After a pause to being a pod pilot and caring about family and clan issues, first thing I see is the destruction of my Rifter.
"What is this ****? Why have you changed the construction of the Rifter? Where's the tracking bonus?", I demanded shortly after my return to my workplace. "I was just two years gone and everything I believed in is in turmoil. The whole lowsec is in the grasping hand of the Slavers, my Hurricane vomited it's modules, my Firetail is worth nothing on the market anymore, the Amarr are laughing at us. Everybody got a technological boost and you think to switch the tracking device against more falloff will help?"
I shot him. "Who was that idiot?", I demanded. "He was from the authorities. Republic Fleet and that." "Call his new clone." "Miss General, that was no pod pilot. He was a mere human." I stared at the mess. "Maybe better like this. He deserved to die for this. Now anybody else explain me what happend to my blueprints?!"
"Mam, eh", a young Sebiestor technician tried to explain. "We worked on the designs during your absence for childbirth." "So?" "And this is what we have for you." "Falloff for the Rifter? Are you mad?" "To fit him better into his role, Mam." "Role? The laughing stock of the fleet or what?" "No, Mam, the tackler-brawler you loved soGǪ" "What?! What the **** is this?! The Amarrian lasers build up their main damage between 3 and 6 km. This is where the Rifter must not be flown. Didn't I teach you flying the Rifter?" "Yes, Mam." "And with the falloff you come to which range?" "Around 5 kilometers from the target, Mam." "In the death zone of Amarrian lasers. That's just terrific. Who had that idea?" The young Sebiestor was pointing to the guy with his brain to the wall. I shot another time. "So maybe we can safe this fuckup. Try to fit some artillerys on it." "Mam, there's not enough grid for three artillery, a thruster and a long point. And the long point sucks away all the energy in a few seconds."
I stared at it. "Okay. Forget it. Make an official announcement that I'm personally taking back any Rifter from the market for the price of it's minerals. I didn't do this fuckup, but I will try to safe what is left from Minmatar. Make an official announcement. I buy all Rifters for their mineral value from market. Any amounts. And I will replace it with Slashers. The Slasher is working?"
The Sebiestor was a bit ashamed. "It has no grid but it's a fine vessel. We got some additional slots in it." "Okay. Make it so. Are there any ships left for Minmatar that actually work?" "The Breacher?", a young Vherokior said. A boy from the tribes, that I freed from the shackles a few years ago. "You are kidding? That's ******* missiles. We Minmatar don't use Missiles." "We must, Mam. There's not much left. The HurricaneGǪ we can't fit it anymore. It's useless." I stared at him. "Still we have the Cyclone. That's a trusty ship." "Mam", the young Sebiestor said with a low voice. "That's a missile boat now." "A MISSILE BOAT! WHAT IN HELL ARE YOU DOING TO MY SHIPS?!"
I had to sit down. "Spiced wine. I need spiced wine. With Sebiestor tears in it." I got a mug of it and took a long swallow. "What else is left of our fleet." "Mam, good news. The Vigil got it's second launcher." "Fine. I demanded it from Republic Fleet four years ago. Finally they delivered. What else?" My team was looking at each other. "The Burst and the Scythe, Mam?", the voice was very thin. "You mean the Fleet Issues?" "No, mam." "That are ******* mining vessels. No sane Minmatar is setting foot in one of these." "They got shield repair upgrades. And and and we finally fixed the Reaper." "Does it stand a chance against the damn Velator." Silence. "Okay. So what do you have for plans for my Rifter? Show me. Let's safe the day."
The Sebiestor took a step forward and lay a notepad with a plan on my desk. "This here will safe the Republic." "Let's see. Ah! You stripped the Rifer of it's useless bonus modules and put an Energy Transfer bonus into it and", I studied the plan, "great! The long missed remote tracking bonus. That's an awesome idea. We do that. Maybe it's worth something after that. Can only get better from this point. Dismissed."
I drank my spiced wine until I slipped from my chair and fell unconscious under the table. FREEDOM, PUNK & AUTOCANNONS |

