I have decided to cancel my subscription, and I wanted to explain why and give some sincere advice.
First of all, excellent job on the game. I like the gameplay very much.
I like the game play, I like the friends I've made.
But, ranging from back story to story lines to ship names to dialogue from npcs in missions to mission dialogues there is undeniably a false christian theme present and it's very clearly deliberate.
While I can handle games with some spiritual references (such as Light and Dark side of the force, or in World of Warcraft the light and the shadow), when I see this sort of thing at this level, I know it's time for me to move on.
I stopped playing another MMO Tera for much the same reason. Tera focused around a city in the midst of a troubled land with monsters. There was a goddess of the city. I thought to myself "Okay, whatever, its just a game" and continued playing.
At about level 20 I got a storyline quest and was to go meet this goddess in the center of the city. When I got there the game went to a cutscene where my character got down on his knees, put his arms in the air and began bowing down and waving his arms worshipping the goddess. I immediately unsubbed and uninstalled.
It was incredibly foolish to put that cutscene in the game. They lost something (even if it was just one subscription, me) by including it, but would have lost nothing by leaving it out and going in a slightly different story direction.
It is foolish to include such deliberate and obvious religious references into a game, especially in an MMO where players pay over time instead of in one installment. While it may only be a small demographic (possibly larger than you may realize) that you are alienating, but it is still a demographic.
To a player that has any sensitivity at all towards this sort of thing, at the most it is extremely offensive; and at the least is, well, strange and uncomfortable.
You lose something by including religious references, but on the other hand, lose nothing by leaving them out.
I would encourage the developers to consider this in future design. |

...as you prove that being overly religious destroys the capacity to think rationally (and I know all about it with a fervent Baptist father and a preacher for a grandfather).
You do not state whether you are an atheist who is offended, or a person of a specific religion, who is being offended.
They are just games, depicting fake religious platitudes to make more believable "in game cultures".

You need to quit gaming in general and go for a walk outside. It's Spring you know.
Also, you should know the theme in EVE is cold, thievery, betrayal, brutal, unforgiving, death death death everywhere. How christian is that? |

Actually, that's a pretty accurate description of the Old Testament EVE just has less actual "blood". "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

Says the guy whose corp is "Lions of Judah."
Religion has been a part of human history as far back as anyone can go. Any designer looking to create a fictional world populated with humans is therefore incredibly likely to include a fictional religion as a part of the imagined culture.
At least EVE doesn't ever force your character to bow to anything in a cut scene. Your fictional character can react to the fictional religions however you want him to.
My question to you is, where do you get off being all offended by the presence of a fictional religion with a couple of superficial resemblances to some varieties of Christianity from your perch in a corporation with a very real reference to RL Judeo-Christianity in it? I'd hate to see what OP does when he is walking down the street and some guy is preaching outside a church...
Some people need to get a thicker skin. Religion is a part of this world, like it or not. Humans in New Eden have come from Earth millenia ago etc, so there is bound to be some references. Not to mention the Amarr are a 'fierce and deeply religous race' so it's to be expected to be mentioned.
Good job OP hasn't heard of CODE. yet...
For reference, I'm not religous, just sick of idiots like OP who believes his view is the only one that matters... Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person." |

Indeed. That was one of the tip-offs for me as well, and I'll state again, he cleverly hides which side of the fence he is on. The post itself could swing either way.
The ambiguity kills any validity in his statements, at least for me. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

Wasn't there a thread like this a while back?
Something about someone being offended because of slavery in the Amarr Empire, and they were playing as an Amarr?
All I heard was: blah blah religion blah blah makes a game bad blah blah.
I'll give this thread a 4/10 as I bothered enough to replay. Surrender is still your slightly less painful option. |

Hmm? I don't know anything about Tera, that is another game. I don't know what you are talking about in regards to EVE, you really didn't say much about this game in the particulars. I mostly run Caldari mission agents, nothing like that in there at all. I've done some research, I haven't found anything deeply concerning about the backstory of this game. You have been with LoJ just a few days, maybe seek council with them? What I know of them they are a good group of guys, they are probably better informed than me on the subject and not quick to make a forum scene. Maranatha. |

I have not been to a professional baseball game in about 30 years. Do they still say a prayer after the National Anthem ? They were of course always Christian prayers, despite the Muslim players and other "non-believers" present. The Boy Scouts, iirc, were always about Christian prayers only "to serve God and my country...and obey the law of the Pack".
So, yes, in America at least, Christians do have an overwhelming monopoly, unfortunately. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |
