It's pretty well-established that most stars in the observable portion of our universe exist in binary systems. It strikes me as odd that all the systems we visit in eve are single star planetary systems. Just wondering if there has ever been any talk of making some systems into binary systems.
While we're on topic, why not some interesting stellar phenomena, like novas (and supernovas! OMFGBBQ!), planetary nebulae, and so on?

The backstory actually states that stargates can only be built in binary systems.
Yet every system we see is single star.
I'd assume one of the following:
1) The devs meant to write "single-star systems" and the problem is solved. 2) The devs wrote the article and then forgot when they were actually coding the game.

I always reinterpreted that a stargate needed to have two bodies of mass which would explain why stargates are placed near planets. But I also see a lot of stargates out in the endless void of space by themselves so that shot that theory down.

According to the technical articles, all systems that have stargates are binary: http://www.eve-online.com/background/jump/jump_03.asp
I think that the stars are sufficiently far apart (otherwise they'd collapse into one another or destroy one another from tidal forces) that the other star can't be picked out from the background in the false-colour rendition used by your ship's systems.

The vast majority of binary stars are relatively close... at least within 100 AU of each other!
They won't collapse into each other unless they literally are on top of each other.
Its clearly just a backstory or implementation mistake.

Sounds sort of likely. Or perhaps they just thought the systems looked better with one star (I don't believe for one second that it would be difficult to code this, compared to the system we have now). ------------------------------------------- "Never underestimate the power of language."

Edited by: Chemukh on 26/04/2006 01:29:20 One explanation is that there is less evidence of planets existing in binary systems, and those systems that do have planets that would have planets would be large (binary stars orbiting at 20-100 AU, planets orbiting around those).
Oh, and after further reading, it's not exactly conclusive that the majority of systems are binary. But still, wouldn't we see at least some binaries, especially considering the backstory

Actually, if you look at the system "carrou" on the map, the system "incognition" is right next to it, closer than some of the in-system warps in carrou. i would call that binary, but given the distances and positions of the celestial objects you should be able to warp from carrou to incognition and back. buy you cant. most likley a coding thing, since it would we hard to set how that warp would work. ------------------- uhh.. what does this button do? |

Question, isn't Iyen-Outra(or something) supposed to be a Binary system? according to one of the chronicle stories, it's Binary.

Maybe the systems are called binary because they are really ones and zeroes on a computer in England.

I completely agree - I actually read the articles BEFORE I went to play the game, and I was a bit disappointed to find no binary systems whatsoever (I saw my share in the times I played Freelancer and such, and it's a very nice feature for a game, imho) which contradicts itself. Ah well, I can live with it because EvE is a great game, but I do miss them... Nor do I think it is hard to implement but hey, who am I to say?
I agree with the stellar phenomena thing too; although the infamous Black Hole is in place, Nova's, neutron stars and pulsars would be very cool.

I look at it this way: the map you see when pressing F10 is not the actual galaxy map - it's the map of settled systems. The rest of the galaxy is out there, binary systems and all, but only the habitable single star systems (approx 5000) show up as they are the only ones with stargates (ie. worthwhile). It's like filtering out the unneccessary objects. __________________________________________

There's loads of dynamic stuff going on in space you don't see in Eve, but there's lots of time for it yet

I look at it this way too, which is why I say that there are no binary systems that we visit in eve. The "no stargates in binary systems" rule would fully explain this, and a change to the backstory would fix the inconsistancy, but I think it would be pretty darn cool to have some binary systems around.

Should be fairly easy to code some of the uninhabitable parts of the galaxy into binary star systems.
Also, are the planets/moons orbiting yet? This may be too much to hope for, from a lag and gravity modelling perspective, but would be an interesting project to explore.

Another intersting thing I've noticed is the mix up of star classifications.
For example: I clicked on "show info" of a blue star, and saw that the description said it was classified as an "M" class star, which is the exact oppositeof a blue star... Also, the listing of the classification is different in the "Attributes" tab and the "Description" tab.
In my opinion, this is just the devs being lazy. /me shakes fist. Although I don't really care, since there are much more important issues to fix first, like game-breaking bugs.

/emote awaits patchnotes... 2nd star added to all systems to bring game more in line with the storyline. Followed by the whining by half a dozen players on the forums whose safespots with ships in it happened to be in the new star.
