I'd like to hear what some of the CSM 9 candidate opinions are on the topic of Ship Painting and Customisation, any thoughts or ideas they have, and if it is part of their agenda.

The more variety the better, at all manner of price points, with a healthy of in-game and microtransaction based options. Ability to do basic color swaps as a low end option, also a plus. Basically the only thing I don't want to see come out of it is a huge emphasis on the microtransaction based skins over in-game ones, whether that's simply "more of them are real money only" or "cool ones are real money only". My thoughts are that the frigate skin option should have been a 50 AUR price point, but that it should have been a 3-pack or even a 5-pack.
A single skin is a hangar ornament. 2 or 4 left over skins are something that people undock with and do stuff.

Shhhh Malc you're not running again.
And yeah. Ship skins and customization are awesome. I'd like to see alliances and corps be able to license designs or reserve designs or include logos or whatever-- basically, some way to have a trademark "look" so anyone who sees them coming will quake in fear. Or laugh. Either way.
Some should be microtransaction, some should be in-game achievement. The in-game achievement ones in particular allow CCP to add a cool tangible but non-gamebreaking reward to certain behaviors-- imagine if you could find a super cool skin through exploration in the deepest reaches of space, or if more tournament participants walked away with skins as a way to say "I did this", or if faction stores sold LP skins to highly valued allies, so you could sport your loyalty to such-and-such group in-game.
Basically, ship skins are a huge bonus to the "community" part of the game, and I hope the present experiment succeeds and they're used far and wide. http://warp-to-sun.tumblr.com -- my blog |

I am all in favour of the idea and of the methodology of testing the waters first.
I agree that it can be implemented better, if it gets the full go ahead, and I honestly look forward to that. Price point can and should slowly balance. I'd like it to move into the market so our own famous Eve economics becomes the deciding factor, not an externally imposed limit.
But
I am against giving FULL artistic license to the players, not just for immersion breaking but also for the extremes that they would push the boundaries of common decency and/or trademarked images. (I am looking at you, Gallente pink pilots, Hello Kitty as well as all you Bronies) But Ali's comment about a fleet all the same colour scheme . . . wow so much cool.
The game has an artistic palette and feel and I still want some of that to remain.
As for Logos, as some folks have asked about. I am all for them with the same caveats above.

I really like the idea of the ship skins. I do agree that people should get more than one; as Malc said, if you only have one ship and it's going to be a pain in the neck to replace, we aren't going to be seeing them in space.
The other concern I had was with the application method - using a manufacturing line in order to add police lights to a Comet ( <3 ) makes sense, but I am sure the production lines in high sec would love the congestion. :D Personally, I think it'd work better from an end-use standpoint if they were a fitting that could be added to a ship/dropped from a wreck, but CCP needs to do whatever works best for their current program architecture.
Also, I would gladly pay for a few copies of a purple and gold skin for my megathron. :) |

I'm happy to see that it wont be spawning ships, as a hull is needed. Thus, not ******* over Industry.

Ship skins are great. I'm happy with them being available both from the Nex, and from other places like LP stores. I wouldn't be happy with the way they're doing it, if that was the long term option, but as it isn't, I'm happy enough.
The battleship price feels a little high.
You should be able to take a plex and break it down into the aurum tokens. (and be able to break the aurum tokens into the smaller aurum tokens). This is to get round the "I want to paint my own ship, but a plex is too much at a time" 'problem'.

I'd be surprised if anyone was against ship painting in general. And why not? It's a terrific way for people to have fun and stand out. I want alliances and corporations to have the rights to certain designs so everyone can look spiffy in formation! This is a great way for CCP to make some money but avoiding gameplay affecting issues - the pay-for-aesthetics is a proven method of income generation with community support in pretty much any game.
And if we stretch our vision to far into the future, there's a lot of really cool ideas that could be explored such as copyrighted designs that people could sell, transfer, or lease. Limited edition skins that CCP can put out for various events, rare skins earned in various ways - there are very few limits to this.
I do want to ensure that the wishes of the playerbase is fairly represented to CCP when it comes to price though. Personally, I feel the price needs to err on the side of too low rather than too high, else we won't see them being utilized very often. My CSM Thread My Blog @wsethbrown |

A little late on the reply but I'd like to weigh in on this one.
CCP is currently doing Ship Painting right... and if they continue to move forward with additional features to enhance the selection of skin schemes purely as cosmetic, and available in a variety of ways. I can't see this turning sour.
Aurum being spent on customizations are the perfect vehicle for this outside game influence currency and micro-transactions. This is healthy and I'd love to see more options continue to become available. The caveats to that being a) It does not increase performance. b) paint schemes do not affect ship stats beyond value. and c) Paintjobs and Ship skins don't become the focus of a full rollout.
The reintroduction of the flashing lights on a comet with the police edition is quite welcome, but a small part of me was left hoping all 4 empires would get the Police force treatment.
Moving forward I think it'd be a great option for Alliances have the option to purchase customized ship skin's available in the same way you may have your alliance Logo changed, my calls for the GSF bumblebee Black and yellow Rifter Complete with Fat Bee decal or something similar becoming an option would be outstanding.
I do have several criticisms. I very much dislike the current mechanic of paint skins being set up as a blueprint. I'd love instead to see it as a Module or Rig slot. I'd also address possible lag concerns by adding ship skins to the graphics menu as something that could be turned on and off, because god knows when you're zoomed out in a cap fight, you don't really care about which Rokh or Maelstrom has a sick paintjob more so than volleying them off the field.
I believe for me ship skins fall into the category of "Things that are nice, But please don't make it CCP's sole purpose in releasing content."

Personally, I like the Ship Painting and Customization direction. Some thoughts would be the following:
Ship Skins: The AUR route is fine, and allowing for skins from the various NPC organizations is a great way to start. Eventually, I'd like to see customizable skins with 3-5 color options so alliances/corps can edit their ships to show their colors.
Logos: I'd like to see an Alliance/Corp logo option for certain points on the ships at some point. I don't think a customizable image option is safe as it could lead to some inappropriate images being displayed on ships.
Ship Numbering/Editions: Since all ships have an I.D. I think it would grand if CCP could make it possible to show the VIN number of your ride. You custom up your stock ship, and you can also tell when it was made, how old, and such. This opens the door for some neat bragging rights for those with some old ships, opens the market for acquiring a collecting, and also would make it fun for killmails, if any of this is possible. Just an interesting option, but not a priority.
