Hi,
I do a bit of mining with my alt. and up to now the little I had, I'd haul to the closest market hub to flog it there.
I'm stuck with an indy ship for hauling I don't want to invest training time and isk moving to the next tier of hauling ships.
So it got me thinking, and that's my question:
Would it be worth my while refining my ore and just haul the refined products instead ?
It shouldn't take me too long to get half decent refining yields (in around 100%). But I'm not sure if I'd save many hauling trips.
Atm, i'd haul about 4M.isk worth of ore in 1 trip.
Note that I'm more worried about the number of runs to the market hubs but if you're telling me I could potentially loose significant cash ...
Oh, and I'm happy to admit I'm a bit of noob (back form a 3years break and can't remember which ways is up or down) , consider this while answering.
What would you guys think?
Thanks for reading.

Much easier to refine the ore and carry it in that form, also if you train refining V refinery efficiency IV, ore specific II and get your standings with the corp you will be refining at (not faction) you should get 100% yield and no tax with standing of 6.7 (I think)
Makes you more profit on your ore and much more easily hauled in a more isk dense form
Maybe look at alternate ore 'compression' methods too. See if there is any ammo or such you could manufacture from the common ores and skill up to do that. Turn the ore into greater isk density goods and haul them. |

there are 3 basic issues to consider- total value of goods hauled, % loss if refining yield is low, and the possibility of a local sell order.
if total value hauled is too high, you have to start worrying about suicide gankers. your best hauler will be a gallenete industrial, as the iteron mark V is the best general hauler, and the kryos has a mineral hold. on the other hand, the Miasmos has a very large ore hold and can best haul the ore to market in bulk (42,000m3+10% per skill level, or at least 462,000 veldspar per trip).
% loss in refining from low skill and/or tax is significant to your ISK. the tax at zero standing is 5%, and a 95% yield can lose ISK on some common ores. if this is too low, your better off stockpiling ore until you can train refining up.
look at the local buy orders. if the local price isnt good enough for you, then you can place a sell order and wait for the buyers to come to you- they can see across the region, and a lot of haulers make good isk buying from cheap distant sources. just set your price above the distant trade hub buy order by a little bit and wait. Also, it may be possible to sell a very large quantity of ore as a contract, where the buyer will need to come pick it up.

Since you have indicated that you don't want to spend the time to skill for a better hauler, I'm assuming you also don't care to skill for refining. But I could be wrong. Minerals take much less volume than ores.
Miasmos is a decent ore hauler. If you can fly an Iteron V, you can fly the Miasmos.
You can also calculate the mineral value of your ore and just put it up for sale at that amount or slightly less. Good refiners will be interested. Free Ripley Weaver! |

Personally, training all Industrials to at least level 1 is worthwhile in my opinion. They are a generic ship type, like shuttles, that everyone uses at some point.
Also, racial Industrial level 3 [and Advanced Spaceship Command 5] gives you access to freighters, and training level 3 really doesn't take that long to train either, so that is a good level to aim for. |

If you roll Gallente(Or start trianing the firgate & industrial skill) you can invest in a T1 hauler with a Specialised hold for minerals or ORE.
This is a alt indy guy who im working with a friend, I help mine and haul it from the belt, and he has good mining & refining skills.
So I recently brought one of these;
http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Miasmos to grab the ORE, at level IV i can haul just over 2 full jet cans!
Now i havent used the following, but i believe it will suit your needs for the time being without being a massive SP sink;
http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Kryos
it has a bonus to the amount of minerals! So you should get a decent size haul in for the money/sp investment. It really depends on how much your mining and how much you want to move at once.
I did a little experimenting and the usual cargo increasing items DO NOT EFFECT THE SPECIALISED HOLD(I could be wrong with the kyro as i havent had a play with it yet). So be wary of that. Although it does free up the slots for tank, quicker allignment, stabs for lowsec runs ect. |

only your level in industrials increases the specialized hold size. A miasmos will wove about 1/3 the ore you can haul in an orca, but much lower skills required and much less likely to be a gank target. |

Another option is to build up till you have approx 1 bill worth of minerals and then contract red frog freight to shift it. If you are hisec that is. It's cheap and you can get your stuff to the best markets. |

I never touched his hair...he just stole my spare glasses. Kryos is better for minerals as it has a deicated mineral hold, iteron V with cargo expanders for ice products as there is no dedicated hold hauler for those (although you can haul the raw ice in the niasmos) |
