn't happen. :) Ahh, Jita... - http://i.imgur.com/UHGT4xc.jpg |

No idea honestly, but it seems pretty easy to test it... |

You would think so, and I've heard this before as well. Still would like to know. Ahh, Jita... - http://i.imgur.com/UHGT4xc.jpg |

Came expecting a shoot other peoples salvage drones for fun and profit thread.
Leaving mildly disappointed.
Mr Epeen There are 86,400 seconds in a day. You just saved one of them by typing 'u' instead of 'you'.-á Congratulations, dumbass! |

Shockingly, I don't have any salvage drones to try it out with.
Sorry Mr Epeen :( |

I'm going to test it on the test server. If salvage drones produce a wreck then it might be possible for salvage drones to drop the salvage they were bringing back to deposit in your hold. I looked at the information on salvage drones and they don't seem to have a cargo hold to store their salvage in. So it might be just a game mechanic and the salvage just appears at the end of the drones salvage cycle. |

I appreciate it. Looking forward to hearing the results of the test. I noticed as well that they don't have a storage hold at all, which is why I worry about it in the first place (because if they did, it'd make sense that they'd hang onto so much salvage before returning right?) Test results:
Shot belt rats, sent in salvage drones.
Upon seeing the salvage drones complete salvaging and returning I shot at salvage drone I had targeted.
It did not produce a wreck on the overview and as I mentioned earlier the salvage appeared in my cargo hold.
Did this in 2 belts. |

Wow... Interesting results. But I think you misinterpreted the original question (if it was your intention to test that). In fact, that would explain why others say it would be easy to test, assuming they are misinterpreting it as well (I should have been more clear, my bad).
What I'm trying to find out, is if a drone is returning, and then you hit "F" to command your drones to salvage another wreck (which redirects the returning drone as well), then does the salvage that the originally returning drone was carrying get lost? This is something I do constantly without thinking (trying to unlearn this behavior) and why I bother asking in the first place is because I want to know if this behavior is losing salvage. If not, well... we can all sleep better at night. Ahh, Jita... - http://i.imgur.com/UHGT4xc.jpg |

The answer to your question is you have to allow the drone to return. It will go idle upon leaving the salvage in your cargo hold. |

I feel your pain, Thellorms. I too have had this exact same question but was too lazy to post it.
I have always been "afraid" to hit that F key when a salvage drone is returning for fear of losing the salvage of that returning drone. It would be nice to know if it gets "stored" or is lost if given new orders while it is returning.
