Hello all, Please note that I have only been playing about 2 weeks now and I got really discouraged last night with mining and the Butt Pirates. So, I have questions.
I have tried: Link, Link2, and lastly and most costly Link3
1. Last Night I was in Pashanai IV where my corp's main base is and I wanted to go find a asteroid to mine. I fitted my noob miner ship (venture) with a miner I and a Probe Launcher to find "ships" and a small laser. Now I started to mine on this asteroid and I had my "ship" probes out scanning. Why? well the logic in my noob head is maybe this will show me if any Butt Pirates come on me for a quicky. Well, scanning was going good and I was a 1/4 full of Ore. I was also watching the ship list in the top right to see if any "red" icons come up. Next thing I know I see my ship shields drop half and I start to run with my tail between my legs. Before I even get turned to run I am dead.. So the questions for this:
- A.) I am sure there are "master" miners out there that a process to mine and not worry about Butt Pirates. Does anyone have a procedure for this? Besides taking a buddy along to swim with so they can watch your back.
- B.) Is it better to run with mining drones or mine with a limited time?
- C.) I was in a section that was .5 Sec, was this my issue as a Noob?
- D.) Can someone explain the Butt Pirates difficulty level? I mean when I was in Pasha VII noob area I had no issues with Pirates. They came and I could easily run and get repaired. So with that do the Pirates increase when you leave an area and move to another or do they scale to your level?
I understand that I will get flamed on this post but I have to ask because I was so mad last night. Not mad at Eve but more at myself, sure never fly anything you're not willing to lose but I am more mad that I have to buy all the parts again. On to my last question:
- If you have parts (lasers, Probe Launcher, etc) and you need to replace them, is there an easier way to find your "favorite" items in the market place? I mean crap the list is HUGE in the market place, there has to be a more efficient way to replace lost parts.
Thank you for your time everyone, and if I am in the wrong section please let me know so I can move my post there. |

I can't answer all your queries since I don't mine, but hopefully can shed some light on a couple:
The NPC pirates that spawn in asteroid belts get tougher as the security status of the system gets lower. NPCs in 0.5 asteroid belts are a fair bit tougher than those in 0.8, for example. If you feel your ship is not tough enough to survive in 0.5 system belts, try going back to a higher security system or having friends come along for protection.
The Market has a quickbar, which you can see in this older screenshot (I cannot login to get you a recent one), located next to the search function. You can add an item to the quickbar from the market by right-clicking it from the market (or the market search!) and clicking "add to market quickbar". That should help you store your common items. Or you can search with the search tab if you know the name! Member of the EVE Blog Pack - Through Newb Eyes

Anyhow, in an effort to be helpful...
As a systems security status decreases, the rats difficulty increases. So it could have been rats (NPC faction pirates) which killed you. Your probes will not help spot them before they arrive in your belt, nor will your directional scanner, as they spawn there (as opposed to warp in like players). Your best bet is to keep eye on the overview, or even zoom your camera out so you can see the whole belt and see he rats when they spawn. |

Gonna - Thanks for the advice and yes they were the NPC versions. That makes more sense about the NPC not showing up but man that sucks that they just "spawn" on you. Ok, i'll change my wording for the Pirates but still they are!!! LOL |

