Hello all.
I'm currently using a prepaid cellphone tethered to my pc to play eve, and as you can imagine I am paying insane rates for data.
1st gig = $30 + prepaid plan. all data after that is $0.05 per mb.
I was wondering if anyone has any tips for minimizing data usage.
To avoid the obvious answer, Im working on getting better rates, but I may have disregarded a few phone bills in my day, and the companies are a little testy when it comes to giving me a regular phone plan.
Thanks all o7 |

Pretty obvious stuff, don't stream videos, try to stay out of voice chat for long periods of time. |

game itself don't consume a lot of data beside patchs. (it pretty apply all MMO where you need to install large files on your computer)
I think about 1-2mb per hour for EVE online? EDITED: fix number

I'd also consider (assuing you are on a windows system) running the app "msconfig" and checking all the apps that start up with your system - consider turning off any apps that "phone home" from time to time seeking updates that you probably don't even really need. Check all the programs you normally run, and check if they do regular phone homes and either disable that feature or the program itself.
EVE itself uses a very small amount of data. As the poster above me mentioned, streaming audio/video is going to be your primary concern. Heck, i'd even consider turning off auto-image loading in your web browser and only loading images on pages that you really need them to function.

Good lock! also if on windows, change your update settings, to AT LEAST "ask BEFORE downloading" or "manual only".
nothing better tu ruin a DATA plan than having windows update itself.... |

Ship spinning uses the least amount of data transfer in Eve.
Using the market will cost you $5 an hour.
Undocking itself is $1.37, while pvp is about $15 and hour, though in your case it likely be $0.026.
Missions cost $10.77/hr.
The choice is obvious. Any colour you like. |

I played via tethered mobile phone for 3 months, while I was between moves, then waiting for Internet install.
Data usage is very low. Patches are huge; I downloaded those at work instead [I had to write a script to break them into 64 MB chunks, so the corporate firewall wouldn't blacklist the download site for 24 hours]. |
