Hideaki Anno does not know how to end a series, movie, whatever. Period. That's what happened.

I came away thinking WTF. Even watched the extra episode thingies with the 'alternate' ending.
Anyway, Patlabor 4tw. At least it's a semi-realistic Anime.

Manga? Manga = comic, anime = TV, so I assume you mean anime. Do you mean the movie, or the TV series? The first movie was pretty mediocre, IMO, and the second is not better either. On the other hand, the second one does smash every anime cliche in existance to bits (by not having them), but the plot is still a bit lacking.

I didn't think about the order that much after the first ones, but those are some great series that certainly deserve a mention. I might've forgotten something, but I guess it's better to keep the list short(ish).
I will probably include Lain after I've had the chance to see it. I've had it on my HD for like 2 years but I just need to get started.
And just to voice my contempt, here's my pet hate list:
1. DBZ (drawing work is horrible, nothing else is any better and god I love the fanbois) 2. Naruto (used to be good around the Chunin test but then it started peeing on the viewers' cereals by mimicking the bold & the beautifulÖ) 3. Love Hina (lovely the first time you saw it, but now it just reeks of cliches and idiotic repetitious humour that makes me wanna commit unspeakable acts of violence) 4. Green Green (I watched the first episode so call me prejudiced but sheesh little girls with huge boobies and nothing else. I guess it's not wholly a bad thing (boobies rawk ofc) but I would recommend good old fashioned **** instead. This also includes all other teenage boy boobie fantasy animes with no real content) 5. Mecha animes (Mechas are cool! ... or where when I was 10. Now they are boring. Pretend space-ships ftw)

Why's that? Its one of those series where you have to turn your brain off to enjoy it. No thinking deep thoughts, no nothing, because there's no plot to follow anyways.
Its much better in its original comic strip form IMO, because everyone is used to turning off their brains to read comics, but its much harder to do so for a TV series

OK, so its much harder for an intelligent person to do so for a TV series...
But anyways, whenever I think of Azumanga, I can't get that scene with Tomo and Mr. Kimura's wife out of my head:
Tomo: Whoa! Its Mr. Kimura's wife! Everyone: *blink* She really exists! Tomo: Hey, lets see how nice she is. *Tomo chugs a soda and rolls the empty can down the walk towards the woman* *Mr. Kimura's wife sees it rolling past and chases it so she can toss it in the recycling* *She runs smack into a pole* Tomo: Wow, she must be really nice!

Nothing, imho, stacks up to Cowboy Bebop, but that's me... it was my first anime and the first series I've ever watched all the way through. Real Folk Blues 1 and 2 were by far the best episodes of anything I have ever witnessed. You will like Rurouni Kenshin though, lots of humor, lots of seriousness. Im a car nut, so my favorite is Initial D. Other than that, Appleseed was a good one, Neon Genesis Evangelion was also good (made me question my sanity a few times at the end, but good nonetheless). Gundam was ok, I loved DBZ when I was younger. Other than that, I never really got TOO far into anime.

In no particular order...
After Century Gundam X. Probably the best of the G-Wing-X triad of AUs; I'm still struggling to get myself to like Zeta Gundam, and while I do enjoy Gundam SEED and SEED Destiny, I recognise that my reasons for doing so are pretty shallow (Lunamaria Hawke <3).
Rune Soldier. Same creator and world as Record of Lodoss War, but it definitely has a more comic bent to it. This is every D&D session you've ever played (and survived) while drunk.
RahXephon. Superficially, it's an Evangelion clone, but where Eva descended into a dark, blood-drenched angst-fest buried under pseudo-religious trappings and a lot of unnecessary philosophy, RahXephon never lets its own mythos lose its fantastical, inspiring quality. Oh, and it has a more varied and likeable cast. And a lead who you don't want to smack in the mouth by midway through the series. And an ending that leaves you feeling content and at piece rather than as if someone just punched you in the gut and stole thirteen hours of your life.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Smart, inventive, funny when it wants to be, dramatic when it wants to be, with some of the best-balanced action sequences in any modern anime. Frankly, if you don't like this you're probably a hater.
Azumanga Daioh. I'll let Dark Shikari sing this one's praises. Suffice to say it's some of the most relaxing fluff I've ever had the joy of watching.
Full Metal Panic. Modern day mecha/espionage/high-school comedy series. It doesn't do anything particularly new or ground-breaking, but what it does do, it does so well that you really don't care that it's not treading any new ground.
The Vision of Escaflowne. Epic fantasy romance/action/drama with mecha elements. It's not simplistic or childish by any means - Escaflowne's world is a rich, complex, and dangerous one where violence and death are stark realities - but I found that it appealed strongly to my inner child and aroused the same sort of feelings as Mysterious Cities of Gold did back when I was five.
Uchuu no Stellvia. High school in space; it's one of the few genuinely feel-good anime that doesn't leave your teeth hurting, and the ship movements are very much akin to EVE's, although the world itself is not. I defy anyone to watch this and not love Arisa Glennorth.
Witch Hunter Robin. Modern day occult drama. Slow-paced, but it has a dreamlike, lanquid quality instead of simply seeming to drag on. The whole show has a slightly unreal quality to it, and the characters - Robin herself especially - seem just a little fragile and disconnected from their world. It's not for everyone, but it's the sort of show where there's no middle ground in its fandom: you either don't care for it, or you love it.
Bubblegum Crisis. Whether it's the Megatokyo 2032-33 OAV series, or the Tokyo 2040 TV series, this is an enduring favourite of mine simply because the characters that drive it are so well-crafted and likeable. Avoid Bubblegum Crash like a hostile HAC with leprosy and the plague, though.