3 quick things as I should be working atm.
1. If you are in highsec. Drones...drones...drones...use them. 2. You dont need probes to see approaching ships. You are mixing D-Scan up with actual ship probing. 3. Any system of 0.7 and lower will SPAWN rats. See point 1 how to deal with them. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Always mix that up...lower then .8 or .8 and lower.
Also...OP, you were at your corps base of operation. You could have asked your corp members to help, at least thats why most people join a corp, to play with each other. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Just a few things to add here. The region you are in spawns Blood Raiders which do mostly EM and thermal damage (see this link for damage types http://games.chruker.dk/eve_online/damage_types.php ). For drones to carry for defense I would recommend that you carry Hobgoblin drones (They do thermal damage which is good for a lot of the NPC rats).
For fitting a venture, I would recommend that you fit two Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I rigs and one Small Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I rig to your ship. That little change alone will cut the damage you take from Blood Raiders almost in half. You need Mechanic 3, Jury Rigging 3, and Shield Rigging 1 to fit them yourself. (only takes a few hours of training). Alternatively you can see if a corpmate can fit the rigs for you (you don't need the skills to fly the ship with them, just to mount them yourself. (personally I would just recommend you train the skills).
Mount two mining lasers and let your drones kill any rats that spawn.
For your midslots consider using something like a small or civilian shield booster to help repair you shields while you wait for the drones to finish off the enemy. Another things to put it mids could be things either shield extenders or a shield hardener of some kind. I would recommend using a survey scanner if you are in a busy are so you can find the choice asteroids to mine.
For your low slot I would recommend a Mining Laser Upgrade unit so that you can get more ore per cycle.
Unless you are probing for the sake of finding explorations sites, I would recommend fitting a tractor beam (to pull in the wrecks you drones are making to loot them) or a salvager unit (fly over to the wreck when you are full and salvage the ship).
One last bit of advice, keep moving. Half of a Ventures defense is being small and fast. If you can't orbit your asteroid you ar mining, eject some random piece of garbage from you hold in to a jetcan and orbit that at 500-1000m. This message brought to you by Experience(tm). There is no reason that you should have to run away from belt rats (NPC pirates) anywhere in highsec in your Venture. I think it's a safe bet that your problem is that you haven't yet figured out how to fit your ship properly.
For a mining ship, you want to balance tank and yield. I can't recall exactly what the slot layout on that ship is, but there are a few general principles I can give you. Almost every ship you will fly can benefit from fitting a Damage Control. This module increases your resistances to the different types of incoming damage. In your mid slots, you should fit an Adaptive Invulnerability Field and a Shield Extender (probably a medium one). You should also fit shield rigs, preferably for the damage types that you expect to encounter. On a Venture facing Blood Raiders, you will want EM and Thermal resists.
Once your ship has a tank, you then will fit some mining lasers to it, as well as a survey scanner, an afterburner, and whatever else you have space for. Lastly, you need some combat drones to kill the rats, and maybe a salvage drone to make a little more isk from their wrecks.
Your probe launcher is of absolutely no use for detecting NPCs. If it is an expanded probe launcher and you are using combat probes, you can filter it to ships like you described and locate player ships in space. Generally this is done for purposes of combat or larceny. Your directional scanner can also help you to locate players, but neither of these will allow you to detect NPCs everevolutionaryfront.blogspot.com |

Thank you everyone for the great info, I am at work and will read them in a bit..
J'Poll - that's good to know.. not sure why stealth mining is bad. I was thinking along the lines of " hi no can see me I am invisible mining woohoo" . I am guessing it means something else.. Will remove that link. :) |

Let me start off by saying: WOW!!! just WOW with the information you guys have given. I was half way expecting to be laughed at or made fun of. I have made notes on all these great points about where my ship is wrong and my location/procedure.
Thank you for taking the time because I know it was NOT easy writing all that information for a noob like me. I really enjoy the idea of Mining/Explorer and even building one day so this great help. I have training to do so I can fly drones etc..
Thanks again.
*I posted this but I noticed it did not apply, I am re-doing it. I hope it does not double post. |

If you like the idea of exploration, check out gas mining in wormholes. The profit margins are pretty high. The venture is the perfect ship for it, and there's always an element of danger. It's not the way you thought...It's the way Google finds certain sites that can get you into trouble.
Best not to intentionally or by accident advertise them, specially in a place with new players

This.
The people who post in this part of the forum tend to be nice (exception threads apply). This is also because CCP and the moderators monitor this part of the forums quite closely for non new player friendly behaviour.
Drop down one into General Discussion and you will see the other side of EVE. And even the people who post here do like to laugh at people, but you have to give them a reason to laugh at you. Fortunately for you, you failed to give us one as you do have the right mindset for EVE by not blaming anybody for an error and taking it like a learning experience.

We like to fatten up the prey before pouncing.
Why scare you away from the game by being nasty now, when we can build up your skill and confidence, watch you build an empire, steal your empire from under you, burn what we can't steal, and leave you still hooked on the game ready to get on your feet all over again?

LOL, ok thanks all. Now that I am home I can read through these posts much better . Whew I was hoping that I did not come off as complaining about EVE being the reason I lost my ship. I was definitely mad but I knew it was me and posted for help how to fix it.. Now I have a list of "do" and "dont" so lets buy another ship.
Unfortunately I think I'll move my tail back to a higher Sec and work my way to the .5 area. This is an amazing game and I am excited for the community and the future of EVE.
Thanks again all and I hope to provide good humor in the future because I will be laughing too. |

Remember to pillage and then burn, flaming loot and live ammo in the same cargo hold is a health and safety violation.
