Local should be a place you opt to join, like the Region/Constellation channels.
Maybe just remove it from 0.0
I never liked local, would be happy to see it nerfed

Everyone always looks at it throught the lens of miner-hunting. What if you want to use local like it's designed to be used, that is TALKING to people in-system? Or are we restricted now to talking only to people we already know and corp members? EVE is a social game, people. Removing the ability to socialize with people just so you can hunt a little bit easier is absurd, especially for the newer players who don't yet know anyone in-game. ______________________________________________

Local is the only means of protection for a miner/mission runner/deadspace hunter at the moment.
Scanning with the 15AU ship scanner doesn't help as you'd have to do it every 5 seconds - or more often.
Extra module doesn't work. Or do you have free module slots and fitting? --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. They got Ray |

They system could be changed only in 0.0 and maybe low sec. Your name would show up, if you said something. Btw. I'd like to see members in space gone, too. I think jumps in the last hour gives enough information. I'd like to see more secret operations.

I like local, but if it were to go I'd want to see who owns the ships I pick up on scanner. __________________________________________________

I think if local got nerfed it should be in degrees, based on system security, with 1.0 being as is, and decreased utility as one lowers the security rating. There could be PoS beacons that corps could deploy that would replicate some of the higher security functions.
None the less, local is a great tool for casual and new players. It encourages us to take risks in low security. It also enables me to contact the corps who claim an area as I explore it, making negotiations for access to it.

how many threads must there be ccp before you do something? 10 a month? 100?
it is obvious the majority wants a change (majority of posters at least) so why not try some things, you can always go back if it sucks.

Dunno, maybe you should ask the carebear whiners.
If game changes are made based on the volume of the screeching, this game is doomed to the loudest common denominator.
On the matter at hand, leave local alone. If it makes your life too hard, adapt or something. Isn't that the mantra? Kicked in the head by a horse, what's your excuse? |

So why do YOU need to be spoon fed by CCP?
Avoiding combat is already a pain in the ass with the introduction of Covert Ops, Bubbles, and Interdictors. Making it easier for you to attack a miner just means the miner gives up, and goes to hi-sec.
Surely thats not what you want? ___________

The devs have stated in the past that local was never intended to be a scouting tool.
Personally i hope it changes, it's stupid to see who is in a system just by opening your local chat window. It kills any sense of espionage or hiding when even the cloake ships show up in local. It throws tactical advantages out the window in the process.
I'm more than sure they'll develop tools for players to use more actively once they do get around to changing local. Personally i'd like to see local still exist but work like other channels where you don't appear until you talk. Introdcue some tools such as modules to scan at certain distances and skills to boost them and things become a lot more engaging and realistic. _______________

Edited by: SunWuKong on 19/04/2006 16:50:24 What if local is kept the same except the 'show info' option doesn't work on a cloaked pilot? The avatar can still load, so if you know your faces, you have an advantage. Otherwise, all you have is a fac, but no info on corp/alliance/standings/employment history.
edit: and blocks name so it cannot be looked up through people & places.

About 1% of the Eve population is represented on these forums.
Adapt or die.

Local is fine. The only people who clamor for it are those who want easier kills. Period.
Scanner is NOT an option. Sure, it helps when you know what you are looking for, but just randomly scanning every 5 seconds, and praying nothing pops up. your toast.

Local is fine the way it is. Eve is a multiplayer game - by definition, player interaction is part of the experience. "Nerfing" local will only reduce the opportunity for meaningful player interaction. For example, if you're mining and a hostile enters the system, you run and hide. If you're looking for combat, and a target enters the system, you start scanning/hunting. If local no longer tells you who is in-system, you cannot mine ANYWHERE safely EVER - you'd never know a war target was in-system until you were dead, which hardly seems like meaningful interaction. By the same token, imagine how much time you would waste looking for targets in empty systems because local didn't tell you it was empty. Again, hardly meaninful interaction to be scanning an empty system for people who aren't there.
I find the "use the scanner" argument spurious in that most systems cannot be scanned from one spot so as to show all planets/moons/belts. So hunting for targets becomes an awful monotony of jumping into a system, scanning, warping to a new spot, scanning, warping to a new spot, scanning, and then jumping to the next system. Ugh.
Furthermore, so what if you can see someone in local who might be cloaked? That individual cannot be seen on scanner, and you don't know if they're in a cov ops, a stealth bomber, or any other ship of cruiser class or larger. Get over it.
There are a great number of issues more important than this that should be resolved before even thinking about changing local. Drones, blasters, can spam, etc.
In short, Eve is a game. That means making some compromises with reality - in this case, knowing who is in a system upon jumping into it. Without this information (which benefits everyone equally, for good or ill), I believe Eve would become significantly less enjoyable. So leave local alone! _______________________________________________

I have no free med slots, mista. Ever heard about pvp?
That's the point. It's a choice you have to make. If you choose to PvP alone, you have to make the decision "Do you I put on the ship detection module or the Warp Scrambler?" or something of that nature. If you choose to PvP in a group, you could designate one person to be your eyes and your ears, effectively only losing 1 module in a [small/large] fleet of ships.
Also: to the person that said the only people who wanted local removed are the scum pirates in low-med security space: bite me. I'm a miner. I can fly a caracal, but it's only for ratting and missions. I spend the majority of my time mining and running missions -- I have yet to grief anyone in this game. I don't like local the way it is, and I'm a carebear.

it is obvious the majority wants a change (majority of posters at least) so why not try some things, you can always go back if it sucks.
This logic has destroyed many games in the past. Posters are not the majority. Posters are the most vocal players is all. Threads can go till everyone has carpal tunnel syndrome but if its deemed by the devs as nothing but selfish player whines, they ignore it (something I really applaud having experienced the other side of the spectrum, try playing SWG for a couple of months). I recall a NOS thread a month or two back that went 20+ pages. Went no where and in the end was just a lot of nerf NOS vs don't nerf NOS.
Local is such a part of the game that there really is no quick fix. Everyone wants a quick fix, but just taking local away and throwing a band-aid on it won't work. Real game planning and design of lengthy magnitude would have to go into working it out if the devs even think its worth putting man-power into it. I think they have enough to worry about (memory leaks anyone?).
Local seems so trivial at this point. We're all waiting for Kali (or a slice of completed content a la Red Moon Rising) and I'd rather see that and the current nasty REAL bugs come out than to take something that isn't broken (though being used in ways that weren't originally intended).
Isn't game stability/bug fixes and new content better than pushing for changes that really only a minority argues over?
