I have Destroyer level I and Frigate level III (currently training to IV.)
I know the prerequisites of Cruisers on up have Frigate IV and above, but what good is it to train Destroyer any further? I'm actually not planning to increase my Destroyer skill any further because I suspect it's not needed for anything else. Is this assumption correct?

Destroyers are used for squashing frigates. If you don't forsee yourself needing to do that, don't bother.

I second that opinion. Though, the Destroyer is a good ship to do missions and ratting in, while you are saving up for a cruiser.
Just remember, if you fit railguns on your Destroyer, make sure you also fit a webber so you can hit the frigs who orbit you at 1000m.
The webber is god for any close-quarters combat.

Train up your Destroyer skill if you enjoy flying them. Every additional level of skill increases the native bonii (+ Fall Off Range, +Tracking Speed, etc.) of the destroyer you're flying. At higher skill levels and with the right gunnery skills (Sharpshooter, specific turret type, etc.) you can reach out and touch someone up to 30km away. When firing 8 turrets at once that's noticable.
Realize that the destroyer is a fleet weapon. Due to its relatively slower speed and lighter armor it's not intended as a solo pwnmobile. It really shines when combined with tackling frigates or used as a screen in support of larger vessels. Also, a destroyer will cost maybe 1M ISK maximum on the player market. If you lose one it's not a big deal. It's one of the most cost effective vessels in the game.

Do you fly or intend to fly destroyers or interdictors? If yes train it. If not don't but you might want to reconsider.
There's a lot of destroyer haters in the starter corps that constantly try to convince people not to fly them. Only reason I can see for them to do that is they're alts for newb-ganking pirates that fly frigates.
I haven't looked at other races much yet but for a low skill character like me (2mil 80%+ in learning) the Thrasher with a shield tank is better than the Scythe or Stabber and even some Rupture setups. I have no doubt the cruisers become better later on but as far as I'm concerned every newb should be encouraged to move from frigate to destroyer ASAP.
Personally, for combat purposes, I'm going to skip cruisers altogether and go straight from my destroyer to a battlecruiser. Once I'm done learning I'll top up my shield skills then buy the BC book. Should be able to do 17k hitpoints the first time I undock

Edited by: Bach Atreides on 04/05/2006 19:58:16 I actually fly my Destroyer almost exclusively and I do like it. When I get my Engineering and Energy Management levels higher is when I'll really see the difference as far as the hardware I'll be able to mount without tapping out.
Yeah, I did notice a lot of people putting the Destroyer down and I'll admit, I did think about skipping it. But then I said, what the hell for? There's more cargo and lot's of weapon slots, so I didn't know why so many people talked down about it. I can see why noob pirates might trash it publicly because of obvious reasons. The replies in this thread really reinforced my confidence in the Destroyer.
I'm sweeping aside opposition now in Level 1 missions and I can put more ore in cargo when I mine. The only problem with Destroyers as far as I'm concerned is their relatively weak armor, but then, there has to be a tradeoff somewhere. Their firepower is great for a new player.

With a cormorant, good skills, destroyer V, spike ammo and a sniping setup you can reach out and slap from 105km'ish optimal

never understood how people underestimate that little "per level" on the ship bonus so often.

Only use I've got for a destroyer - fit 7 tractor beams and use it a loot recovery ship.

If you look at the ship description you will see that each lvl os skill gives you something (rate of fire for example). So if you fly a destroyer and your friend flyes a destroyer but has lvl 5 in des skill, he would be slightly better than you.
Training up destroyer skill is a requirement for the interdictors which seem to be very nice ships. *** TRats - We ransom!!! *** |

Edited by: Chakademus on 05/05/2006 10:49:50 Wellllll destroyers are ok I cant say they are a bad ship, I just think a good frigate is better, but then i like to go so fast nothing touches me.
Personally i lost the few destroyers i ever had near instantly but i admit that was cause of bad setups and bad piloting.
My personal choice as corpless mission junkie would be frigate lvl 1 cruiser lvl 2 battlecruiser lvl 3
Tho i fly minmatar ships which are a bit skill heavy. The only reason you'd find me in a destroyer would be if i caved in and joined a corp and no one else could fly an interdictor but me.
Interdictors look like a beautiful ship for pirating low sec when accopanied by a few larger ships
Destroyers are a little clumsy for me agility and speed over power any day. ___________________________________ Damn alt getting in all my posts.

Destroyers seem to be a waste, IMO. I can take out frigates just as easily with my cruiser.

Yes but a destroyer is a quarter the cost of an average cruiser.

As I indicated before, my low-skill Thrasher out-tanks every Scythe, Stabber and most Ruptures I've seen so far. I died pretty quick the first few times out though prior to my current setup. Like any ship it's only as good as it's fittings and skills.