In fact I fully understand what the Republic Fleet tried to do.
They improved the Slasher that much that it now competes with the Rifter. And to safe the trusty hull from being absolete they tried to change it's role.
As an engineer I understand that. But it's like madness, how it is done.
I have been sitting in the trusty Rifter a lot more than most pilots in the history of New Eden I guess. I loved that vessel. And I know of it's weaknesses and strengths. Just yesterday I was fighting several duels, where I respected the wish of my opponents not to destroy their ships. Which I find hilarious, but they were young pilots, I'm a veteran so it's their call. I have destroyed enough ships to let it go. Don't need any more prove on my killboard.
I'm a bit rusty now with my skills, but I know that ship.
There is some problem with this design. First of all you can only survive in a Rifter if you keep away from the killing zone of a laser. And the primary historic task for the Rifter is to counter the Slavers vessels. It's a bad idea to fit shield tanks against Slavers, either from the ability to easily punch through our shields and try to exploit the main weakness of lasers means bad tracking. For this you have to keep your signature small -no shield extenders- and keep away from the optimal damage range of lasers, which is somewhere around four kilometers.
You might try to get them from longer range. But while we Minmatar have really problem to deal serious damage with our projectile weapons on twenty kilometers, the Amarr have no problem doing that. They never had. And to try to fight it out on that range is certain death for a Minmatar ship, especially if tanked shield.
If you try to do, you need a long point on your vessel, which will have problems to run through. Okay, it's all possible. Minmatar spirit will always prevail. ButGǪ I'm just saying. The idea lacks a bit of finesse.
If you try to do the same with the Slasher what you were able to do with the Rifter, you fail on the working tank. You can't get a good armor tank on the Slasher. You can certainly try but it will be much worse than on a Rifter.
If I want a vessel that is punching out maximal damage on range, I would always chose the Breacher before a Rifter now. So the role the Republic Fleet has assigned to my vessel isn't helping much. The tracking bonus was essential to infighting. You can't replace it.
And I wonder what happened to my militia. Electus Matari disbanded, the systems are all in Amarrian hands. Yeah, I understand the change to the Rifter, but it's now not the same vessel anymore. It only bears the famous name. That's all. And I wondered, if there are traitors in the ranks of the Republic Fleet. Who what to give us Matari the last stab into the back for the big Reclaiming of our space.
There are dark times ahead. I just hope some tribe will rise and start an assault. Like they did a few years ago. Slave trading has risen in Matar space. Back in my times slaves were not available on the local markets. This changed. I was away for two years and everything is new.
I feel alienated. Where is Electus Matari? Where is Ushra Khan? Only thing I see it patrolling Amarrians in our hisec, killing off Minmatar haulers. All I see are pirates that started an extortion racket about Custom Office in whole Minmatar space. An investment that could be easily nullified. But nobody does.
I visited the Minmatar Militia board, where the kills used to be tracked in the war. It was not available anymore on neocom. I visited the Amarrian Militia board and it was almost unused. With just a couple of destroyed Minmatar fighters a week, where have been hundreds before.
What happened to my people? It's not an accusation. I am just worried. I'm just asking. What the **** happened here? FREEDOM, PUNK & AUTOCANNONS |

Oh great! An opportunity for me to witter about Minmatar frigates and drugs, my favourite things...
The Rifter is one of the most sublime and versatile pieces of machinery ever devised and I'm looking forward to putting this new configuration through its paces!
I'm pondering which booster combination to take with it - previously I'd take a shot of Drop to get the most out of the inherent tracking, with a shot of Exile to compliment my SAAR. Drop would still compliment the autocannons and help the artillery spin a little quicker on my long-range config, but maybe a dash of Sooth to maximize on the inherent falloff would be better. I'm sure I'll have a wonderful time finding out
Slasher is a ship that I'm really well suited to, yet I don't fly it as much as the Rifter. That's aesthetics for you! I prefer the light-armour config with a range-disrupting TD at scram-range. It's a bit too fragile for my liking to take it in close and personal. Again, Drop and Exile is the cocktail of choice.
Breacher - ah, I love this ship. I even have a vest-top with "Breacher Babe" across the chest (it's a great ice-breaker). Rokkits, MASB and lots of speed. Blue Pill to squeeze the MASB, Crash to give your rokkits more, um, crash!
The Republic don't do many things right, but I can't fault them for designing these ships that make up my stable.
And finally, I couldn't make a post without mentioning...
Katanga Caravan manufactures, sells and delivers all of the booster products mentioned in Synth and Standard variants, ideal for all capsuleers fighting in the CEWPA warzones and trade-hub duelists. Contact me for details.

Decent rifter pilots have known to fight in deep falloff for a long, long time, vs most other frigs. You close orbit vs Amarrian stuffs, and of course, cruisers and up.
Now we're better at no 1, no worse at no 2 (you wont be going THAT fast, and autos still track great) and you have both speed and a web to help vs anything which may, for whatever reason, try tracking games on you.
It is a win/win. "There is no strength in numbers; have no such misconception."

To fly Minmatar ships on drugs must be an awesome experience and now that I'm not pregnant anymore, which was one of the reasons why I dropped service for starters, I'm interested to catch up with all the fun that I missed. Yeah, capsuleers can get pregnant. But in my experience they usually get podded before they can give live to their child.
And after the second unwilling abortion through Amarrian hands I resigned for a vacation, to give birth to my child. Which was a lot less painful than getting shredded by lasers, though. FREEDOM, PUNK & AUTOCANNONS |

Some fade away, yes. Where they fade is different. Some may find peace in using Drop, which has some tradition in Amarr space and leads to come to battle in an industrial vessel.

I don't often fly Minmatar ships, but when I do, I enjoy artillery platforms. A holdover of being taught to engage at range, I suppose. I support these changes; we've all seen the power of the Alpha Thrasher doctrine, perhaps the Republic engineers seek to emulate this. Just like Thrashers are more effective in packs, Rifters may show to be useful in that way too. |
