I just lost a Pilgrim with a cov ops cloak at a low-sec gate camp, so I'm wondering if anyone here can tell me what I did wrong. When I clicked "warp to 0" on the next gate, I immediately hit F1--mapped to my cov ops cloak, but nothing happened, so I hit it again, thinking I might have clicked the button too soon after clicking warp to 0, and again nothing (I've done this many times before). By the third time, it was too late, they were already targeting me.
Does anyone know what might have caused the cloak not to activate? I didn't get any message, etc. Could it have just been an internet hiccup? If so, it's a lousy way to lose a ship. Follow me on Twitter at @FigaroDevars |

Hmm, that's possible; I hadn't thought of that, but it doesn't seem likely because I took enough time to actually look at both ships to see if they were using sensor boosters, and the Pilgrim only has a 5-second reactivation delay. Follow me on Twitter at @FigaroDevars |

When you hear "warp drive activated" you can activate your cloak without making an error. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Have been objects (container, corpse, etc.) nearby or even a ship that was approaching your position by trial and error already? If it's not activated on your overview you may not see it in space as well. Maybe you spawned 2.1km away from it, but it was directly in your acceleration direction? It's not unusual to drop uncloaking things in a gatecamp or corpse laying around when the gatecamp was running already for a longer time and especially corpses are usually not activated in the OV. |

If your cloak fails to activate you will see an instant error message with the reason. You can't get trigger-happy when trying to activate a cloaking device coming off a gate-cloak; but even if you didn't double-trigger the cloak and thus disable it, there's a chance you might have been locked up by a high-scan-resolution tackler (an "insta-locker" can get in the lock and tackle within one server tick, especially on a target that's cruiser-sized or larger)... I wish I had thought of this. I just came back to the game a week or so ago, and I forgot that I could check the log. Unfortunately, by the time I'd seen your post, I'd already logged off once, and the log seems to have been cleared. Follow me on Twitter at @FigaroDevars |

Fluffi, Marc, & Silvetica,
I think one of those things must have happened. They were both running sensor boosters, so I think it's possible they started to lock me before I could get cloaked, but it's also possible that I accidentally double-clicked the module. Follow me on Twitter at @FigaroDevars |

happened to me just last night, CCP could really idiotproof the cloaking mechanic a bit to protect against accidental double-clicking, especially considering how often commands are just dropped because of some timing issue. It's so flipping silly to have a recloaking delay but not have any delay to prevent accidentally decloaking right after you've cloaked. My terribad blog where I QQ and rage about Amarr FW |

Firstly, kudos for asking "what did I do wrong?" rather than immediately blaming it on the mechanics or CCP. I'm not being facetious here - too many people will just immediately assume that the fault is with the game, so it's refreshing to see your attitude. Most likely, as others have said above, is that you had a recloak timer ticking down and tried to re-enter cloak before it expired.
When flying a cloaked ship, my general course of action is to wait about ten to fifteen seconds after I've jumped through the gate to assess the situation, choose a destination to warp to and collect myself. This allows any recloak timer I might have to tick down, and allows me to make informed decisions about what my next move should be. Once I've decided to warp, I hit warp to 0, wait about half a second (I couldn't tell you the exact amount of time, but you'll get an instinct for it) so that the game will have had enough time to register that I'm leaving gatecloak so that when I hit my cloak button I'll immediately enter cloak without a problem. Thank you Nexxala. I found it. There was a wreck within 2000 meters. So, I guess there was nothing I could have done. I tried to burn back to the gate but a Pilgrim is way too slow to get back in time. At least I know though. It's even more frustrating to lose an expensive ship and not know why. Not really as he's saying an insta locker can lock you in less than a second before you are able to cloak, and that's wrong. |

Always have a TAB in your overview which shows everything. Always check this during gate cloak and make decision if u have to burn somewhere and try cloak, or can u just warp+cloak immediately. |

Your logs should show you if you were unable to cloak due to an object in space. If there was no object in space, then you simply messed up the timing of the button press. Princess Nexxala told me how to find my logs. There was a wreck within 2000m that prevented me from cloaking. It surprised me because I warp/cloak all the time, but in the flurry of events, I didn't know why my cloak hadn't worked. Coming out of a gate jump right next to a wreck is seriously bad luck. The only thing you could have done there was to have a bracket/overview profile that shows everything. I routinely fly with all brackets on specifically so I can see things that may decloak me.
Let us assume that you had known the wreck was there for a moment. In this kind of situation, pretty much your only course of action is to try to crash the gate and hope they only have warp disruptors, not scramblers, and not too many webbers. Free Ripley Weaver! |

Jump gate
Wait 5 seconds (or not if you were not cloaked before jumping gate)
Warp to whatever you want
Wait for half a second
Hit Cloak
Wait to see the cloak button go green.
If cloak button doesnt go green, wait another second, it will go green.
Double hitting the cloak at this point will make it go red.
The most important step in this process is that 0.5-1 second wait in between warping and hitting hte cloak. Hit the cloak too soon after hitting warp and IT WILL NOT REGISTER.
And as others have said, you need to wait out any cool down for the cloak you got on the other side of the gate.
Also, being near any debris or drones/ships will prevent you from cloaking too, so if you know you are jumping into a sizeable fleet, be aware of that risk. |
