I remember when I played UO when it FIRST came out.
LOL what a trip that was. I took up being able to hide so I could strategically hide from those annoying PK'ers that bothered me when I was mining.
But I always respected the highway men that would say your coin or your life. Hey if you had me dead to rights I would pay. If it was cheaper for me to pay you than try and run I would. Most times I paid. I got good enough eventually where I could defend myself...
But What I detested is the preying upon of an obviously new person to the game. Give em some slack wait till they know whats going to happen ;) .
So my wife being the nice person she is got suckered in Oursalaert while mining. She likes to do that mine, make things trade sell etc etc. Me well Im more of a blow them up and ask questions later. I am however now a pirate hunter :P.
Anyway
She was asked to do a favor to someone there and hold some ore mined from his STANDARD can. Which she agreed thinking nothing of it wanting to help someone out. Her in her 6 day old character that anyone can plainly see in her little frigate. Of course you know what happened then right ?
Warp scrambled and ransomed. I must say I found it ironically funny and she was not happy at all. What did she do ? She had 300K and told the guy to blow her up. Fully insured and medical coverage.... she promptly warped out after being destroyed. Probably was allowed too because I had warped in with my Thorax cruiser and had them both in my sights... being in a gang and all :P . Silly me did not have a warp scambler equipped since well I didn't expect to have to deal with PC pirates. In the end it was a minor annoyance as she was fully insured. Shopped around and got a replacement frigate for much less than that insured paid out.She got over it and I guess well now she knows not to do that anymore.
But perhaps ole pirates of Eve that you oughta realize there is even honor in being a thief and a vagabond ? Leave the newbies alone and let them learn when they aren't so newbie'ish anymore.
Where has honor amongst theives and pirates gone ? Has it been lost here ? Only you can answer that question.
Now time to do research on exactly how I can be the best pirate hunter I can be.
Cheers !!!
P.S I'm not whining. It was a learning lesson. A fun fact about eve. But there is more to being a pirate than being a stupid bananna head about it all. At least make it a challenge and accept everything there is about being a pirate. Avoiding the consequences of High sec space in which you are purposefully preying on NEWBIES is.... decidely... not very honorable or nice :P.

I had a tool logout on my last night in a prophecy. He was just a couple months old and his ransom would have been FAR FAR less then what the cost of a new ship and kit will be. But he logged, terrible mistake. I told him that in local when he logged back in his pod. I told him ransom would have been 5 mil max. I know this isn't what I usually charge for BC ransom(usually 10 to 15 mil), but like I said I do make dispensations for new chars.

aye...
she considered paying the ransom. As I stood behind her with my jaw dropped to the floor LOL. I couldn't believe it. I thought darn that sucks. As I said she was not happy about it. But considered her options and decided it was worth being blown up. This was when I wish I had instant jumping capability ;).
She was 6 days old and I'm 16 days old.
She has a cruiser now and a few more battle skills under her belt. But I told her that this was a risk. I just thought exploiting game mechanics to get around high sec space was cheesy. Wasn't like it was a suicide attack on a hauler. It was a little frigate that was obviously newbish. I now escort her on lower security space mining missions.
Honor amongst pirates !!!

think of it as a learning expirience. as such, it is good that it had happen sooner than later.

Better a cheap frigate now than a fully fitted expensive battleship later.

As been said it's a lessoned learned however unfortunate. Let your wife know however that there are friendly people in EVE. As for gettin pirates to lighten up on the n00bs well that kinda goes against everything most piracy in EVE nowadays composes off. New players, miners, industrialists are the target of choice for pirates. Kinda like in the days of the Roman collisum where they throw slaves up against 5 hungry tigers or somethin equally rigged.
I make cool banners for ISK. |

One lost frigate is a much better lesson than learning everything in theory. As far as pirate honor goes, its only concerned with letting go after the ransom is paid. "Preying on the weak" is an illusion caused by the fact that mostly new people get caught due to their inexperience.
Though what happend to your wife wasn't exactly piracy, but a can trick (not cool imo). Guys who did it are probably no good. You could always start a corp, war dec them and pop some eggs.

Honestly the best pirate hunters are pirates themselves IMO. Anti-pirate is a different story though. -------------------------------- Joria Klex > it's sad really cuz i know for a fact i would utterly destroy u all in RL combat |

Noob pirating filters out the weak. Personally, I'd rather have fewer good players than 5 million total idiots/whiners, like WoW.

it can be done... this is all fiction.
Read the dragonlance book wayward knight. It can be done ;).
Yes it was a learning experience. But my wife believed she was genuinely trying to help another person. Of course now she knows fully about cans and secure containers. Doubt she will be so trusting again.

Dragonlance was an excellent series. However.. Quote: Doubt she will be so trusting again.
Understanding and learning that one basic principle in EVE is far more important than trying to find people in this galaxy who see honor and loyalty as currency. A new age will happen in EVE when trust and dignity will overpower the no-man's land that is 0.0 and low-sec and people like NOCTS are going to usher it in. But that time is not yet here, and thus you need to remain adaptable and place survivability above all else.
Have patience, but don't play the innocent pilgrim while waiting.
Cheers. --------------

eve online.
i'm a pirate. i blow people up for ISK and fun. I would never cheat a 1v1, backstab a deal or blow someone up who'd paid the ransom. Does that make me an honourable pirate?
I am entirely trustworthy within certain constraints.

in all seriousness though, unless they're old or potentially doing something worth money, don't go get people in highsec - wait until they come to lowsec, cuz then you can yell at them for being idiotic and coming to you.

High sec piracy can make one fat and wealthy if done right. And you also need luck tho.
example. System: Nonni 0.5 Destroyed items: Modulated strip miner II Modulated strip miner II Modulated strip miner II

Be nice and friendly to pirates but don't underestimate them or think they wouldn't try to kill you when they want to and can. ******************** Those without a tribe can only keep their word.

Because the internet is not anymore the same as it was at the begining. At the start the internet was only open for specialized people => people that know their PC, know to get in, had a PC at all was somewhat that not everyone had (mostly a matter of cash, too) => people have to had something within their heads to be able to be in the internet. And that means the were people with individuals with a very good education at with that some morals and ethics (no, I don't mean the **** that the church is babbling about).
Remember the spirit within Diablo I... and now look on Diablo II: 'plz give me stuff' 'plzplzplzplz' some pages later '*******' ).
Today, nearly everyone has the option to go into the internet, that means now you can meet nearly everyone that is out there... and that isn't something good, because 90% are just selfish idiots.
At the beginning only people that having the cash+knowledge to get a PC are within the net => so mostly adults NOW every kid gets a PC from their parents => kid like to play computer games => now most player are kids and kids are ANNOYING.
Imagine a 15 year old boy, with pickles, no muscles and so on the frustrated underdog that is beaten from everyone in RL gets a BS... everyone that is weaker get to feel his wreath => mostly the noobs with their little frigates. (That would I call grieving...) ____________________________________________________________
