CCP is upping their minimum system requirement to Lion:
CCP Veritas wrote:Greetings Fruit-Computer-Using Spacefriends,
This summer weGÇÖre going to be releasing some foundation technology updates to the Macintosh client for EVE Online. As can happen with such things, we need to update our minimum supported OS version to one that supports the new hotness. Specifically weGÇÖll start requiring OS X 10.7 GÇô Lion. If youGÇÖre one of those folks using a Leopard version, Snow variety or otherwise, you need to upgrade to at least Lion in order to continue flying the unfriendly skies.
We havenGÇÖt got a date pinned down for this exactly but it should land somewhere in May or June. IGÇÖm hopeful that giving a few months warning allows everyone to make time for the update so this is a smooth transition for all involved.
I'm optimistic about this, but I can afford to be: I'm already on 10.9. Proud founder and member of the Belligerent Desirables. |

Since 10.9 is free to download anyway so there isn't any need to buy anything, just go onto app store and download from there (And give yourself a few hours). Most games are upping their requirements to 10.7 now and won't work on anything lower. My move from Snow Leopard to Mavericks was smooth |

Can we expect an overall cider revamp ? Or a "better than cider you will love it" piece of technology ? Or even a native openGL client of doom because CCP DEV TEAM ROX ?

I think 10.9's hardware requirements move the minimum up about two years; I'm not 100% sure on that. Unless you're running a more than 5 year old Mac, I wouldn't worry.
I'd expect a later and greater version of Cider. How much greater is an open question; TransGaming is quite coy about Cider's feature set. Proud founder and member of the Belligerent Desirables. |

Will a late 2008 Macbook fit 10.9? Or am I better off sticking with 10.8? I am currently running Snow Leopard so will have to upgrade to continue playing the game. I recently upgraded to 4MB Ram and have a SSD on order so don't really want to change computers just now after putting -ú200 into it in the last week. |

You should probably stick with 10.8.

4GB RAM, yes?
That's pretty much the minimum that EVE will comfortably run in. More is obviously better, but I ran EVE on 4GB RAM on a mid-2008 iMac for two years, successfully.
That said, it might be time to start saving your pence for a new machine. Proud founder and member of the Belligerent Desirables. |

Giving a few months' warning gives people time to procrastinate until the last minute (or later) and then complain that CCP didn't give enough warning that they were upping the system requirements. :-) http://eveboard.com/ub/1939472205-31.png |

I could be wrong but I read that somewhere unless it was moving it back to 2009. I can't for the life of me remember which. Either way it doesn't affect me because I'm middle of the road with 2011 and have been blissfully running 10.9 since the day it was released. :-) |

I must be dense, but I just figured out why the Mac client is getting an update, and roughly what we can expect: There's a thread about running EVE for Windows under the latest WINE build, and how much better it is than the current Mac client--with a couple of exceptions.
If CCP can iron out those exceptions and wrap EVE around the latest and greatest WINE, then we already have a pretty good sense from that thread of the sort of improvement we can look forward to. Proud founder and member of the Belligerent Desirables. |

I've just got it running myself under Wine and the difference is night and day. I'm not sure how you'd make a client for a Wine wrapper though. There's a lot of effort getting the client up and running and it's got some issues with the display flickering every so often and can't run the station environment which is a waste of time anyway so no real big issue.
It's not perfect but it's currently better than the official client |

Yes, those are the glitches that CCP would have to sort out. However, they're in a better position to sort those out than any of us are. Configuration is not an issue; they're paying Cedega to take care of that part.
The vastly superior performance is enough of a carrot, clearly, and for metrics reasons CCP would rather have Mac users running the Mac client so that they have accurate numbers. The easiest way to do that is to have the Mac client perform well. Proud founder and member of the Belligerent Desirables. |

My first iMac was a 2008, it updated to 10.9 no problem... Now the hardware is a different thing. So glad that when the old one went "crazy"/retired, I bought 2012 iMac. haven't felt bad about that at all. xoxo Amarisen Gream

I have run both > and more most things I still prefer the mac client vs the wine one. (mostly the keyboard shortcuts).
Heres the big kicker > if you can have a bunch your players work out the kinks > stop paying transgaming however much they pay them for the rights to their software and move to supporting your own wine bundle, you (CCP) would save a ton of cash. Maybe even enough to hire a guy or two to help maintain said wine wrapped client for mac.
Also seeing as the wine version has more features then the mac one (twitch), you wouldn't be limiting players to content b/c of computer code issues.
