Which is better? Quick shield loss with tanked armour (and less lo slots), or tanked shields and quicker armour loss (and less mid slots)???
I know that it's all down to personal pref in the end, just wondering what the general opinoin was.

if u can fit a amp without gimping urself shields are better
in the frig lvl armo is a lot better in the crusier lvl 90% of the time armor is better in the BC lvl 70% of the time armor is better. in the BS range. 90% shield is better in the dred/carrier range 99.9% better to shield tank

just for more info
Shields have crystal inplants adding upto 50% more boost. shields have amps that can boost >40%. Shields have invols that can go upto 50% to all resistances, and 37.5% is common to find! you can field 2 amps and a booster for great efficency. there are officer PDU taht add over 13% cap recharge and a cap boost as well as shield hp and recharge, oh not to forgot pg boost.
also shields are more efficent than armor reps, look at any t2 booster + amp vs a t2 repper!

It's pretty much equal based on hp / cap so just go for whichever is better based on your skills, your ship, and the situation you are in.

There is a great article in the New Citizens Q&A forum about the relative strengths and weaknesses of each:

They're both fine choices. Not much more to say, they're balanced and they're different. Armour is nice for the lazy people who just like putting on their tank and running it constantly. Shield can be more tricky to micromanage. It basically comes down to how many mids and lows your ship has.
I'd normally post loads of information but I really can't be arsed right now ^^;. EDIT: Also, ignore the first person's reply in the thread. That "without" guy is clearly without his marbles.

That's what swings it for me.
I've never really found a sustainable shield boosting setup that matches my ships/SP, but on my Prophecy I can just kick the repper on and forget about it. Bliss.

Armour tanking is so much easier imho, shields require alot more attention.
Mebbie its cus im so used to watching the bar under the shields?
Still i find it much easier to play with, with long repper times but u can clearly see the boost when it happens.
il armour tank anything, Raven especially, i feel med slots are far too valuble to waste on tanking --------------------------------------------------------

I've done both, but I have never armor tanked in Caldari ship and I've never shield tanked an Amarr. If your ship has more lows, armor tank, if it has more mids, shield tank. Generally speaking, Caldari = Shield Tank, Amarr = Armor Tank, Gallente = pick one, though Armor seems better, Minmatar = don't tank, run. ---------

Ok, for armor tanking let us say explosive, what's best? Two activated hardeners and a passive non active plate? If that is a good set up then how much of a penalty do you take for stacking the two activated hardeners?

Insanely good post on it here for the entry level information to tanking, which it sounds like is what you need.
