The Retriever is a fine ship for mining but it lacks one thing a way to mount a Roid scanner, since most Retrievers use a shield extender in the mid slot. I would like to suggest that an additional mid slot be added or traded for a low slot so that a roid scanner can be carried without losing the shield.
Also I wonder why indies have a longer lock range than mining barges and exhumers...

Ok the Indy with guns, makes sense. Sort of an armed tramp freighter....
And yes I do replace the extender with a scanner. But why? The Venture has room for a scanner and shields, the Mack the same so why doesn't the Retriever. It seem like a step backward, since the scanner is a major tool for anyone using strip miners.
I really don't expect a change to happen but, one can always hope... |

It seem like a step backward You know a Mack is literally just a higher-tech version of the retriever right? It is created using a retriever blueprint. So the retriever having one mid and the Mackinaw having more makes perfect sense. The Mack is a more advanced mining ship and has room for extra tools like the scanner. This is a step forwards, not a step backwards.
Yep, the Retriever has only one (1) mid slot the Mack bumps it up to four (4). The Retriever has four (4) lows and the Mack only three (3). I'm thinking that a Retriever with two (2) mid slots and three (3) lows would make a better step up from a Venture without making the Mack any less valuable (it is the Best solo Exhumer for ore). Of course this may make the Retriever more valuable so the price may change making it take longer for a new player to get into one. |
just armor tank the ret it works
That would work, but the down side of armor tanking is you start to cut into the Mining Laser Upgrades low slots.
One thing to keep in mind is the Retriever doesn't have that great of a PG. The cheapest way to upgrade the low PG is to use one of the low slots for an Aux Power control. The more expensive way is to use Rigs... Of course an armor tank doesn't use much power. |

My suggestion of giving the Retriever a second mid slot (for a scanner) would enhance its autonomy purpose without changing it mining capacity. This would allow more efficient mining by being able to know when to short cycle the strip miners. If one cycle (3 min.) of a strip miner yields 5,000 units of ore and the roid you are mining only contains 1,250 units you can stop your strip miner at -+ cycle (45 sec) complete and start on a new roid, thus saving time. But without the scanner you donGÇÖt know how much of the riod is remaining. And yes this would give you a shield tank (just as the rebalance intended) and a scanner.
From the dev log:
GÇóThe Covetor and Hulk cater to group mining operations due to their large mining capability, low EHP and storage, forcing them to rely on others to haul and resupply them with mining crystals. GÇóThe Retriever and Mackinaw are specifically designed for autonomy purposes, as their large ore bays allow their pilot to stay inside an asteroid belt for longer without having to dock. GÇóThe Procurer and Skiff are made for protection against suicide gank, or NPCs, by giving a large enough buffer to react to incoming attacks, while paying for that with a lower mining yield.
All the barges are getting their tanks adjusted to favor shields rather than structure hit points.

WTB: Retriever with four low slots.
OOPS my bad it should be three (3) slots
The Retriever is the best solo T1 miner, I just feel that it should be just a tad more efficient without making it compete with the Mack. The ability to have the shield tank and to add a scanner, does make it more efficient even if you lose a low slot. The main limiting factor on the Retriever is it's PG and CPU, once you get these skill high you might as well move on the Mack. So I don't see a change like this as being a game changer. Anyway those are my thoughts, take them, leave them, or throw up on them. |
