Do all the tutorials, read the mission text carefully, don't fly what you can't afford to lose and if someone tells you that you can't do anything useful in the game for the next (1, 2, 6, 12) months, ignore them.

what kind of help are you expecting? there is an encyclopedia's worth of knowledge that *could* help you, but without specific questions, i would not know where to start.

Welcome to EVE! Once you've finished the tutorial missions (do them all!), the sisters of eve epic arc is a good place to get a bit more combat experience versus npcs (as well as a fair bit of isk for a new player).
After that, faction warfare would be a good bet if you are interested in pvp combat. FW folks tend to fly a lot of small cheap ships so it's a good place for a new player to get acquainted. Other options you could look into include RvB, Brave Newbies, or Eve University, which each have their own flavor of new-pilot training and attitude toward combat. (RvB mostly combat with very little training and Eve-Uni vice versa).
Whatever you do, do it with people. Talk to people in local. Join a few chat channels. Go out to lowsec and convo the player that blows you up. You'd be surprised how often they will be friendly and willing to give some pointers. Interaction with other players is what makes EVE fun. www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

Don't be afraid to lose ships....
Here's a 2-second newb guide I'm making on the spot:
-- What to train? For long trains, focus on Engineering skills first. Don't be afraid to train a bunch of skills to level 1/2/3, especially in drones, navigation, spaceship command, and weapons. Explore what different skills enable you to do. In the next week/month, you should download EvEMon, and develop a skillplan to round out your character as you explore different aspects of the game.
-- What to do now? Explore the game. Try mining, try missions, try some manufacturing, try exploration, get your ship blown up by concord in highsec (beware of killrights), lose a ship in lowsec, find a monument to visit on EvE travel and attempt to get there, perhaps navigating with dotlan maps.
-- What to do later? Explore the game's professions, be it something "honorable" like missioniing, mining, trading, etc. Alternatively, try something a little more devious like scamming, pirating, or ninja salvaging. Perhaps be the villian, and dive into suicide ganking, thieving, and AWOXing. Eventually, you'll need to figure out a means of making isk in this game. Isk opens up opportunities, but remember having isk is no fun if you aren't spending isk. The ISK Guide is a good tool for that.
-- And always remember, no matter what ship your target is flying, it will die when you bring enough friends. Look into the game's player run corps, where you can find aspiring nullsec conquerors like Brave Newbies, structured get-to-know-the-game groups like EvE Uni, or any of the 1000's of ingame corps that may help guide you in this sandbox universe.
Good luck, remember you will lose ships so don't undock what you can't afford to lose, and trust others only with that you are willing to give up. |

Love your frigate, and it will love you.
Push it to its limit and try to do stuff with it that everyone says you can't. |

Get out of the rookie ship as soon as you can. Any frigate is tenfold better than the rookie ship. You will be given frigates as mission rewards. Once you get it, get into it. If you lose it (which you shouldn't), oh well, you can get back into the rookie ship.
At the end of all tutorials, you will have about 8-10mill in ISK. If you are worried about losing this frigate: don't. You will get to finish the missions quicker, and with 8mill ISK you can buy plenty of frigates
One last thing, which seems to be an engraved mentality of many players especially from other MMOs, don't fit your ship with junk you loot. Fit your ships by deciding what you want and buying it. |

Fit your ships by deciding what you want and buying it. That's actually really sound advice. I never considered that people do this, but it makes sense.
