So the yesterday I equiped an Autotargeter (AT) on my ship to see if I could use it to shoot down missles.
I've found that the 10k range of the Autotargeter is just way to short. For a module that takes a high slot this item is a waste.
Look at it this way, missles now travel at and upwards of 1000m/s. This means that on average you have 10 seconds from the missle entering the AT range to locking on it. Now, subtract 5-6 seconds for the lock time and the missle is 5km away.
That might not sound bad, but in that time you've only gotten a lock on the missle. You still need to go click on the missle icon and activate a gun.
With 1 missle in the air, this is difficult. In combat with 1 NPC ship I found I barly had time to fire 1 shot from my guns before the missle hit.
So... just what is the point of these? _________________________________________________

I'd thought about this as well with the speed of missiles now. On a battleship it's pretty much pointless, given a long lock time and the tracking of L guns. I think a M Ion blaster on a cruisers might still be able to catch one of these tho, but it would still be touch and go.
Are defenders working properly again? They were really the ultimate weapon vs. missiles back in the months after release.

Cool, congrats.
Oh, stupid idea by the way.

I thought you could target them manually with a free gun, from whatever distance. Maybe I was wrong

AFAIK... Without locked targets yes (err, not locking the enemy in combat?) With locked targets no

No, you can't target missles by hand. I've tried.
And I was having troubles shooting down missles with a Dual 150 Proto Gauss gun (1.75s ROF) and lots of modules to increase tracking. My ship was setup just to test the Autotargeter out. From what I've found, I'd have much better results from 2 medium smart bombs than a Dual 150 Proto and an Autotargeter. _________________________________________________

I haven't tried since the patch, however, pre-patch yes you could target missles manually. Activate a free gun without having a target selected, and when the targeting crosshair comes up, click on the missle. It locks on, and fires.

Use a passive targetter instead.
Your 425mm Prototype I Gauss Gun perfectly strikes some nublar, wrecking for 1155.0 damage. |

Yeah, defenders work again, and they're REALLY fast... have yet to see one miss ;) Kind of fun to watch. |

Haven't tried this, I'll test it today.
Getting back to the AutoTargeters..
Does anybody actually use them? _________________________________________________

Given their range (or lack of it), speed (same...), and highslotness... i'd think they're really most useful for something like battleships targetting drones and/or wiseass frigates.
Previously, in testing with corpmates, i had been using one in a cruiser to nab missiles (as had some others). You're missing a crucial step: between autotarget missile and shoot missile, web missile.
Yes, it worked - barely. Not when more than one was anywhere near you... although if you were REALLY slick, you could take the next one out with the detonation of the webbed one when it got near. More luck than art.
No, i doubt it will at all now, which is why i'm saying this out loud
You are in a maze of twisty little asteroids, all alike. |

You are missing the real value of the AutoTargeting Modules... they add 2 extra targets that can be locked ! Sometimes it is nice to be able to lock to more targets than you have the skills to handle...
