Edited by: Flying Spur on 25/04/2006 14:29:21 OK. I just wondered since a friend of mine has a software company and has a very interesting new product (yeah!), that maybe could help improve the game, and reduce lag and so forth. But as far as I know, the software in question require the servers to run Solaris or Red Hat Linux.
If this is a breach of anything, like no commercial things on the boards, please remove it. Just gives u an idea on how I see that this software could help CCP:
Quote: ORtera's patented technology reveals bottlenecks, capabilities, constraints, and load imbalances no other application can reveal. ORtera is also the only application that captures discrete, empirical I/O activity data at each layer of the storage subsystem, analyzes its composition and shows you how the I/O for each process is transformed by each layer.

no no .. thats what they want us to think they are running, while in fact they are probably running something completely different, like MacOs X ______________ Only in the Tales that humans tell, do the hunters kill the wolf in the end. |

There has been plenty of info on the dev blogs about the fact that it is windows 2003 server, and MSSql, look them up.
The reason your system lags some times is cause they think it's funny playing 950,000,000x950,000,000 freecell grids. ---

Gotta be much more than 950m x 950 grids lol but those grids are only activated when u happen to land on em.

Linux in a professional enviroment?
Please, if they are gonna use something its gotta be unix/bsd or any comercial alternative. Linux is for ppl without money and lots of time :)

Edited by: AxYdIa Xpress on 05/05/2006 04:47:53 um unix would really make sense, but i dont get wut you mean by linux not being professional, since after all its based on unix itself, just modded to fit ppl's needs.

when did "unix" become a actual modern operating system that people use? unix is the "father" of many OS's including linux/BSD/macOSX/darwin/solaris and many others.....saying its gotta be unix and it can't be linux is a contradiction in terms. the "UNIX System" series of OS's stopped development some time around 1998...the only system that still bears the name Unix is IBM's z/OS UNIX system...and its not exactly popular.
and yes linux is a professional enviroment....theres a reason that countless companies do infact use linux on their servers and many are starting to use it on their client desktops.

Ohnoes, I spent $875,000 on hardware on 30 servers that will be running Red Hat, I didn't realise I was breaking rules.
Red Hat is getting a lot of traction in corporate environments fyi, I've had as many Red Hat Boxes put in this year as I have Solaris and Wintel.
Back on topic the SQL boxes run on Windows 2003 but the application boxes are running native python which probably means some form of Unix based platform, doesn't really matter more than that I don't think.

So what causes the lag? It certainly could not be any malware/trojans/viruses getting past that much vaunted and tighter that a fish's bunghole Microsoft security, that's for sure!

A combination of SQL Server and Windos Server. A 486 running Netware would be more efficient.
