Okay, I have played through my trial and my first month. I just signed up for my first 3 months paid and I have been training to make myself somewhat useful in a Frigate. I want to spread my wings and fly into the wonderful world of Eve PVP but I have no idea where to start. Do I simply go looking for trouble in lowsec, do I sign up for FW?
My playtime tends to be staggered here and there. I am not really concerned with coming out on the winning end of anything here, I simply want to get my feet wet and not do something clearly against the rules of the game which I will admit I am a little hazy with as I have not ventured outside of highsec to this juncture. Thanks in advance for any and all help y'all can provide. |

Welcome!
As a new player, head for Faction Warfare. You can get stuck in from day one earning good income in the plexes, take fights as they come, and tag along with any fleets as they happen.
FW low sec is awash with other Frigates eager to 'make your acquaintance'.
Here is a guide to the mechanics: http://www.gamerchick.net/2013/01/the-beginners-guide-to-faction-war.html
Here is the basics of fitting Frigates for PVP: http://www.evealtruist.com/p/know-your-enemy.html
And here is an excellent resource for finding a corp which matches your idea of how to enjoy EvE: http://www.factionwarfare.com/recruiting-corps/minmatar-corporations/ "Jita 4 4 Spaceport. You will not find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious!" |

+1 on the faction warfare route. Im a complete noob myself and a day after joining a FW corp I was out flying in a fleet shooting things, learning stuff and earning LP and ISK. I highly recomend it. |

I approve of your first name.
It's obvious you have both class and taste.
Also approve of the advice given regarding FW. It's a great intro to PVP. There are also a ton of non-faction war corps/alliances that are great for newbies such as RvB, Brave Newbies, Eve Uni even.

Everything above. And read my thread (below) . I started in lowsec at about the same age as you so it will give you an idea of what to expect. There is even a chart! You will die a lot so unless you are well funded, join FW. Zappity's Adventures for a taste of lowsec. |

I'm not going to argue with the FW advice. I roam there with small fleets to pray of FW vets and noobs alike :D.
But its not the only way to get into PvP. First of all i would recommend not waiting. I waited and it didn't help at all. Sure you have better skills. But RL piloting skill are probably just as important if not far more important. You only get that by doing.
One way without ending up as free fodder in large parts of highsec is to join one of the public fleets around that are new pilot friendly. RvB Ganked has large fleets every saturday. Spectre Fleet has public fleets fairly often every day. Both are very new pilot freindly and mostly let you use cheap ships. You will lose them. Hell in our sunday fleets we expect to die. Both have public channels and everyone is more than willing to help new pilots with fitting and any other advice.

I'm seriously upset that you did advertize both Ganked and Spectre but left out the Redemption Road roams (being hosted on different days. Wednesdays we have public cruiser fleets. Saturdays our lovely Bam Stroker takes the Aussies out for a sping and of course on Sundays we play together with everybody in Sunday Sinners).
Just because the above had spotlights and thus is bigger doesnt mean there arent others you can join.

All of the information here is good. I chose the Faction Warfare path and have never regretted it. I return to FW from time to time.
Keep in mind that no matter which path you choose, it will be a good time to concentrate on your core skills. Don't be too quick to field the bigger ships. Just because you can sit in it doesn't mean that you are capable of fielding it effectively. Expect to lose a lot of ships while you are learning (even more reason to fly frigates and destroyers). Someone told me a long time ago, "Consider your ship lost when you undock it, and if you are able to return to the station after an engagement or roam, consider yourself lucky." I have lived by that in eve, and it has served me well. Never fly what you can't afford to lose.
Listen to your Fleet Commander. Only do what they tell you do when they tell you to do it. Save your idle chatter and 10k questions for when the fleet stands down. Only report on comms things that are relevant to the fleet and it's survival i.e. "3 thrashers and a griffin on short scan." Keep your mouth closed and your ears open. Grow a thick skin and expect to be criticized. It's not personal. It's how you find out that you have screwed up. Learn from it. Have fun.

Personally, I have always thought of FW more as more of an option for an alt of an established player rather then as something for a newbee to jump right into. Unless I am mistaken - and I might be since things do change in EVE, when you participate in FW you can take standings hits from your opposing races. Which in turn may restrict your ability to travel and relocate in EVE. IMO a new player requires flexibility to live wherever since you really dont know where you want to go and what you want to do early in your career. So all in all, you might be better trying things such as RVB or some of the public fleets being mentioned. Also keep in mind there are different styles of "pvp" in eve. For instance, many folk dont consider pvp to be pvp unless its solo or small group others say pvp doesnt have meaning unless its large fleets going at it in Null. It takes time to find your niche and you should keep in mind that what you see in FW, RVB, etc. . . . is only a small slice of the eve PVP pie. I don't play, I just fourm warrior. |

FW is not solo friendly. I highly recommend joining a FW corp/alliance.
Why is FW not solo friendly? Because of the ubiquitous use of boosters throughout the FW region. Warfare links boost the performance of ships to borderline absurd levels, and competing against players who have links, when you do not, will leave you extremely frustrated, especially as a new player.
Unless you get into a FW corp, I recommend RvB or BNI.

Join a pvp corp. Research it first to make sure it is a good pvp corp. Faction warfare is a decent income and decent place to find pvp solo to medium gang. In high sec you have RvB doesn't matter which side you join it is fun low cost pvp with no podding and easy to access. Null sec is the 3rd option. NPC null usually gives small to medium gang roams /sov harrassment. Sov null tends more to large scale fleets centred around defending and attacking structures. Which one suits you depends more on your prefered playstyles than anything and a good corp in any of these areas will help train you into a decent pvp pilot. Money at its root is a form of rationing. When the richest 85 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion (50% of humanity) it is clear where the source of poverty is. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/20/trickle-down-economics-broken-promise-richest-85 |

I wouldn't worry overly much aabout links in FW regions. Are they common? Yes. Are they prevalent? Not sure. Are they ubiquitous? No. I have never paid much attention to links tbh. I have probably died more often than I should have but there are plenty of good fights to be had.
Having said that, if you see an obvious link character in system (get in the habit of checking killboards) then just move on. Choose targets wisely. Zappity's Adventures for a taste of lowsec. |

The only real rules you have to worry about is that you cant bait/gank new players in rookie systems. As long as you dont do this you can do more or less whatever you want, where you want.

OGB alts are not as bad as they were. With the recent changes they seem to prefer to hug stations now.
For new solo Plexer/PvPers, the best strategy is to find a stationless pipe system to plex in. You can keep an eye on all the traffic passing through and watch out for 'Solo' FW toons who arrive at the same time as a neutral.
They invariably fly Condors or Slicers.
If you suspect an OGB'er just safe up, ignore the inevitable smack and call outs, (Seriously: dont say a word in local,) and deny them their sad killboard padding which no one but them cares about anyway.
Just wait for the true soloists who you can have a constructive fight with, and an even more constructive discussion about it afterwards.
Don't be afraid to convo combatants and ask for advice.

Totally true. 'Twas Tuskers that taught me my first valuable lessons about how not to get killed in null, by killing me in null, then having the patience to answer my noob questions and give solid advice on how to avoid same mistakes in future.

I would definitely advocate checking out Spectre Fleet. We have a lot of really low skill point ship doctrines that are really easy to train into (if you can't already fly them), offer multiple daily fleet roams of all different kinds across all the main time zones, and are very open to new people and players.
- We also have a weekly FC club that encourages pilots to try their hand at being a fleet commander if that kind of thing interests you. |
