Edited by: Pottsey on 11/04/2006 21:28:47 I wanted to do something a little different for a change of pace. So I got thinking and decided to go back to my routes. I started with smartbombs only but had to give them up pretty fast. This little project started out only for fun but it turned out to be pretty effective so far. I might just keep using this a bit longer.
Take a shiny new Megathron and make sure you donÆt tell the crew what your about to do. Now fit 7 large smart bombs T1 and 1 civilian turret or laser, something without ammo. In the mids slots fit 1, 100MW AB T1, 1 Heavy capacitor booster, 2 large shield extenders T2. In the low slots fit 7 PDS T2 modules.
Take a level 3 mission warp to the area and have fun. I just did the first area of an Serpentis Extravaganza without any problem. Very surprising actually I thought I would have to warp out. The high hitpoints and small passive regen is holding so far. But I do need to test more.
Pick a rat group, AB towards them, turn AB off when in range and let rip with 4 to 7 smart bombs depending on the rat group with all bombs set to manual. Reapeat 2 to 3 times by now all the rats should be dead. Perhaps move a little to get into range of any rats you missed. Repeat another wave of smarts bombs. Move to next group repeat. The key it to not auto cycle smart bombs but only set them off when things are in range. So far cap regen when moving between rats has been enough to keep the smart bombs going. I only had to use the Heavry capacitor booster once when I used too many bombs.
At first glance DPS looks bad at 233.3 DPS in the first wave. But you got to remember you can hit more then one target at once. So if you hit 5 targets thatÆs 233.3 x5. So 1166.6 DPS not bad for a low skillpoint T1 weapon system. Due to this being fun I only used basic T1 smart bombs instead of investing in T2. Its defiantly worth looking into better named or T2 bombs which will boost DPS a lot. ThatÆs for tomorrow.
EDIT: Think of a mission like blockade where lots of rats spawn ontop of you.
I might scrap the 1 civilian turret for another bomb. The turret was to aggro rats and pull them towards me. But so far it been best to head to the rats full speed. They donÆt seem to respond or lock me until about 14 to 10km. At which point I am going fast enough to get into bomb range before they speed away.
For none deadspace mission a microwarp used in burst mode might be better then AB. Going try that tomorrow. The cap penalty might hurt to much.
Advantages of this setup. Its fun and different. No locking needed. Impossible to miss if enemy in range. No losing DPS from missing your target. No tracking problems you hit small targets just as well as big. No warp core stab needed any NPCÆs that try to warp scrabble die fast. No ammo to mess around with. Cheap setup.
Disadvantages Everyone will think your crazy Not to be used in gangs of people who are not in your corp. Perhaps best not to use around anyone else full stop. DonÆt use drones unless you very good controlling them.
Having only done 1 mission it might not work for all missions. Anyone spot any flews I missed or got tips on improving the setup?

pottsey, add sentry drones?
drop the sentry drones, run toward the rats then start the smart bombs

I did this with my Prophecy and medium SBs a couple of weeks ago, and it worked very nicely...until only Cruiser rats were left. At that point it was time to warp back and refit, but it sure got rid of those annoying Gallente frigs very fast.

Let's rephrase that to.. "Don't use drones that orbit the enemy". Just put your sentries up and let them shoot at things freely.

On serious note, i know it is a joke to make minmate train some more.

Damn, and I was already logging in to start the Minmatar tree from scratch.
Just waiting for Potsey to find one lv4 mission where Smartie setup excels over conventional ones; now there is challenge :)
Once long ago I was NPCing and figured a 5km smarty would be good anti-scrambler protection. But no, seemed that they were orbiting at 7km.
Oh well, fit 7.5km Sansha and go back. Lo, now (after blast or two) it looked like they started orbiting at 9km, almost like they were adapting.
So I gave up, bought 9km smarties, and went on chaining more predictable PCs.

don't the large smartbombs reach to like 9 or 10K? That should fix em.
demand is greater then supply = high price.

Perhpas including a Webber in the setup for scramblers? Once their slowed, just set course right at them and activate your AB, should run them down easily enough. Jamming would be a prob, but idealy you already vaporized the jammers with the Smart Bombs =)

The reason why my tempest doesnt hit frigates is because... umm... I feel sorry for their small "barrel" size compared to mine.

Hahahaha, envy 4tw
On another note, the fast moving angel rats that dance about 8.5-9k from your ship and move FAST (to fast for DS afterburner but you know...) these might need the web and thrust trick or the drone massive.
But apart from that sounds like a good fun thing to try.