Trigun GITS:SaC FLCL Cowboy Bebop Outlaw Star Most of Samurai Champloo.
Interesting story about NGE- They ran completely out of money by episode 20. They couldn't afford animators, so they used stock footage, storyboards, and discarded footagee from earlier episodes. They managed to snag on the Voice Actors because they had full contracts, but most artists were paid by the hour.

For me I like animes that are unique and different from normal usual anime. Naturally I watch all kind of anime (harem animes ftw). If you like not-so-mainstream ones, try these:
---------------------------------- Now and then, Here and there (One sick puppy)
Green Legend Ran
Elfen Lied (Brutal violence ftw)
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Based on a novel series, extreme well made series for more mature audience)
Trigun
Zipang (New series, very intresting anime. There is some talking on certain forums about how this anime will never be released in USA and I think I know why )
Space Ship Aggaruter (I think I typoed name )
Ranma + (Well what can I say? Harem AND comedy. Currently rewatching all those kazillion episodes)
Juuni Kokki (If you havent watched it, you have missed alot)
Scrapped Princess (Nice refreshing story and not so typical after all)
Azumanga Daioh ()
FLCL (When you watch you go: WTF. When you stop watching your even more WTF)
Great Teacher Onizuka (O M F G! There is even JDrama of this series!)
Infinite Ryvius (Nice space anime)
Vandread (another very nice space anime)
Maison Ikkoku (Very fun and generally speaking "normal people and no magic or mechas"-concept)
Excel Saga (Another WTF anime series. All Hail Ipalazzo)
.//hack-Sing (For us MMO addicts. "How come I must know, when the obsession needs to go" ..)
Video Girl AI (You know.. for your needs you rent a videotape but..)
Record of Lodoss War (Remember, second part of show is better than first one )
Kimagure Orange Road (80'ish Harem animes rules!)
RahXephon (Better than NGE but same genre)
Stellvia the Universe (As someone already said, very good stuff)
Battle Athletes Victory (If you favor sports anime .. with SPACE theme )
Irresponsible Captain Tylor (Utterly silly spaceship series. Must for EVE fanatics) ---------------------------------- Hope people find something new to watch from this list.

I'm sure I mentioned Guu in my list, and How can I forget FLCL! great anime.
As for Neon Genesis this is what I heard:
The REAL NGE ending is the movie "end of eva", but due to it's contents (huge bible references and Shinji ****ing) the TV people deiced not to show it. Thus at the last minute they had to put together a new ending for the show (EG the "TV" ending). This is the one made form stock footage and storyboards.
The wierd thing is if you watch the real ending and then watch the real ending a few times and then watch the TV ending you can see how they were trying to put the same mesage across.
Any one watch Monster, I've only just started watching it but it;s by one of my fav Manga writers.

Actually, that was mostly down to the director going proper medically bat**** insane, and gainax running entirely our of money. Which is why they had to wait a while to release the 1st version of the ending, and then the second part, which were then semi-merged into the final version of the ending movie - no cash to do the animation with, and a director that made the mad hatter from alice in wonderland look well-balanced. ----------------

Out of all the people that posted 2 people really impressed me with their selections. EVEkill and pointing out Jungle wa Itsumo, truely a must see. Also Kuolematon Rakentaja has the best and most diverse suggestions in this entire thread so far. Rumiko Takahashi is a god, and her work must never be overlooked. For those that have not see Juuni Kokki check it out. Especially if you are a LOTR fan.

