I see Skype is now offering Skypecasts, where you can conference in up to 100 people. Previously, the service allowed you to do 10 person conference calls.
Has anyone used Skype in conjunction with Eve? "Free" is always a good price...I'm just wondering if it bogs down your PC too much for playing Eve. ____________________________________________________________________

When I had a super-restrictive firewall on the network I had to play from, I used skype instead of TS, and it lagged to kingdom come. Then I figured a way of getting vent working over it, and that's so much better. Skype is terrible for gaming voicecomms. ---:::---

Would be interested in that, too.
I always felt that Skype greatly compromised bot cpu and connection performance.

Maybe I'm reading this thread wrong because I haven't gotten enough sleep, but someone said they got Ventrilo to work with TS servers. How does that work? ___________________________ |

I tried it before I got Ventrilo and Skype caused EVE to be very unstable, still not sure why. I'd use Vent any day.

adding myself to this list, i want to know this too.
im thinking of renting a server for my lil gang in a few months time when i come back. I could ofcourse read each organisations info pages, but it'll be great for some hands-on experiance.
So, which program runs the smoothest (least amount of lag)?

I've never reeeally used Ventrilo beyond the "ooh, what's this?" stage. I've seen many posts that basically say that, while TS has a nicer interface and such, Ventrilo offers a better sound quality. Take that as you will. |

Some people think Vent sounds better. It also has issues with many sound cards, and is more expensive to host.
The answer? TS3. Soon(TM).

our corp uses skype, and we don't find any lag. TS has a bit more static imo, depending where you are. just do not ever try use msn messnger... then you just want lag.

The biggest issue I can think of, as mentioned, is that Skype hogs resources like no tommorrow. I've tried using it, and I've had my lower-end computers actually become unable to run the visual elements of skype simply because it was taking up so much processing. The screen would freeze for the entire duration of the skype calls. Even on my better machines, Skype is pretty bad, taking up 75-80% of the system's resources when it's running. Teamspeak's much more system-friendly, but I can't comment on ventrillo, never used it. GoogleTalk is very nice, but 2-way only.

I haven't used Skype while playing games, but I have used it for hours on end while using the computer and I noticed no side-effects. I also have it running in the background constantly, and can't see it causing a problem if I called someone on it. ---------- Sorry but that link contains nawty language. -wystler "Discussing moderation is not allowed" - Ivan K "Ranting is prohibited" - Teblin

Only up to 100 people disqualifies Skype already, as mentioned before it is using way too much ressources anyway.
Ventrilo is less common then Teamspeak, but the quality is a lot better with an equal load. You can tune up Teamspeak to about the same, but then you won't have any bandwidth to play with left.

Skype uses strong encryption methods at the expense of cpu. It also sends a constant amount of data regardless if you are talking or not, adding to the security, but sacrificing bandwidth. That renders Skype less favourable for playing games.
Security however is compromised by the fact that Skype Technologies owns the encryption key server...
Don't know about Skypecast though.

I am a bit baffled by people claiming Skype to eat resources; most it does, as correctly noted above, is use encryption, which eats up some of your CPU; and yes it uses constant amount of bandwidth, but not a very big chunk of it. Ventrilo consumes more bandwidth than Skype, and that is actually the reason it sounds so much better. If you are on a dialup or slowish ADSL, Ventrilo will make your game lag quite noticeably, every time you speak you will get a lag spike. Also, Teamspeak's channel commander functionality is not present in Ventrilo - you can set up multiple ptt keys to speak to different people, but it's a hassle.
Oh, and Vent has one of the most brain-dead server-admin interfaces I ever seen, in particular the user editor. It can't even sort the users alphabetically.

ventrilo does not sound better than TS, the default ventrilo codec sounds better than the default TS codec...
if your ts server is configured by some1 who has a clue, ts will sound just as good as vent
as for skype, 100 ppl is not enough, and can you have seperate channels?

I run a TS server for several EVE corps and a couple WoW guilds and sound quality is excellent as long as you are using the Speex codec rather than the default codec (forget the name ATM).
I always setup my channels with Speex 12.4 which gives outstanding audio quality while using up very little bandwidth, even for dial-up users.
I have also used Ventrillo, and it is a great product, but for the money, I feel that TS is a the better deal. :)

I / We use Skype often for small interviews/ or small gangs
I find Skype alot better the Teamspeak.
Good quality fast and easy interface simple to dial up
but limited for max 10users
Teamspeak sounds like shouting in a beancan = use Skype for work, private ..and fast eve-convs

Skype is awesome for chatting to friends, but not for in-game comms. It eats up pretty much every system resource. I can only imagine Skype and a blob fight :P

teamspeak = only choice for fleet battles
small gangs (up to 10 people) = skype best used for 2-5 people
it gets pretty ******* annoying if you cant understand other peeps in your own mother tongue using ts.
teamspeak 3 sounds promising tho

100% correct.
Me and a Skype mate done a mission together and the end result was my HAC deep into structure cos of a 5 second lag delay on almost everything.
God knows what a real fight would have been like.

I prefer Ventrilo because you can use Direct Input for your PTT key. (means you can use a joystick button)
When I rented a Ventrilo server, I made sure the codec was Speex, because all the Xiph.org codecs are great.
Vorbis > MPEG Layer 3, Speex > GSM, etc --

To me it seems that ventrilo have a longer delay in sending of sound due to a bit higher quality then ts. Tho quality is lesser on ts it seems to deliever the sound data faster. Skype is a no-no for me. Couldnt play at all while using it.

Edited by: Cinnander on 04/05/2006 14:23:15 Its' been a while since I used either, but TS is a no-no if you're on the network at Uni, for instance, or a large company net with some whacky setup to stop people playing games and the like, and it can't traverse any network with a proxy or some such due to using UDP. It also can't be tunneled cos of UDP. Ventrilo can be tunneled I recall as it uses TCP. Skype works without modification from behind this net, I think because it understands how to use the system proxy settings, and uses TCP.
So for a "Im stuck behind a BOFH-operated network" POV, Skype or Vent are the options >.< |

Skype: 2-3 people
vent: 3-40
ts2: annything above 40
thats what iv'e learnt using all those programs over the years, i supose vent woud work just as well for more people, but i have never had a chance to try it
i prefere vent over ts for the better quality and overall functionality, but thats just personal preference
