When NPC rats attack a group of ships, do they attack in a particular order or is it just random ?
The reason is if I'm in a gang mining and we have a few miners and a couple of escorts, it would be great if there was a way to encourage the rats to attack the escorts rather than the soft targets.
From what I've seen so far it seems random but I'd like to check.

It's random. The only way to get them to attack a specific person, is for everyone else to jump out. Once the main person has them, don't kill them. So long as you "tank" their fire, they won't change targets, until the tanker warps out.
If you want to keep killing rats, then everyone should be aligned to jump out, and jump ( except escorts), as soon as a spawn hits. Once the spawn is fully engaged, the miners can jump back in. I don't recommend this method, as using a tanker is better. --------- "English doesn't borrow from other languages. Sorry to disagree with you Sarmea, but I've noticed that rats sometimes switch targets now. So having one ship tank is no longer safe for the rest of the crew.
This change seems to have happened around the time of the bloodline patch.

I've been in a belt for hours on end without this happening. ---- EVE-Central.com | Obsidian Technologies - 0.0 Manufacturing, Defense and Logistics. We're hiring! Mail me |

The rats do change targets on occassion.
They usually like to go for the weakest targets. The tank should fire off a few shots from time to time to make sure the rats are focussed on him.
I've been in situations where the rats found my little ole' cruiser a mroe tempting target than the big mean battleship just sitting there, especially if i get within their optimal.

If the rats change target or not depends on where the rats are (inside or outside deadspace). Deadspace rats stay on target more than none deadspace, normaly you only need a target lock (yellow square) for them to be locked at a target.
For belt rats if they have started firing on one target they will never change target unless they get out of range or something similar happens. I use logistics ship for remote shield boosting and ones they are all shooting at my main ship I can warp in the logistics and sit there tanking all day because they are never going to change target. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

bieng a relatively new player in eve and having played previous mmo's i find the pve aspect of eve to be very dull. the biggest reason is because rats appear to be mindless.
not to hijack the thread, but has there been any dev. talk about actually implementing some decent pve content?

I know there has been talk about it -- not sure about how specific the upgrades to PvE will be. As it stands, ratting is mostly for money and faction gain, not for experiencing the excitement of the game. You will need human opponents for that. ;) ___________________________

EVE was never designed to have PvE at all from the start. But the pve aspect of eve is growing all the time. They are adding more cosmos constellations, more complexes etc. There are probably going to be a pve part of the faction warfare in Kali.
I do doubt we will see a npc behavior revamp anytime soon, much more important pvp related things that they are working on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have found that if you kick in a MWD you will draw the rats away especially when they are first coming in. I think it is to do with the signature size of your ship. Veni, vidi, vici |

It's just like how the buttered side of toast always land on the floor.
Say you have a Cyclone or 4 and one mining barge out in a low-sec belt. The rats invariably target the one ship that can't tank anything.

The next time this happens, check to see who has the worst standing with those rats. I haven't been on enough combined ops to see if this is actually valid, but I would think that they would go for whoever has the lowest standing among the characters. About the only other thing I can think of is signature size. They may just be going for the 'biggest' target.
