Fairly straight-forward question.
I use a Ferox for level 3 missions currently and have enough money to buy a Raven. I'll get the Raven to continue to earn money in the level 4 missions - like most others do.
Having said that, as I learn the ropes of PvP, the easy answer is to say to learn in a Frigate, where your cost of death is low. However, are people mostly using Cruisers, BS's, or Battleships out there for smaller-team/solo PvP?

The most popular ship used in PvP is the one that players can afford to lose (in every sense of the word).

I'd say frigs/cruisers are generally more widespread in usage than BSs for small-scale PvP. They're cheaper and easier to fly, and much more fun than a bunch of slow ass BS's slugging away at each other.

Probably a shuttle of some kind. I know I end up in one after I lose my ship and pod and go shopping for a new one.

All PVP taken into account, I'd say interceptors. Fleets usually have a few amongst the battleships and inty gangs are not exactly rare. Flying in an inty gang is lots of fun too :) |

Cruisers are popular as they're a nice mix between firepower, agility, and they're cheap. I tend to keep three or four fitted cruisers on hand as well as a BC or two. Interceptors are always great fun for PvP too.

been seeing hell of a lot of t1 cruiser lately. especially the lower tier ones... they have all become pretty useful and make hell of poor man's AF.
fix those bonus TUX - don't just screw AF up MORE!1

The majority are interceptors. I used to use a AF, but what a money sink that is  ...
At the moment I use a cruiser, Maller in this case, fully insurable and fitted with tec2 mods it's awesome
