Tranquility will be unavailable from 0900 through 2100 GMT on Wednesday, 10 May for the deployment of additional hardware. This hardware upgrade will increase the CPU and RAM utilized by the database servers and will bring the entire database hardware layer to 64-bit.
You can read more about the hardware upgrade in this news item.

I'm curious how exactly you intend to "scale up even further" when you've already maxed out / fully loaded the new hardware?
+ Up to 64GB PC2-3200 DDR II memory per chassis + ...up to 3.00GHz (dual-core)
What is left to upgrade, short of getting more racks? Uberware indeed! _____________________________________________________________________ Thar be Pirates

We can hook the machines up with external backbones and chain the machines together into one machine. So to the OS it looks like one machine. I tested this in-house here at CCP before we shipped the machines to London and it works great. ------ Valar Database admin - Server operations team CCP Games How to write a good bugreport |

Your hardware has to specifically support it. The IBM x460 has this as one if it's main selling points, that it can chain together the "bricks". It certainly sold us

This is how all of "the world's fastest computers" work, like the one that measures el nino, it's a room full of 64bit Macs iirc

Uh, yeah, they were going amd64's for the hardware, whats this xeon crap?
Also, does this mean you've got the d'base running on 64 bit as well?

IIRC, the AMD64's are for the Sol nodes and proxies. That's a different bit to the database that they are now upgrading. They mentioned before having tested both the AMD and Intel chips to see which were fastest for the previous upgrade. In those bits of the server, the AMD64's won. I would imagine that they tested both on the DB bit of the server, and found that the xeon's were faster for this bit, so used those.
I for one couldn't care less about the AMD vs Intel arguments - when it comes down to it, it doesn't matter if one is more elegantly designed, or runs a benchmark, or someone elses DB faster than the other. All that matters is which runs Eve fastest, and the Devs are in a far better position to tell that than we are. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

iirc the intels are a little faster with DB stuff, but as you say, they've not exactly gone and said, hmm, that looks shiny, i'll take two :)
What i *am* more interested in is the DB its self, has it gone 64 bit yet?

Edited by: MysticNZ on 05/05/2006 22:30:01 How come you use AMD in the cluster and Intel on the DB end? Is there quite a performance difference when it comes to DBs?