I don't watch TV, let alone cartoon network
The reason things end up on Cartoon Network on Adult Swim is generally because they're the best of the best. I personally, on the subject of anime, only settle for the best of the best. I almost didn't even watch Fullmetal Alchemist because of its flaws.
The problem is that the vast, vast majority of anime (including a lot of the stuff you say that is less well known and "very good") conforms to very standard anime cliches, which turn me off incredibly quickly. I have only enjoyed two series, ever, that use these cliches:
Fullmetal Alchemist: I put up with Edward's stupid anime-style facial expressions and the whole crap about him being short. It was annoying. Excel Saga: This was a satire, of course. Thus, the anime cliches were utterly intentional and made perfect sense. Azumanga Daioh: This was truly funny, which excused the cliches. If anything, they helped the comedy.
I was introduced to anime through "progressive anime," and ever since the beginning I really have not enjoyed any serious anime that wasn't in that category. This is reflected in my choice of serious animes: Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Serial Experiments Lain, Last Exile, etc. These may seem like "the popular animes", but generally progressive animes are widely publicized, and thus are the "popular" animes.

It is the official Otaku Lord of EVE's duty to uphold proper growth of future anime fans.
As for Sailor Moon... I have it all on LaserDisc.. very expensive :P
Yes, that is a import copy of .hack//vol1 I was going to import all of them, then I found out that they have Japanese track option in the domestic versions (which save me a ton of money). If you wonder why they are not with the other PS2 games, it's cause they each have the OVA disks. I keep all of my other imports seperate from those two shelves. ------------------

I just saw this:
Azumanga Web Daioh
The ending alone makes it worth watching
Quoted from the site, for those interested in the history of this video:
Originally by: palehorse864 For those of you who are curious about this, I will give you a little background on it.
Originally, there was not supposed to be an Azumanga Daioh television series. The original plan was to split 153 or so Azumanga episodes across 153 or so 5 minute webisodes. Due to the popularity of the manga, the release caused their host company to be flooded.
When the company's bandwidth was used in such large quantities, they pulled out of their contract with the producers. Left with no hosting or anyone to take payments for their subscription service, they had no way to produce any more web episodes after this one.
Still wanting to earn money on the manga's success, they decided to split the 153 episodes or however many they had planned into 5 minute segments on a 26 episode tv series. Thus we have the Azumanga anime we all know and love. There was also a 15 minute Azumanga movie with a higher budget that condensed many jokes. Fortunately, the tv show came out which I think is the best of any attempt to bring an anime out.
So basically, this 4 minute "shakeycam vid" turned out to be so popular it slashdotted their servers instantly. Thus, they created Azumanga Daioh: the Anime.

In no particular order:
NGE + EoE - At first it didn't really interest me, but has definately grown on me...
Azumanga! - DS has explained this.
Last Exile - Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky turned into a series (pretty much), and it's really, really good.
Full Metal Panic, FMP? Fumoffu, FMP:TSR - Semi-serious, plus random comedy, without much pretentious romance, no, surely not!
GITS:SAC + GITS:SAC 2nd Gig - Yeah. Ghost in the Shell. Ownage.
FullMetal Alchemist - Started off a bit meh, but by the end, dang. Very good.
Gundam Seed - Normally, I don't like the Gundam series. But this one seemed better than most of them.
Cowboy Bebop - Just very cool. Great music.
Samurai Champloo - Also very cool, but not as cool as Bebop.
Lain - Very very good, if not a bit disturbing at times.
Pants have pockets -> Pockets hold wallets -> Wallets hold money -> Money is the root of all evil -> Ergo, pants are the root of all evil. |

Hunter X Hunter Full metal alchemist. Bible Black
Oh and Naruto would be ok if there wasn't a 15 minute flashback/disgusting endless drama scene in each and every show. I mean, why would we care about some old memory of a nutcase our main character is about to kick the **** out of anyway? ---- The _Ultimate_ thread <<- HAHA i removed the link

KAA fansubs. They have it in mkv format (or ogm, can't remember) and you can select sound output (english or japanese). You must have the correct codecs (or just use VLC) _____________________________

I'm not that huge on anime unlike, uhm, some people here, but there are gems.
Cowboy Bebop is brilliant. Just see it. It's not gonna change your world or anything, but it is beautiful, full of atmosphere and the music is fabulous. Besides, space bounty hunters? Can't go wrong with that.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is good, had a big impact on me at the time, but it might be a bit difficult to get. The ending? INSERT SPOILER WARNING! Well, they basically fixed the human condition with their Instrumentality Project. The "alternative ending" was crap (ok, not crap, but cheap), an attempt to make it more digestible by people (which actually didn't work all that great and diluted the brilliance of how the series actually ended).
Those are the ones I'd endorse people to watch.

KAA = best subs ever. Period.
5.1 surround sound with AAC audio. Full DVD-quality H.264 video. Best subbing fonts, very readable. The best codec pack there is (CCCP). Highest base video quality (they use R2 DVDs for video, and take the subs from R1 DVDs) High download speeds (I've seen over 500KB/s off their tracker) etc
